G.I.Joe To Be Like Old James Bond Movies?!?

Sounds good. That's the sort of spy-action stuff I like. Fun, action-packed, and not-quite taking itself seriously enough to leave out crazy sci-fi elements.

Dunno about that "Thunderball times 10" comment though. That would to a large degree suggest that in avoiding the 'serious' direction of the new Bond films, he went over-the-top in the opposite direction... that way lies madness, also known as Cobra-La.

But that way is also the GIJOE I know....and I'd bet others know as well.

GIJOE is not "Blackhawk Down", except in the minds of a few.

I mean, what the frick? Would any of us have gone that rout with the movie? huh? anyone? Would that have even occurred to anyone??

I would have.

Its a "natural" kind of set piece for GIJOE--especially with two opposing forces at play. Movies need a strong visual component to them, and the "Thunderball" example instantly gives a film a sense of scale--its an iconic visual.

I mean.......c'mon......how does one convey an "epic battle" feel its its just a couple of people on either side shooting at one another?

Couple things I feel the need to point out. Maybe I'm taking this the wrong way, but ...

First, it was a joke. No need to give me the 'Joe was never as serious as you think it was' riff, especially considering that I'm often one of the people who spends time pointing that fact out.

Second... no, Cobra-La isn't the Joe you know. That's 80 minutes of hack-job drivel distilled from all the craziest elements of the 95 (I think that's the number) episodes that came before, with little to no regard for the themes, characters, and moments that acted to balance them. I'm one of the people who admits to being able to enjoy the movie, but even I have to 'disconnect' it from the show proper in order to do so. Any semblance of the vaguest realism that the show had gets kicked in the jimmy by that movie about seven minutes in, leaving it straight science fiction being acted out by familiar faces.

Sorry, but there is a reason that the movie is one of the most controversial parts of the entire fandom. It's not very representative of GI Joe in any incarnation, and if the live-action movie IS in fact like it, then it IS in fact madness and over-the-top in the opposite direction from serious. My entire joke/point was that 'times 10' can go many ways, good or bad, but (as I would hope was evident by the first part of my previous statement) I'm still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

hmm.. well I love James Bond movies.

I might like this movie too, if it resembled anything close to GiJoe.

I take that back. This might be a good movie, it just won't be a good "GiJoe" movie.

Transformers was a decent movie too, there was just nothing "Transformers" about it.

But Cobra-La IS the GIJOE I know.

It has all the requisite set-pieces for GIJOE, all the intrinsic elements that make GIJOE work: epic battles, intertwining character conflicts on both sides and a sci-fi military-fantasy premise.

Its exquisitely GIJOE---the ONLY reason I think many fans disagree with it so much is the Cobra-la characters, and the "origin" of COBRA Commander.

Personally, I found it ......still find it far more interesting than the TV series ever was, and much more fanciful ( and again interesting) than the comics ever were--and I was an adult when I saw it.

I mean seriously....The series gave us GIJOE being aided by leprechauns at one point...and the comics gave us characters called the White Clown and Bongo the Balloon Bear......so......what is crazier?

I dunno.........seems like crazy is across the board here.

My point is, I LOVE the set pieces in the GIJOE animated movie. I LIKE the visual aspects of Cobra-La--I have always thought they set what GIJOE is apart from other things like it. Just GIJOE versus COBRA gets............well, kind of staid for me pretty quick. Cobra-La and the fantasy of what it is adds some spice to the whole thing.

AND.........the epic mass battles with EVERYONE fightin' it out........that's a signature thing for me when I think of GIJOE.

Its not just a couple of guys fighting in some obscure corner--its an all-out team-against-team ( GIJOE vs COBRA) battle. That is what I'm hoping to see in the live-action movie--not just Duke and COBRA Commander having yet-another tired climactic fist-fight ( or Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow going at it)--I want to see epic scale. Big stuff. Eye candy boom booms.

Somners can deliver that, and that is what I'm expecting.

Can you give me the episode these leprechauns were in? I'll be the first to agree that there were crazy moments in the series, but I don't remember that... and neither does Google, which makes it doubly head-scratching.

As for the White Clown and Bongo... I'm not sure what's unrealistic about civilians getting tragically caught in the middle of warfare. I mean, you're referring to 'crazy' in regards to their names... in a property that prides itself on crazy names. Additionally, both of them are merely stage names, as both are performers.

But regardless, I completely disagree about the movie being 'exquisitely GI Joe'. It had a greatly flawed plot (even accounting for Cobra-La and it being a children's movie), the few characters we knew who actually got any face-time were terribly inconsistent with how they were portrayed before, and most of the new characters were bad cliches that were completely rewritten in personality (Falcon) and function (Chuckles) so they could be wedged clumsily into the script. These things are not unheard of in the series, but they are not typical of it.

Then we put the over-the-top science-fiction stuff back in, and it's practically unrecognizable as GI Joe, having more in common with the average Godzilla movie or the recent (at the time) Inhumanoids series. This is the main reason that I can find it enjoyable; it throws all caution to the wind and goes for broke on a ridiculous fantasy romp... but that's not the standard set by the series at all.

Even you admit as much, despite your claims of it being 'exquisitely GI Joe'. For you, maybe... but not most others, and for reasons that do have merit. As I said before, it's not military-fantasy GI Joe so much as a straight sci-fi B-movie with familiar faces (mostly in the background, even).
