I wonder if Stone is a renamed Flint. Flint is a kind of stone. Could be.............

I wondered about that myself? At least they didn't name him Lt. Rockhard. ^_^

I should really hate these so-called "expanded universe" figures; I hated it when Hasbro did the same thing for the Transformers movie line. But I find myself loving these. I'm already excited enough about the Joe movie line in general, but these new "off-screen" figures have really got me excited for some reason, especially that Barbeque. I absolutely love the 25th version to begin with, but I love the new colors on this one. I don't know if it's a combination of that and the cool packaging, but I'm loving these. I think also like someone else alluded to, the Barbeque puts me in the mind of Slaughter's Marauders or some sub-line from back in the day. Awesome. The only downside to these is we have to wait until July to get 'em, at least those of us who won't pay the inflated eBay prices have to that is. (lol)

I don't get it, why is it bad to have "expanded universe" characters in a movie (or even cartoon) toy line? Beast Wars had a VERY small cast and had TONS of other figures. For example.

Its a necessity both because you can't have much of a line with, what, 5 guys (Roadblock/Heavy Duty, Duke, Ripcord, Scarlett and Snake Eyes). If you don't include other "non screen" guys, you end up with 800,000 repaints of the 5 because, well, you don't have anyone else.

The only way, I can see, that it would be bad would be what happened to Ripcord. No, I'm NOT harping on the "black Ripcord", I'm talking about Ripcord being included in the 7-pack as, what "Specialist Altitude" or something? One on hand, it might mean we could see "original" versions of characters like Cover Girl BECUASE they have a movie version (ie. Hasbro has the name available) but at the same time it might mean we won't see them BECAUSE they have a movie version.

Kinda like the thing with Dial-Tone. I hope we can get an accurate version, even if they do something "weird" also.

But don't forget it allows them to reuse molds too.

These toys look freakin' great. I hate to say that, because I want to take a break from collecting when these movie lines hit...but man, with the idea that the movie will be terrible these toys more than make up for that!

Maybe not Zartan, but still.

Oh, and somewhat off topic...Channing Tatum's engaged to his co-star from one of those Step Up movies. Sooooo...I mean...can't tell you if he's into guys or not, but at least I can tell you for sure he's digging the female species, too, for what that might be worth.

^_^ I'm just being a d!ck about the homosexual thing (like always) and my issue with Tatum is strickly on a cosmetic level with regards to MY interpretation of the character Conrad Hauser (DUKE) and what this less than rugged, tough and MAN-like actor brings to the table in ability to bring that to life for us, on the big screen. POOR selection..IMHO!

I gotta side with Viper Hunter on this one, I think the role of Duke was miscast in the movie. I always thought of Duke as being a bit older (early 30's), a bit more rugged and worn.

Definitely not a pretty-boy.

Count in me that number. But i have to admit i'm unsure who i'd have play him. I'm not happy with any member of the cast, but oh well. IF they had to make ripcord the black guy(and i don't see why with characters like Stalker, and if we can't use him cause of the name, bulletproof, doc, roadblock(okay lets not start that debate) hardball, apline, even double blast!) they could have at least cast a more serious actor with action movie cred.

Here is the back of Stone's cardback with his bio.

Sgt_Stone_02__scaled_800.jpg

at first i was really aggravated this wasn't at least Lt. Stone, why make a new character? But now i'm wondering if he is canon fodder. That why no would get mad if he was killed of, or at least a setup for a "repaired" officer version in the sequel.

Anyways to me this is the same character, might buy one and customize some sort of detachable robot arm and eye patch.

The cards have really caught my attention, even though i wish the filecards were longer. Maybe that just reflects the short attention span of the younglings today.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head here with it being more of a younger, "pretty-boy" thing with Tatum than my quip about "homosexual" (although he's quite popular with them ^_^) and my feeling is that MOST the G.I.Joe team should be older and wiser and proven veterans of WAR! They've already done their time, been there and done that and have grown older and been called on and incorporated into this special teams, unit of established veterans....with characters like Hawk, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Stalker, Scarlett all being up there in years as LEADERS!

They really MISSED the target on this character, and from what I've seen so far of the actor, he's not only a "pretty-BOY" but one of those sulky, whiny, troubled by their youth (Father was too mean to them) capricious acting, ex-undearwear model, Tyra Banks rejected snot-nosed punk kid...turned wannabe tough guys?

So I'll give him a DOUBLE: 893Yuck-thumb.gif893Yuck-thumb.gif yuk!

They're missing the fact that these guys have all seen HARD times on the battlefield! Fellow soldiers cut down and killed in battle by the enemy....and that's why I always frown on the ONE character in ANY unit of soldiers that Hollywood produces, that is a flake, a obnoxious azzhole who is just SCARED and a coward, but yet he's somehow managed to find his way into a rough and tough band of SOLDIERS like this. Not that Wayans is going to portray this as I just described, but he sure as hell is going to have to do some major ACTING to pull off a respectable, believable role as a member of the G.I.Joe team, and not just some comedy-relief dude with a fancy gun and suit who can't believe he's in the position he is in and being more of a SHAGGY character than a RIPCORD every two minutes in the film! Sort of like the obligatory role that Hollywood creates of some "Cool Black Dude" who goes "DAT IS WHACK!" all the time? <_<

They do tend to do that. To me that is far more racist than having one less black actor, but hey, i think logically, what do I know?

It gets a little worse VH. It appears this duke is

A newbie to G.I.Joe, both he and ripcord appear to be picked up along the way. making duke not the tough field leader. (who is I wonder?) this is from the early script that was leaked out and reviewed on the web recently

I can't say that I agree with the casting either, but I will say that Wayans impressed me in Requiem for a Dream. IMO the movie is doomed, but hopefully a sequel will pick it up. I like X-2...guess I'll stop there.

Well, I think what it is that bugs me is not the actor himself, but the look they have chosen for him.

I know some guys in special forces, and they are not all that weather-beaten looking, and in fact, they look more like how Tatum looks than the "iconic" imagery of a special forces soldier that we ( and Hollywood) often have in mind.

If they had dumped the goatee (which will look dated in about 2 years) and fluffed up the guys hair style in a semblance of the cartoon Duke, I think he would have worked just fine. Not to say that he needs to be like the cartoon or comic character, just that there's a certain heroic look that I think they have missed out on with him as he is.

That kind of thing is just for story points to make the drama work.

Remember NAVY SEALS? Charlie Sheen's character Hawkins was so off-the-charts in his behaviour he'd never have made it through the first mission, much less the whole movie. He was a screwball, and a screw-up in a literal sense and professional teams like the SEALS do not have room for wild cards like him, regardless of how daring he is.

The thing is though, his character made the story more interesting, because pretty much every other guy on the team was a total cipher. So a movie like that will have some cock-up personality simply as a device to drive the story forward in a expeditious way. The TV series the Unit is the same way.

Ed Haney's book about Delta Force, which the series is based on says that most of the guys in Delta are pretty down to earth, and so committed that crap like sleeping with others wives and stuff would simply never be tolerated. They are too professional to get caught up in crap like that, because getting caught would get them booted from the unit.

But the salacious stuff makes for better drama on TV, and so do the kinds of actors they cast in those roles.

Personally, I don't like it either......I know just barely enough about the real stuff to boo and hiss at characters like that, but I also know that ultimately the story itself is just a parable and that kind of character serves a role in it.

Searing hot.......you have the actor.......but name the film.

( IMO, I think its one of his classic roles, but its not a film of his that people talk about all that much.)

Well, for me personally, my problem is that I feel it tends to water-down movie or toon-related lines. I just don't always care to see "off-screen" characters. Like with Transformers, all I cared about were the characters that appeared on-screen. But I can see where there are those collectors that just liked getting extra characters that look like they could have been in the movie, that they fit the look and feel of the others. I just don't personally care for them myself. But for some reason, when it comes to these new Joe movie figures, I'm digging these "off-screen" characters. Geeze...I can't explain it. I guess I just like collecting 3-3/4" figures so much that I'm making an exception. (lol)

And also I get the fact that they want to appeal to the kids too, as they would want a plethora of characters like we all did growing up. (And maybe we still do?) (lol)
