If you had any doubts about a sequel......

So can the people that keep saying this movie didn't do well finally admit that you are wrong? Whether you liked the movie or not doesn't matter. This movie was a success... the numbers prove it. I don't see how you can contine to dispute that.

I don't think the numbers will prove it until we actually know how much money it brought in compared to how much it cost and how much they spent on ads and stuff.

I am certain that it didn't make as much as they thought it would

Well break down the numbers and it looks pretty promising. 3.8 million DVDs at an average of say $20 is $76 million dollars. That is just one week, and North America. I would hazard a guess that by the end of Christmas worldwide there will be 6+ million sold. That is an extra $120 million on top of what? $400 million worldwide? Then whatever it costs to get it on pay-per-view, television and you are looking at probably all told about $600-$700 million worldwide. That means after revenue splitting, the movie probably made it's money back. That is a great movie in today's Hollywood. Also consider, in today's Hollywood, that ROC was one of the top 10 grossing movies of the summer even though it was basically only out for 6 weeks of the period (May-Sept) and beat a few movies in the top 10 that were out for months and it was a no-brainer before this DVD shocker. And that is something to also remember, the DVD numbers are a shock. The kind of shock that gets the attention of all parties that could be involved in making a sequel because it means there is probably more of an audience than anyone thought based solely on ticket sales. Family Guy was probably the first evidence that DVD sales can be a good gauge on how truly large an audience may be for a product, and current belief is that DVD sales are usually where money finally is made on a film.

Also, in Hollywood the numbers are not really as important as the perception. I'm sure Hasbro and Paramount are happy, but they can now go to directors, writers, actors and the money men with "landmarks". IE: top 10 summer movie in only 6 weeks!! Nearly 4 million DVD sold in first week!! More than $400 million worldwide ticket sales!!

Those kind of promos go a long way towards getting quality people both in front of, and behind the camera and don't worry about what it cost! @loll@

Of course not, but if you really want a break down start with tickets. Here is how ticket sales work (I worked as a manager at AMC for 6 years):

First 2-4 weeks of release the average is 90/10 on ticket sales. That means 90 cents on every dollar goes to the movie studio and 10 cents to the theatre (why do you think concessions cost so much!). That varies based on how "big" a movie is estimated to be, and how long a movie runs, but smaller movies released off season have better deals for the theatres. Summer movies not so much. So ROC made what? $150 million the first month? So that is approximately $135 million to the studio.

DVD sales have to give percentages to actors, writers, etc. So if the average DVD sale is $20 (most are more in new release, but I underestimated) then we say that studios probably makes 50% of that, so $10. So if they come in at around 6 million DVDs sold by the end of the year, that is $60 million more to the studio.

So the final total of the movie to date is $301 million of which the studio probably got 75% ($225.5 million) plus $60 million in DVD sales and whatever amount they get for TV/Pay Per View rights. So the studio will probably get back $300 million on the movie which cost $175 million plus say $50 million for advertising, etc. So the studio will probably clear at least $25-$50 million on the movie all told.

Just making money is enough in Hollywood today, but as I said before, even if it didn't, the numbers put up are enough for the studio to sell a sequel to all interested parties.

I think it was one of those movies that made money and was just enough to warrant a sequel. The second one has to draw the crowds a little better IMO. This movie was plagued by the fact it was at the end of the summer so (at least for me) people were tired of the summer blockbusters. Sure people saw it but were like meh. Those who liked it and those that didn't get to see it made the DVD sales worth it. I've talked to people who didn't see it at the box office but bought the DVD and thought it was awesome. I thought it was a MUCH better movie then TF:ROTF.

I think being at the beginning of August is a great spot for the franchise. ROC beat a few movies that were released early in the summer season. The month of August tends to be the final hurrah for summer movies, but the path was pretty clear for ROC at that time which probably helped it to make the amount it did.

In the end a better overall movie will probably dictate how much a sequel will make.

I am just thrilled this is another big middle finger to all the drama queens who hate the movie so much...

Agreed. As much as people want to keep saying this movie was a failure, the facts say otherwise. I just think its funny how people can't admit that they were wrong. This movie did not "bomb" like so many predicted.

You know I thought the movie was fine. I really don't see a big deal. To be honest, I would be scared for a sequel unless it had a good storyline. it was set up for a sequel but I don't want to see alot of action with no concrete story. Those are my thoughts.
