I went with disgruntled used car salesman (comic). Have you seen the news today about homegrown militia groups on the rise in the country due to things like economic stress and uncertain times?

It just seems to make more sense to me. He had some major beef with America and his own ideas how things should be done.

The comic version is the most original and interesant history of the Cobra Commander, therefore for explain the origins y motives for the created Cobra, much better option what the movie and cartoon series.

I like not having origins at all. So nobody knows where or why he came from. But I can except the ex military version from the movie. But the fact that he was Dukes buddy makes me wonder where there taking this. Is he gonna turn good like Darthvader in Return of the Jedi.

Never liked the cartoon version and while I love the comics, I could never get behind the that origin either. But I can't say I'm 100% behind the movie version either. I like that he's ex-military and a scientist, I even don't mind that Duke was the escort on the mission where CC got injured (as it gives him someone to personally blame for his disfigurment - "Duke didn't give him enough time and called in the air strike before I did my job" sort of thing) but having to also date his sister. It's almost as bad as CC's brother driving the car that killed SE's parents and sister, so he finds Zartan who goes to kill SE but instead kill SS's uncle so that SS goes off insearch of his uncles killer and joins COBRA when nothing links Zartan to COBRA at that point (atleast not that I've ever seen, Australian biker gang to upcoming but low profile american terrorist group).

So I voted ex-military.

I actually don't mind the cartoon origin either.

I'm always suprised at people who complain that the cartoon movie is too sci-fi. If you're any kind of a fan of the toon you'll notice that early in the series the Joes battled things such as; giant vegitables, synthoids, a "Phantom Brigade", and people with psyonic powers. And that's BEFORE they ever fought Cobra's clone emperor!

I don't mind the Cobra La origin for the cartoon, it shows how powerful or smart he would have to be to come from those origins to what he became. I did though vote for the movie version as it makes the best sense. I would of handled it a little differently though as he would NOT be the Baroness' brother, also I would make it that he wouldn't be disfigured but that he allowed them to believe him dead for his own purposes, make him an evil guy with his own intent from the beginning and the accident only gave him the avenue to move on. Both the animated movie as well as the live action give pointers to that he was a scientist before becoming CC.

That's why the whole Sunbow thing doesn't exist in my mind I have dutifully tried to erase it. The original Sunbow animation from Griffin-Bacal was done to promote the comic 4 times per year in order to get around the (at the time) prohibitions in toy advertising.

I wish the cartoon had not gotten so crazy from day one. I mean I hated the mind control and mechs to carry FLAK cannon up the sides of mountains. I can barely tolerate the Mass device. The Weather Dominator and Pyramid of Darkness are okay, if fatal fluffies and creeper vines could be done away with. Don't get me started about giant tube worms.

I can tell people who liked the Sunbow cartoon liked the movie. For me, both are awful.

Don't forget the Easter Island heads that--wouldn't you know it--are actually attached to giant bodies!

:D

I've been rewatching my cartoons on DVD lately and loving it!

I don't have one, they are all awful.

I have to agree with that.

I third it. I don't really feel like Cobra Commander needs an origin story anyway. There's just something more threatening about the mystery.

The introduction of Cobr-La is where I through my teenage hands in the air for what probably was my first WTF? ever.

I stick to the used-car-salesman origin, as that is (for me) the most believable, in addition to being the one I grew up with. It sells the guy as more 'human', complete with common foibles and eccentricities. And also explains why they guy gets his a$$ handed to him all the time by the Joes. :)

So stick me in the 'old school' pile!

My favorite origin is the Sales guy...but this origin was far more complex than the other ones. In a sense it was more of a tragedy than an out right, "I'm evil" concept. There were many other characters involved with the creation of cobra and the creation of CC himself. Zartan reveals to a captured Fred VII that with out him cobra would never have existed. It come about that it was the Jugglers (NSA) group that have been pulling the strings all along. Again cobras development was a complicated story...so many characters had their hand in the cookie jar. This type of store fit the designs of a long running comic book. To do a story like this would mean you need a TV series. This would take a very savy director and writing team to pull off in a film, and that kind of talent is not going to work on a toy based movie.

The cartoon origin took the overly scifi approach. There's not much to say here but that the aliens have landed, been here a while and that they placed a guy to be a human terrorist leader to take over the world for the aliens. OK thats cool for weekday afternoon TV after school. Those of us who loved the drama of the comics, CC being made to lead a puppet government to terrorize the world and he has a son...we really didn't care for alien CC and would rather pretend it never really happened.

The Movie origin sort of balances between both extremes. A simi-plasable story line of how a young military scientist become scary techno genetic genius later becomes cobra commander by, not respect and ability, but by mind control. This fits the movie mold and while changing everything we all know and love about the series this can be appreciated as a completely new story.
