G.I.Joe Rise Of Cobra Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Here are some other issues that make no sense to me. Believe me, I want to like it. I have been investing myself in the comics and toys of G.I.Joe since 1982.

The beginning of the movie with the convoy leaving from the MARS factory in Kyrgyzstan protecting the nanomite warheads perplexes me. I will also acknowledge that the geopolitical situation in the near future is murky. The novelization says Duke's team is a NATO team but in the film, it appears to be an American team. Why are NATO or U.S. military forces acting in either a central Asian country or a former Soviet republic?

Well, maybe 10-15 years into the "near future" Kyrgyzstan is a NATO partner (or petitioning to be one). Other former Soviet republics have already been accepted into NATO (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania), and others have been trying to join (Georgia and Ukraine being the biggest example). Several other former "Eastern Bloc" states are part of NATO now, as well.

Again, why do the weapons need to be weaponized? What good are they and why do they need to be guarded if they aren't already dangerous or useful? I know real ordinance has certain components missing until they are readied for deployment but I don't understand the need for a light show.

Well, I just kind of thought of it as being similar to escorting fissionable radioactive material. Without the bomb/arming you won't get the big boom, but it still requires exceptionally tight security for transport. But the light show itself? Just an excuse for a FX sequence and killing off the loose end that was Baroness' husband.

Part of the whole MARS/James McCullen plan is to be able to control and order the world by being able to influence wars and sell to both sides. One must presume that the scheme with Storm Shadow and the Baroness was to have plausible deniability for McCullen. He wanted to remain the respectable businessman and face of MARS. Doesn't being caught by G.I.Joe ruin that for him?

Well yes, but his initial plan wasn't to get caught, plus the Joes didn't have much actual evidence against him until late in the movie. He probably figures the world will be so messed up by the nanomite missiles that nobody's really going to care what a failed special ops group that "doesn't exist" says. Heck, the Joes (even if their names weren't known) were being blamed for Paris already.

I liked this Cobra Commander and don't mind the mind control elements of the nanomites. It was kind of fun. I think the film didn't do justice to the Rex Lewis subplot like Max Allan Collins did in the two novels. The film sped through it and gee, loyal soldier and scientist goes mad thirty seconds after seeing nanomites in a lab. The novels had Rex Lewis be betrayed by an accident.

Rex Lewis was supposed to investigate the lab for possible chemical weapons. It really was a U.S. or NATO lab for nanomites and supersoldiers. So Lewis and Hauser's team were doing something bad, which is the first betrayal. Then, the bombing of the bunker went off earlier than expected because of the actions of G.I.Joe. That was betrayal number two. And just perhaps, Lewis didn't become madly in love with nanomites in seconds, but was badly betrayed and burned but Dr. Mindbender used the nanomites to save Rex Lewis, thereby turning him evil.

That would have made much more sense and given a lot more depth to the Cobra Commander character, but probably would have been hard to convey without making the flashbacks even longer/more numerous. I can see why it largely got cut out, even if it would have been a very nice addition. Though Rex -did- make some comment like, "These aren't nukes" to Mindbender when he first arrived. Still, yeah, it looked like Rex went from "Zero to I VILL CONQUER ZE VURLD!" in 10 seconds flat on-screen.

Something to keep in mind:

ROC is not a film to analyze. It has no pretencions of being great cinema, of being realistic or even logical. Its a military fantasy based off of a toy line which has a very simple duality of good and evil.

Like its previous cartoon and comic-book brethren, ROC is a 2hr long live-action toy commercial.

Seeing it as anything else is to look into places where the movie simply has nothing there.

This movie was the biggest waste of my life, EVER! It is two hours of my life I will never get back.

I really wanted to like it but they changed way to many things about too many characters, that just did not sit well with me. This movie sucked out loud!!!!!

I saw the previews for this movie called 9?? There were actually quite a few previews before ROC started and most looked failry decent, Shutter Island looks freaky, but ANYWAY...

I still think a G.I.Joe cartoon movie done in the style like this 9 movie (Tim Burton) would have offered up a lot more for us fans, than the live action avenue provided.

I agree that it was just a toy commercial. It may have worked on that end too. The best part of the movie for me was listening to a couple of the kids that were in theater.

But being entertaining doesn't have to real out a little more depth or at least LOGIC does it?

Vh, I didn't see the 9 trailer when i went :( my theater has a really bad habit of only showing 1 or at most 2 previews before a movie.

Bad editing??

If anything the film was quite well edited, do you mean bad writing instead?

As far as editing goes, the scenes were cut to just the right length/timing to hold interest.

There was enough time to see things, and understand what was going on, yet still have a fast pace. For an action film, that's a good thing.

No, as you can deduce from the novelization and the trailers/commericals, many of the scenes were there or longer. Editing isn't merely the splicing together of film to create pacing or adding wipes or cross-cuts or emotions. It is also choosing which scenes and shots to use and which ones to remove or shorten.

Yes, Sommers had final cut. He could choose the length and composition of the film.

Bad choices for what was left in and what was cut. Bad editing.

I agree with you but we also don't know what all was filmed from the books. I'm sure the DVD will answer more of our questions about what was cut out.

I'll admit the pacing wasn't as bad as it could have been, but overall things were cut that would have built up Hawk and Destro a little more at the least.

Zartan and CC seemed to be on the cusp of being great characters, but never got the chance to be fleshed out further.

I think the point is they will get more "fleshing out" in the sequel.

I took it to be McCullen's plan because, when he talks to Duke, he tells him that the world will turn to the man with the most power (I'm paraphrasing) and Duke replies you? McCullen says, no, you don't see the bigger picture.

I also didn't mind all of the newness to G.I.Joe. I liked the new Cobra Commander and how he came to be. I liked more or less the novelization. What I saw on screen was poor: the acting, the dialogue, the CGI. I also would have liked it if Cobra had more conventional weaponry.

Maybe. I just got the impression he wasn't aware of what Rex was up to.

One thing I noticed looking at Cobra Commander in the store is that the toy is "hamburger face" (and the file card says "severly burned") but Rex just looked old and whithered, not really "burned". In fact before McCullen got his metal head, for a second, I thought HE would become Cobra Commander, based on what we knew of the character from the toys.

And I STILL don't see why the it was necessary to put on that clear mask over his classic looks. He didn't look menacing or anything. He looked like he was going trick or treating or was getting ready to rob a bank.

I gotta disagree on the "toy commerical" angle. We didn't see enough of ANYTHING to really sell anything toy wise.

Vehicles, maybe, since the showed several (Mole Pod, Night Raven, Shark, Rockslide and Steel Crusher). But they missed a lot off opportunites to do conventional Joe Universe vehicles I think. Are we getting that Joe Transport as a vehicle? Personally, I thought was a little overdone when they could have used an Osprey or chopper. Characters? Why no "McCullen" figure (Destro sans helmet) considering that the helmet version only appears for 3 minutes at the end? The only cameo we got was Jinx and that was just fan speculation/hope. And Cobras? We saw TWO (Viper and Elite Viper). Why no Eels, for example? Hell, the could do a "melty head" gimmick for that guy after tha accident. @firedevil@

And I think a "real" pit woulda been more fun lol.

I don't normally post in the Joe forum but I am a huge Joe fan and collector. I am not a random fan.

I must say that I was not expecting the cartoon but I was also not expecting the crapfest this movie turned out to be. At one point I closed my eyes and almost went to sleep.

1. Duke, sucked. Someone made a comment that he cannot hold attention and this is true, everyone was more intersting than he was.

2. Yes, the nose and lips on SE was terrible, also he seemed to bulky for me, other than that he held the best scenes in the movie

3. Ripcord like everyone else agrees was not to bad

4. Destro was fine at all points except for that he was older, you could of easily used a younger excellent actor to pull it off, this is an action movie with sequels in the works and Destro is an action villain. Also the nanites used to create a metal face sucked.

5. Baroness was cool, didn't like her origin with Duke

6. Darth Vader....opps...CC sucked. His origin was good but made stupid by manipulating his sister and revealing himself to Duke. Also he just plain looked stupid. As a CC fan, I liked how he made Destro his #$#@#, that was the best scene....Also when he says, you can call me Commander.

7. I didn't mind Zartan, he may play a deeper role in the next movie, though I wished he was truly a master of disguise instead of the nanites used to change him, he should have props to infiltrate the Pres and become him

8. Paris scene was cool, I still hate the accelerator suits

9. Hawk sucked and if Brendon plays Flint then I may shoot myself in the foot. I know Brendan is old but he still has that young pretty boy thing which sucks, this is done to appeal to women which is why that dude was cast as Duke

10. OH YEAH, THE HELL WITH HD GIVE ME ROADBLOCK, RB should of been in there kicking major ass, but no instead with get a copy with a sissy accent.

You can blame those parts on Hasbro.

Although I thought the Eels were driving the mantis's or whatever they were called. The troopers were so generic it's hard to tell.

There is some very glaring omissions obviously but there are also some good memorable ones kids can pick up. The Cobra drop shop/copter w/o wings whatever was so much cooler than the toy :( But kids can still grab and even the baroness w/ the drop ring thing (that didn't really make sense either way.) They could the Night raven, duke, pit commandos etc.

There might also be more coming down the line. Hasbro can't release it all at once and they might be trying to spread out the movie accurate toys for a bit.

hilarious gijoe movie review

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F6zKAOe7Qs

warning it has some strong laugauge

Apparently we disagree about everything else, but at least me and the reviewer agreed there was no logic to this movie!

These guys don't seem to bright. They point out that it glorifies nationalism, patriotism, militarism and bigotry. Then declare these the greatest of evils of the world. So it's bad to have pride in your nation? To enjoy and be thankful for freedoms? i think they are the "cogs" As for military? pacifism won you know rights, but that's another argument. I'm still trying to figure out where the military was in this movie @loll@

They do make a great point about ripcord being the "dumb black guy" it's sad but they are right about it. He is portrayed very stereotypically and i can understand someone taking offense to him. At the same time however HD is portrayed as competent and a strong leader so there is balance. He was primarily meant to be a goofball, not a black goofball (something i wouldn't say for the twins in TF 2)

One question:

WAS this G.I. Joe?

Yes. It was just as much G.I. Joe as anything else with the G.I. Joe name on it. Even if some of the character details were changed and at least one performance fell flat (Duke), it still "felt" like G.I. Joe.

Well I was finally able to see the movie last night and I enjoyed it. I guess Tatum didn't annoy me as Duke like he did a lot of people. The only thing I really didn't care for was the Baroness turn at the end.

I do any a couple things I want to mention. First it seems like a lot of people had issue with the goatee on Duke. I saw it, and the scar, as a homage to the original 12" Joes. Second, was it just me or did the little "scars" behind Desro and the Baroness' ear from the naonmites look like th Cobra symbol?

I agree. For example, when someone runs TOWARD a building that's about to blowup and the explosion knocks him ten feet away he SHOULD have burns if he's not dead. Here's another. If an SUV explodes and rolls over six or seven times the occupants who don't die ( @hmmm@ ) shouldn't get out and walk away like nothing happened. I realize that this is fantasy but it's still fantasy set in the real world.

There were four types of Cobra Trooper in the movie:

The Viper Commandos in the initial convoy attack.

The Neo-Vipers during the attack on the Pit (They look very similar, but are actually different from the Viper Commandos)

The Elite Vipers (Guarding the ice-hangar)

EELs (Driving the subs)

5 if you count the "Star Trek" looking MARS Technicians in the Arctic Base control room.

I absolutely loved this movie!

To all the plot gripes pointed out in this thread-

Well, many of you are right. However like others have said I wasn't expecting Casablanca here I was expecting the absurd fun from the cartoon/comic I have loved all these years.

As recently as the second trailer that brought out the Sigma 6 suits, I had huge doubts about the movie. Once all the TV ads started popping up featuring other elements my hopes were raised and I was not let down.

Honestly, Duke's thugonomics accent was the biggest distraction for me, and even that is a small gripe. I suppose that is the norm for "hip" these days though.

Bring on a sequel, please.

One question:

WAS this G.I. Joe?

The way I managed to get around my personal unachievable expectations, was to just block out that this is suppose to be a G.I.Joe/Cobra movie (despite the name ROC) and just take it in, as a movie that REMINDED me a lot of G.I.Joe and Cobra, and was pretty cool.

You did spy a cobra symbol!

The scar maybe an original joe thing, but it also was on Sigma Six duke

alright guys, finally here is my "review." not much of a review more of a long list of complaints. Think I missed anything let me know!

I'd like to start off with something positive. This movie was safer to take kids to than TF 1 or 2 . That really bothered me about those movies! If I was a parent, my kids would be seeing those films in till they really were 13.

A lot of people have praised how fun it is. I don't think you have to make a “dumb” movie to make a “fun” one. Here are my complaints:

Logic fails/ plot holes

“Weaponizing” the nanites with nuclear power would if anything at all destroy their programing.

Taking an Elevator from a collapsing, exploding underwater ice station, through ice that's crumbling and exploding is not going to work!

An army scientist is not normally going to Turn evil in 3.4 seconds because “nanites are cool”

Dr. Mindbender is said to still be alive, but is nowhere in the film aside from the flashback. Where is he? (They could fix this in a sequel)

How did the Joes get to build a gigantic underground base, NEAR THE PYRMAIDS with no one noticing?

How did they move millions of galleons of water there? Above the main part of their training facility?

How come in the lower parts of the pit they left bar underground walls exposed? How the heck are the holding this base together anyways? One earthquake would destroy them.

How did so few cobra's sneak in, with almost zero stealth and do so much damage?

They Left Hawk alive just so he could push the alarm?

When Hawk was down there was no clear chain of command, who was in charge?

So Baroness goes from Bad butt who misses her brother to loving Duke again and helping hunt down her brother? Quick snap there isn't it?

If CC had all the control devices, wasn't he really in charge? But yet he took orders from Destro, in till he fixed his burnt face. Destro suddenly was docile. Who is really in charge? The movie never made it clear.

Where did the cobra logo come from on the sub at the end?

If you wanted to damage why use war-heads like that? Briefcase dirty bombs, a stealth Mach 6 jet (clearly Mach 6 is 6 times faster than Mach 5 in this movie) or just the dang rotor less helicopter they were flying every could have dropped them easier.

Why would you trust your top gear to new provisional recruits?

Isn't it lame how the regular soldiers had code names? (Ripcord and Duke, but not Rex, go figure) So who has code-names and who doesn't?

How Did MARS create a base in the arctic with no one noticing? Did the good guys not have satellites to pick up fishy activity? Where their no scientists up there?

If it's the “rise of cobra” how come they didn't rise at all? They were “cobra” for two seconds.

Why did Destro give in to it so easy?

The invisible Camo doesn't make sense to use on such thin and flimsy fabric if they have things like sigma suits, submarines and stealth jets.

The Invisible Camo had zero uses in the plot.

Baroness knew write where to throw stuff to reveal scarlet

Are we to believe the only interaction that se and ss had were as children? But they still recognized each other as adults? Stormshadow ran away as a child from training and yet still turned into a master assassin? Se, and apparently we are supposed to, believes a kid killed the ninja master so close to all the other students?

Btw, a kid named himself Snake-Eyes?

Why Did Baroness need a husband to earn her name? Why use the name DeCobray? Is that a little silly? (DDP fixed this btw that's not her real last name ) He just served to bring in a cool scene, and show how evil some of the villains were.

Why would a rich Baron have such an elusive and obviously untrustworthy wife?

No security cameras or alerts picked up or noticed of the brake into the pit? Yet that have holographic technology?

No ground back up was needed ever to support the alpha team?

If you had outfits that could make you invisible, and you needed to sneak up an assassin, wouldn't those be helpful? Yet there not in the paris scene ? Oh wait maybe it's because they have the Joe logo all over them?

What unit is Duke in that he gets to keep the facial hair? What purpose did it serve other than to differentiate him from classic duke?

Is everyone in the unit capable of piloting every craft they have on expert level?

Why do the soldiers like keeping their helmets off? That makes ZERO cents.

With all the High tech gear, HD, scarlet, or duke and rip ,when not in sigma suits, don't get HUD displays?

So a lot of people including covergirl were killed at the pit. Barely any emotion ?

Did CC have the materials to control Destro around, saving them just for the right time?

You can test for emotions, pheromones anyone? Neurochemical responses? Scarlet isn't apparently as smart as she thinks

Cgi:

Destro's face mask look like still images and copy and paste methods to make him talk.

The water level's cgi is on par with early ps 1 graphics, and I'm not even talking cut scenes.

Errors:

In the Se vs. SS final battle as the camera roles around and briefly cuts SS goes from having short gloves to long gauntlets for no reason.

I'm not sure what is Se is wearing when we see the white bordered Arashakagne patch on his right shoulder. Is it or is it not on the Paris Pursuit jacket?

Costumes:

Why would there be left over startrek tng movie/late ds9 error customs in the movie?

If Se is wearing some sort of armor, why is it molded to look like muscles? I remember a shot of him in the trench coat at base where he didn't appear to have the armor on. The original images with the mouth showing were him in cloth not rubber!

Why on earth would a top secret unit fill their uniforms with their own logo?

CC's Final mask served no purpose and did not look good.

Acting:

Too many flash backs, some of them did seem there just to help Miller convey emotion. It felt like more of the story happened in the past than now.

Most of the characters were VERY flat. Hawk and Duke seem to be the worst. Very one -dimensional. Hawk barks orders, Duke tries hard, wee!

Differences from the source material:

I can't list em all but are some that REALLY bothered me.

HD appears to be the field commander for Joe alpha team. He was such a minor character this role could have been filled by Stalker.

“CC” actually says “Call me Commander” and leaves off the cobra.

CC actually has zero charisma, unlike comic cc. He didn't build any army, he didn't convince others to donate to his cause, he just used someone elses invention to control a few key people. It makes most of the villains have the potential to not really be evil. It also means the good guys might be killing people who are under mind control and otherwise would not be evil.

Not only was the film international it seemed to make every effort to stay away from America aside from a British U.S. President?

It's also a logic flaw that the world's best would all be put into a pool rather than reserved for their own countries.

Se is now a ninja first before being a solider. Was that really necessary? How is he that Bad A if his training ended as a child?

They jumbled so many elements around that it really bothered me. Why did Dr. Mindbender look like Dr. Venom? Why did “Doctor” (cc) look like Mindbender? Why did Scarlet have extra brains? But Covergirl seem to be just what she was supposed to hate being thought of as? A pretty face?

Why was the Ripcord/Scarlet flirtation necessary? If they hadn't had the unneeded Baroness/ Duke relationship duke could have tried but in the end she went with Se. Now that would have been a nice Nod to fans and less convoluted.

Baroness is good? That would take a lot to undo, they really ruined the character.

I'm sure we will never know how many of these sticking points are Hasbro caused. They love HD, and they have wanted to move Joe away from soldiers more and more. So maybe they are to blame for a lot of what I hate.

This movie however did not “rape my childhood.” it was just a bad movie I still love Joe, primarily the figures. Some of which from the movie are actually really good! Hopefully they will listen to some of our complaints and please even more of us the next time around.

Imo, this movie was okay for kids, it had moments that reminded me why I liked Joe, but this wasn't a good Joe movie, or even a good movie.

1 1/2 stars out of 5.

Well saw this yesterday morning, and while the purist in me winced at the changes made to the movie, I gotta say I enjoyed it much more than Revenge of the Fallen which was utter garbage. I'm sure we all agree on some of the major changes that were wack. So I won't go into them.

I will say what I liked, well especially liked.

Cobra Commander making Destro finally realize who's in command. I geeked out at that moment, no lie.

Snake Eye v Storm Shadow, very nice action scenes and a pretty good back story!!

Zartan at the end; in the mother of all impersonations!!

What I hope for in the next movie.

Flint and Lady Jaye

Cobra Commander with metal mask

Crimson Guard non superhumans!

Tomax and Xamot

More key Joes

More specific pilots, Wild Weasel, Ace, Wild Bill, etc.

Y'know revSears, I'll be perfectly honest; I was reading your points and disagreeing with every one, except for this one. It does kinda take the edge away from Cobra Commander, to think he was just a scrawny punk scientist that resorted to his nerdy knowledge of nano-technology to create his army instead of being this bad-@$$ Euro-trash terrorist that had climbed his way to the top so to speak after years of illegal, black-market, quasi-military activities and pure ol' fanaticism. But then I have to ask myself: Which one is scarier, for him to have built his army from dangerous mercenaries and fanatical miltary dissidents from the worst warzones in the world, or for him to be this crazy scientist with intimate knowledge of deadly, terrifying technology who has built his army with people that are under mind control and will carry out horrific acts with no pain, no fear, and no emotion? Both are pretty terrifying to me really, but you still make a good point.

The way I managed to get around my personal unachievable expectations, was to just block out that this is suppose to be a G.I.Joe/Cobra movie (despite the name ROC) and just take it in, as a movie that REMINDED me a lot of G.I.Joe and Cobra, and was pretty cool.

I like that answer.

And Cobras? We saw TWO (Viper and Elite Viper). Why no Eels, for example? Hell, the could do a "melty head" gimmick for that guy after tha accident.

The movie "Eels" were driving the subs......they looked just like the figures.

Actuallly, I think the Eels and Elite Vipers ahve the same head sculpt (toys I mean). The underwater battle was hard to follow. I didn't even notice those guys (obviously)

Really? You saw NOTHING wrong with the movie?
