My sick and twisted imagination!

Spending some time at the parents homestead here, and they cleaned out some old storage areas and discovered some of my old drawings from grade school and beyond.

Me and a buddy were both into drawing and both liked war themed stuff, and we would come up with all these wild drawings of soldiers in fields of hidden traps and whatnot (inspired by The Green Berets movie) and I had thought these were lost forever.

I have folders full of these things.

It looks a lot like my stuff when I was younger. All kinds of ideas put down on a page. I revisit them from time to time because stuff like this is a fertile ground of imagination, and a healthy reminder of where the passion come from.

Of course, those drawings were what we'd do during class (oops) or during study hall, just from thought to paper and free hand.

I also liked my super hero's and comic books and I have a whole entire folder of my attempts and drawing them. These were drawn from LOOKING at another picture of the character from a comic book or something and then I'd try to look at it as I would draw it myself. I hadn't developed the ability to draw like this on my own, without a template to go by.

Many friends would say I "traced" it, but it was just me looking at the picture and re-drawing it, and then coloring it in.

I can look at some of these now and see some of the funky proportions and whatnot, but it was something i really enjoyed doing....A LOT!! Then there's my old models I spent hours putting together, and they even have THOSE saved for me.

PARENTS!! ^_^

Dan, I'm serious when I say that you should have stuck with this.

Just these few drawings show all the foundations that many other cartoonists have started out with.

All you need is the requisite head injury as a child and you could launch into a new career!

Exactly!

My friend and I had all the comic books like Sgt. Rock, Sgt. Fury, Weird War Tales etc..etc.. and of course we dug all the same war movies, like The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, Kelly's Hero's, Battle Of The Bulge, The Green Berets etc..ect.. We both grew up with our 12" G.I.Joes, bag fulls of little green army men and gray nazi's. Our imignations were pretty much right on par with each other, and we would draw all these adventures out on paper. What we became to old to do in the snadbox out back, we put on paper.

It's no wonder that when the ARAH line of G.I.joe toys came along, it grab my imagination by the nutsack and pulled me right in. It was everything I gravitated towards all in one big toyline. :)

I have a question on an old comic book character I drew as a kid, and it had it's own series of comics, but I can't remember the name of it now. It had a lead character and a group of soldiers (like Fury had) but I don't recall the main characters name.

Here's the picture I drew of him, and he had a wooden leg. One comic book adventure had him break it in on parachute jump, and it was always a bit of a handicap (obviously0 for him, but it was still a cool war comic.

Any ideas?

@haha@

I appreciate that Ken....I take that as a very huge compliment.

Boy, if I had a dime for everytime my family and friends have brought up the question to me, as to why I never pursued anything with all my drawing I did when I was younger. I guess it always seemed more fun as just a hobby?

This one was too big to get on the scanner, but I never finished it anyways, but I was always pretty impressed with myself on how it was coming out. The newspaper had this imagine in it of the old Flash Gordon comics, so I cut it out and started on my masterpiece with it.

The damsel in distress (at his feet) was kinda silly looking, so I found another that looked sexier (IMO) and added her instead. I'll shift the paper around to try and cpature her.

My caricatures were fun also.

Our football coach in HS (Skildaney?) is a college football coach now. I can't remember which team, but when i saw his name mentioned during a game this past season, I couldn't believe it. meaner' than a snake!

YES!! @bounce@ @bounce@ @bounce@

Man..that's awesome that you came up with that. I had forgotten all about that comic until I saw my drawing and the memories came back. That was a cool comic as well and I'm going to have to re-visit it some more, with that link. Thanks!

Seems we had our ARAH teams long before hasbro came up with it? ;)

You can almost tell by the drawings what movies were affecting my imagination at the time.

I think this one was influenced by some movie about a Giant Gorilla? ^_^

dude I used to draw the same stuff kinda!

I would first draw a big landscape.. mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc.. often with a giant gorge in the middle..

then on each side I would draw in soldiers and vehicles of all kinds (grunts, scuba guys, arctic soldiers, paratroopers from the sky, ninjas, etc)

then, after I had finished the entire drawing, I would have them fight! I would draw the bullets flying from one guy across the page to another.. then scratch out the dead guy.

by the end of my playtime, I would have a page full of scratched out guys and exploded vehicles..

seriously a great time for a kid

Glad you guys are getting a kick out of these. :) I know I was really enjoying myself going back in time looking at them.

Thank goodness my parents are pack rats and save EVERYTHING! If I scrounge around enough, I mind find my first shitty diaper? @haha@

Mind you, I'm only one of six also, so there's TONS of stuff for each.

More of my super hero era..

I'm seeing some dates on these, and my super hero (in color) era of drawing looks to be winter of 1979 (I was a Junior in High School) and my Uncle had bought me a set of fine tipped ink pen, that required indian ink to refill and there was like 12 different styles and tips on them and came in a round case. I'd still use color pencils (over crayons @haha@) to color them in and them my Mother had the great idea of spraying them with hair spray when I was done? @hmmm@ Don't know if that preserved the coloring and ink or not, but they lasted longer than the paper is holding up.

These would have to be some of my very first drawings (Jan.1972) and all I did was sit at the kitchen table on Sunday and draw the comics in the Sunday paper.

My brothers MAD magazines became a source of inspiration as well..

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4305/clinteastwood.png

..and along with all my super hero comic books, I can't leave out my fun of drawing from the pages of my Sgt. Rock comic books...

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5633/rockc.png

To show some of my warped imagination again (besides my death trap WAR drawings)

This one was drawn in June of 1980, when just being out of High School meant MORE time to spend in the video arcades and ASTEROIDS was the popular game, and i decided to show what those poor guys must be going thru in that asteroid field..

Might as well pay tribute to where all this drawing infatuation originated from, and that would be from my father who started drawing at an age a bit older than I did, but he didn't have the same inspiration as I had. ^_^

http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8126/dadsdrawings.png

1944 is the date on that one (hence it's relative reference) and my dad would have been 13 going on 14.

he has a folder full of his drawings and he even used water color paints on many of his, but he enjoyed drawing war planes, castles, light houses, wild animals, the cover of the book CALL of the WILD and stuff like that, but it was his comics that impressed me at a young age...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. :)

I think I've subsituted my love of drawing (and even my old model building hobby) with all the G.I.Joe collecting and customizing stuff I've done for the last 20 some years.

Over the years, I've still dabble in the drawing stuff, but mostly just the caricature type stuff of a fellow employee or customer I wanted to make fun of (or I should say..HAVE some fun with) and at one point, my old boss wanted me to draw these caricatures of the entire service sales team to put in the service/check in office, and even had his secretary take pics of all of us for a reference for me. That kind of thing overwhelms me though, and probably why I still just do it for fun. ^_^

Once it becomes a "job" I get frustrated and too critical of my work and I never finish anything I'm called upon to do for another. For myself, and for fun only....no problem. Once I hear the words..."hey that's good, can you do......" I get all discombobulated.

Holy crap! I used to draw the EXACT same stuff!!!!

Whenever i was board at school i would draw huge battles like that. Ahhhh man those drawing brought back some good memories.

When i got a little older i picked up a "How to draw Marvel Characters" book and moved on to tracing. I still have a lot of the traces i did, i used to love that stuff.

Thanks for sharing man!
