I know the series just started, but there is alot to see in those short clips that HissCommander has been feeding us. (BTW, thanks for that. ;) )

What are some of your favorite things you like about G.I. Joe Resolute so far?

I for one love the fact that Joe HQ is on a slightly futuristic, state of the art aircraft carrier. The U.S.S. Flagg is perfect for what G.I.Joe always needed. Now I REALLY want Hasbro to re-issue that 7 foot monster. @lol@

The only dislike I HAD was the short clips, but they seem to be coming at us several times a week. Thanks to other peoples' hard work, I can just watch them as they pop out on the net. @smilepunch@

Dude, 6:00pm (eastern time) on www.adultswim.com all week! 2 new ones a day. The last 10 mins. won't premiere until Saturday at midnight on cable, but afterward the whole thing is supposed to be available on www.adultswim.com. As far as dislikes, I was a fan of the comics so I don't know how I feel about SPOILER ALERT: Storm Shadow being firmly established as a bad guy. It IS more believable and makes more sense that way though. I hate to say it.

I'm a little disappointed with Flint's voice. It seems like the actor is trying to sound like the the old Flint voice from the 80s. It's not working. All in all it's a pretty good revamp. They're doing some interesting things with it. I don't really care for the complete abscence of Hawk, but with this particular version of Duke, it's not as noticable. I hope they make a full series!

The characterization, for the most part, if AMAZING!!!! This is what I always envisioned G.I. Joe "really" being. CC finally as a bad-@$$, took long enough! COBRA finally acting like a viable terrorist organization. A Legit Hi-tech Joe Base.

I only hope that they continue the series post-movie, and keep it the way it is, on Adult Swim(possibly edited down for the kiddies after school).

man so far i love everything and we need a flag. i can over look the small stuff like dial tone being a chick and doc the oldest of the team. man this is a home run for joe fans. i hope they make more even if it is straight to dvd for alot more 1+hr long shows. or adult swim picks it up full time.

Pros / Wins!

people actually die!

Major Bludd is killed for treachery

Bazooka RIP

character developments for Scarlet, Duke and pretty much the whole Joe team done very well w/ exception to Beach head (see cons)

when team members go out on missions they wear the appropriate mission gear (exp: if Scarlet flies a jet she's in a pilots smock)

Dialtone is a girl waiting to be promoted (great call there), Ripcord is white, and has a bad sarcastic attitude. Gung Ho and Roadblock are typical.

Drama and tension between Scarlet and Duke "me or him, you choose"

missions are well written, accidents happen like when tunnel rat lost a few men

classic 007 type gadgetry, helium satellites, missile projection TV,

references to real world technology and tactics, HAARP towers, extremely high altitude ballooning

considerations made to real limitations in technology, glider packs not designed for HALO drop

It's all in the details and the writers got that cold.

Firefly, Baroness are typical

Cobra Commander is PURE WIN! I never like this guy in the cartoon and tolerated him in the comics. So to get me to like this guy was well done!

Cons / losses!

James McCullen Destro became "VIN DESTRO"

Destros design is horrible again "VIN DESTRO"

Storm Shadow is PURE LOSE!!!! Making him the original murderer of his uncle and making him this vengeful jealous guy is just a completely different character. Even in the original cartoon SS had more honor. The back story of the uncles murder is not GI Joe, it's something else.

Zartan, why do I get the feeling that the writers are referencing the whinny wimpy version from the cartoons and not the highly intelligent and ballsy Zartan of the comics? Oh that's right, cos they changed the story of Storm Shadow and well Zartan get's changed as well.

Beach Head! Oh kay, one would think that by now the one cool dude with commando gear and mask would be on his own running recon, sniping or blowing things up...and when he's not alone all by himself waiting for something to kill he's un masked out yelling at new recruits on the rifle range, right? Wrong! he doesn't even get a line. Comm'on writers, like Snake Eyes is the joes version of Storm Shadow, Beach Head is the Joes Firefly...would have been nice to see him treated as such.

Oh and did I mention "Vin Destro" is PURE LOSE!?

I haven't actually watched any of them. I decided to wait until I can watch them all together.

So, that being the case, think we could cut down on the spoilers and things?

I haven't either - waiting to see it in full on Saturday. BUT I knew full well when I clicked on this topic that there would be spoilers. It should be plenty obvious. If you don't want to see spoilers, don't read the posts. It wouldn't be much of a thread if people couldn't talk about the show. I don't mean to sound like a pr!ck, but it's not fair to the folks who have been on top of every net-airing - they're not giving anything away that we didn't have equal access to. It would be different if people were giving away secrets to something that hasn't been widely released yet.

I think for me some of the voices, say for example like Roadblock's and Gung-Ho's, are really over-the-top and almost annoying. And I hate Destro's speech impediment! (lol)

Otherwise, this series is perfect. I love the character designs and their more-adult/realistic characterizations. I also love the specials effects, like when the weapons fire (No more lame lasers! Yay!) and whenever there are explosions and such. It just seems the effects are very realistic for a cartoon. I also love how it's like you have the coolness and technology of Sigma 6, yet you have this realistic ARAH feel to it at the same time. It's just perfect...

I have to admit..I chuckled a little bit when I saw Destro & the Baroness just standing there hugging each other in front of the hostages. I suppose they had to establish that they're linked romantically as well as professional for the novice viewers?

I completely agree with pretty much everything you've stated particularly the part about Beachhead, I wanna see and hear more from him by the time this series is over, course him being my favorite character kinda makes me one sided on the idea.

I'm not to put off by Destro's new bit though, yeah he talks a tad goofy now but it seems like a fairly decent portrayal of the character

I haven't actually watched any of them. ...So, that being the case, think we could cut down on the spoilers and things?

No. Major Bludd and Bazooka are killed right at the beginning!

A pet peeve of mine has always been that stupid, unnecessary "Spoiler" label on any article having to do with any comic book, movie, tv show etc. I don't believe in it. If you really want to shield yourself from information about a certain piece of fiction, steer clear of the topic on the internet. You sure as Hell shouldn't be clicking on a thread that deals specifically with that show!

As to the original question, here's my take so far...

The Good:

1. The plot so far seems very suited to G.I.Joe. It feels like the first mini-series of the 80's cartoon but with a sophistication that makes it more acceptable to a more mature, contemporary audience.

2. The violence and the fact that anyone can die heightens the sense of suspense about these episodes. No one is safe!

3. The designs of the characters are fairly faithful to their original versions with some minor tweaking.

4. The use of the U.S.S. Flagg is nice. It's always good to see the Flagg.

5. The Cobra Troopers have a very nice update to their designs.

6. I like that the Joes have a support staff. It's a very credible element. On the downside though, the support staff might upstage some of the more technical oriented Joes like Dial-Tone, Main-Frame, and Breaker.

7. The romantic sub-plot of Snake-Eyes' feelings for Scarlett is still there.

The Bad:

1. As much as I love the "anyone-can-die" element, it always bites you back when one of your favorites is the one to go! I wish we could've seen Major Bludd alive!

2. So far, much of the show has been focusing very heavily on Snake-Eyes, Duke, ad Scarlett. Let's see some of the other JOes in action more.

3. Where are the Original 13? No Hawk??? No Breaker???

4. So far, I haven't seen any of the original vehicles like the VAMP, the Tomahawk, etc.

THe Bad really are very minor nitpicks. Overall, this has been a great show and quite possibly, the best GI Joe incarnation ever.

Pros:

1. I like how the Joes have been redesigned for 2009, yet still have the trademarks of the character that makes them recogniseable to fans.

2. The new story by Warren Ellis is fantastic. He's done great work for Marvel in the past and even more so on the cartoon front.

3. The plot and characters are believeable as well as their abilties.

Cons:

Nothing really to say.

I bet a lot of you guys know by now but I was disappointed with the origin of the ninjas since it wasn't original and is a bit stereotypical in my honest opinion.

l will not go in detail since it was said in a different thread, but makin SS a stereotypical asian villain=:(

As much as I love the more adult take on Joe, I find little else to love in the series. Cobra's plot might as well have been lifted from a Sunbow cartoon for it's level of over-the-top silliness.

Also, in an effort to jam in as many characters as possible, the lazy writers decided to have a bunch of side stories with tenuous connections to the main story. At the end of the day, what was the purpose of Snake Eyes fighting Storm Shadow? It had so little to do with the plot that it made Stormy's death that much more hollow. They could have put their origin OR their fight to the death in the story somewhere, but not both. The only characters with backstories in the entire show and one kills the other in record time. Very very bad writing. They could have had Snake fight Stormy in the course of solving the main plot and it would have made a hell of a lot more sense. The brief watered down backstory was hard to watch.

Destro and the Baroness are doing what now? Holding people prisoner. Really. And if Baroness threatens to kill them one more time without actually shooting them, I'm gonna cry.

Cobra troopers are even more inept than in the old cartoons. They can't hit anything, act moronically, and get wiped out by the Joes in record numbers.

Let me get this straight. The Joes take a balloon up into space wearing diving suits and attack a completely unprotected satellite. Who thought that makes sense? Couldn't they at least be in space suits?

No one else is bothered by the fact that the more realistic Joes are being led by Duke? Even Hawk is in the new movie. Speaking of which, this thing is way closer to the new movie than people give it credit for. Snake's and Stormy's origin, black Ripcord, Joe team as James Bond, high tech stuff everywhere, etc.

And what is up with the spats? Does every character have to be wearing them?

What exactly was Major Bludd's crime? And why dump his body in the Lincoln memorial? Outside of looking cool, it make zero sense. It was a message sent to the rest of Cobra, not to the US. Dumping him a public place would cause undue attention.

Don't get me wrong, it's not all bad. But it is a massive missed opportunity. This was a gift to the adult fans and they still couldn't get it right. They focused on making it more violent and completely ignored good story telling to do it. I was so jazzed to see it and now I'm not even sure if I care how it ends.

Overall I think it's one of the most interesting Joe incarnations we've had. The great animation, action sequences, mature tone & character design/selection are all top notch & are what I believe Joe fans have always wanted, but I can't help being a tad annoyed with the simplistic storytelling, & the sometimes cheesy & clichéd dialogue.

Then there's Storm Shadow... I mean, I understand trying to shake things up & doing away with some of the old, tired Joe lore, but you can't play Storm Shadow like that. It makes him such a chump & to me, unbelievable as any kind of a powerful ninja. He's just too immature.

WOW and I thought I was harsh with my Cons / LOSE commentary...

I agree with every point, right down to saying I missed a few things for CONS section.

I think it is safe to say that the realistic, everybody can die approach has done a terrific job of hiding all the glaring flaws in the writing.

The nice art work also helps as well as having a Cobra Commander that we can all believe in.

Now as far as leadership with the Joes, that has always been misunderstood.

First of all, 90% of the GI Joes are all enlisted personnel and that 90% is all we have seen on screen thus far.

The only noted officers (outside of Hawk) are Capt ACE, Warrant Officer Flint, Warrant Officer Wild Bill, Warrant Officer torpedo, Capt Doc

The 3 Warrant Officers generally have respect for the commissioned and non-commissioned enlisted side of the house and as a rule function as specialists in their field.

Capt Doc may be an officer but he has a specific duty and his leadership belongs in the ER

Capt ACE is a combat pilot and by all rights would be the appropriate leader of the GI Joe team or at least is someone Duke must answer to since we don't see Hawk.

As far as Scarlet, I think she has been rewritten to have gone green to gold, meaning that she went to become an officer, this point she would be a LT.

Now Like I stated before 90% of the Joes we all know and love are not officers but are enlisted and from there the top dog of the enlisted side of the house is going to be your First Sargent...in this case First Sargent Duke.

So Hawk or no Hawk...Hawk is a general and relies on his First Sargent to move his troops.

I hope this helps you all in understanding why Duke is still the leader of the Joe Team.

Also, in an effort to jam in as many characters as possible, the lazy writers decided to have a bunch of side stories with tenuous connections to the main story.

Dunno if that really holds. The Destro/Baroness team at the HARRP station which is what blocked communication between ground and satellite systems. The Siberian research facility where Zartan was stationed, housed Cobra's nuclear reactor (built from the nuclear missiles still stockpiled there). Both were necessary locations for Cobra to hold onto, in order for their plan to go forward.

The "Stratollites" allowed Cobra to maintain communications (beyond radio signals) while the rest of the world was blacked-out.

None of those, to me, seem tenuous. Two Joe teams knock out Cobra's weapon system, and restore communications to the world. A third knocks out Cobra's alternate communications array, because if the other teams fail, at least Cobra Commander won't be able to coordinate his efforts with the two other sites.

At the end of the day, what was the purpose of Snake Eyes fighting Storm Shadow?

In-story, the point was Cobra wanted all of it's most dangerous enemies dealt with. Storm Shadow and the Cobra Vipers on the Arashikage training grounds were meant to take out G.I.Joe's most powerful member, and allow Storm Shadow his bloody "revenge". Essentially, it took Snake-Eyes *out* of the picture, which was probably a smart move on Cobra's part.

The real-world answer is probably more about Hasbro wanting Snake-Eyes to have his spotlight, apart from the team, where they can play up the mystical and ninja aspects of the Joe mythos without bogging down the whole story with it. Yes, it absolutely could've been integrated into the main plot better, but the origin, the one-on-one dual... it's absolutely in-line with Hasbro's vision of Snake-Eyes as the tentpole character.

Let me get this straight. The Joes take a balloon up into space wearing diving suits and attack a completely unprotected satellite. Who thought that makes sense? Couldn't they at least be in space suits?

You didn't pay attention to Dial-Tone's exposition: the Stratollites are only 20 miles high (IE, in the stratosphere). Well below the Ionosphere, which is why Cobra's using them to coordinate their attacks. Also, they were not defenseless, they had computer-based defense measures to attack anything with a heat signature big enough to represent an engine on a jet or helicopter. So Tunnel Rat got past the defenses by flying up on a balloon. The gear may be odd, but it wasn't frogmen in space, as you so inaccurately put it.

Episodes 9 & 10:

Duke and Scarlett drop into a room full of Cobras who are firing machine guns at them. They pick off all of the Cobras with hand guns while doing nothing to avoid the hundreds of bullets coming at them. So realistic. Cobra needs to invest in an eye care plan for their blind troops.

Zartan was so horrible that I was glad he got shot in the back. I love how he just stood there rambling on and sounding like a child molester while leaving a live combatant behind him.

"Leave me, Scarlett! Let me die!"

"I love you, Duke!" Cue Celine Dion song from Titanic.

Is it wrong to have hoped they would have died in the explosion too?

Destro and the Baroness do more threatening to kill people, yet kill no one. Destro is a total wimp and an imbecile.

Tunnel Rat takes out all of the satellites by himself. Tunnel Rat. The ordinance expert. Yeah, that guy.

I'm sorry, this whole cartoon is a major fail. They built it up as something it is not. It is violent? Sure. Realistic? Not even close. It's a giant turd sandwich. And I'm tired of hearing that the critics need to point out a better version of Joe or that this is better than the movie. Judge it on it's own. This is the 80's cartoon with death. If they wanted to do a final chapter of the 80's toon so bad, they should have done that in the same style. I wouldn't have minded that. Anything would be better than this jumbled mess.

Obviously, I hate it. It reminds me of VvV and Sigma 6. Killing a lot of people doesn't make it better or more realistic, it makes it violent. Why is it so hard to make a good Joe toon?

Cobra's troops are notorious for being bad shots. I guess they still are. @loll@

Duke was injured. Perhaps he was playing "possum" & Zartan just ignored him.

I didn't like Destro either.

Nor did I like that part about Tunnel Rat. @hmmm@

I think this is better than the movie we are getting in August. @smilepunch@
