New Sonic Figures!

I saw the Sonic Colors cutscene myself and I gotta say, I like Tails' voice, I can't put my finger on it but something about the voice needs to change. Overall it does fit Tails and sounds more age appropriate. I just think something about the voice should be tweaked a bit and it'll be perfect. As for Roger Craig Smith as Sonic...well I agree with Tenks to an extent. Of course the actual dialogue is not the actors' fault but I think he sounded a bit too cocky up to the point where he did sound like a douche. The voice to me sounds a bit too grown up for Sonic's nature. Yeah I also am aware that the majority of people wanted Sonic to sound more grown up but he does sound as grown up as early 20's. It doesn't make sense to have Sonic sound more grown up while Tails' is age appropriate. I too am used to hearing Sonic have a light, good natured, free spirited, youthful, fun, and nasally voice. I think every other actor has given Sonic those likenesses in the voice in their own way. Roger Craig Smith just sounds like a 23 year old, douche bag surfer dude in my opinion. Overall I don't think he fits the character too well. Maybe he'll improve overtime like Jason Griffith did but as of now, I have respect for the man himself as an actor. I think he's a great VA but just doesn't fit Sonic.

Oh man,

I know I don't post in here much these days (since I'm working on a manga project), but OUCH. Why did I have to return to that?

I'm totally not a Sonic VA naysayer and I'm sure Smith will be better with time, but seriously, he sounds like one of the tools from Total Drama Island. I know Sonic's always been sorta cocky, but something about the way Smith is voicing his tone in this scene just makes him come off as a doosche. Sonic, despite jossling people from time to time, always had a light-hearted tonage and despite the dialogue, I never really remeber him outright bragging so much as mocking his enemies and snickering alot. Sure he was cocky, but it was more about the subtle things like a smirk here, a grin there and a "You're too Slow!" occasionally. But in that Colors scene Smith DRAAAAGS Sonic's arrogance to a point that he just sounds like the sort of guy you would run into in the gym who comes up to you and says "Hey, IIIIIIII just benchpressed 180lbs." The difference with Drummond and Griffith would be that they would deliver lines like "I was out smashing robots" like it was a fun thing to do, keeping with Sonic's carefree and adventurous spirit without implying arrogance or the like. But when Smith said that line I seriously thought the next thing he was going to say was "I was out smashing robots, how much cooler is that then what you're doing, aren't I awesome. Yeah, I am." BAAH! Maybe it's just the writing in that scene, but YEESH.

The voice itself isn't TERRIBLE, but I think Sonic sounds like he's 28 in this scene. I guess that will be popular, alot of people have wanted Sonic to "grow up" over the years and American culture perpetuates the idea that "everybody should be a badass 28 year-old gunsliger." But eh, I've always seen Sonic as more of a beloved childhood character, so it's a bit odd. The most sobering thought is just re-watch that scene and then imagine Sonic with Mario. Mario's, what, 45 or so? But he sure doesn't sound it. Same thing with Sean Schemmel voicing Son Goku. Goku's an adult, yes, but he has a light-hearted, optimistic voice which reflects the character's own innocent nature. Sonic's a similar case. When Griffith first started out he made Sonic sound too young. I think Smith went in the opposite direction and will have to spend his time with Sonic concentrating on making him more youthful, or at the very least more light-hearted and less arrogant in terms of tone.

Overall, not the worst Sonic VA start, but there's alot of work to be done.

Still waiting for him to punch boulders though. =\

Oh, and Tails sounds fine, but I still can't stop expecting him to say "SAAAAAAASSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUUKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Its a kind of time will tell type of situation. He did come off as arrogant and cocky. YEEEEESSSSS. THATS SONIC. Ahem, well kinda. Its a big part of his personality. So as a fan I was happy to see that. Yet to me his voice sounded so cool too, my favorite voice match yet personally. Yeah heh but dood, it was but one scene after all. It may be one of "5 times" he acts a cocky. Or hell, one of two times he makes a fourth wall reference. We simply dont know. Yeah, I dont particularily see what you mean, but I despise Total drama island myself heh. I suppose he kinda sounds like the announcer host guy on the show actually. But mr smith sounds too unique to me.

Ah, but voicing video games can be difficult what with all the translation stuff. But I guess, the SOUND is what matters the most. Jason griffith sounded very different at the beginning of Sonic x as compared to later (I liked it better myself). So the same may be true here. Ive actually liked each and every one of sonic's voice actors. Its never been like, say, MARIO. While the old TV show mario's voice had a bit of delightful cheese too it (corny and stupid. I like it heh.) was that MARIO? Oh god no. Mario to me has been, and always WILL be Mr charles martinet. But sonic? Hes had too many different voices that all had a similar voice (oh god would that piss some people off heh.) But I can explain: Young, youthful sounding voices usually with energy. The difference between MARIO sounding like a fat 40 yearold plumber (Contrary to popular belief, thats NOT mario, mario is a happy go lucky character with a high pitched voice, kinda like...well mickey mouse.) and having a high pitched voice. Yet sonic has always offically sounded a certain way, even in japan!

So Ive liked them all, but I think Roger is my favorite so far personally. And Kate higgins is SOO much better as tails. OH god yes. True, she also did the voice of one of the kids in the naruto show that followed naruto around for a few episodes. So I knew she could pull it off.

No doubt its some silly writing. But...thats the way it SHOULD be, for the kids.

Oh and as for the sonic figure, I was able to sort of enhance the tightness of some of my figures joints, by running it under hot water, and pushing the peg where it should be. Like, if your figure has this problem, some of them the joints are not fully put into place, and you have one end that the peg isnt going through. OR at times they WILL be together but the peg will not be ALL thw way through both ends. You might want to see if THAT is the case and see if you can get the ends of the pegs to come out on both ends of the joint. Do it with hot water, then when you have it the way you want, run it under cold water, then maybe freeze it. Ive found, that to push the peg in the way I want, I just grab maybe like, something probably plastic, thats small enough to let you use it to push it the way you want.

Not sure if this means anything or not, but another (and better) picture of the Sonic Colors figure has surfaced on UK retailer Argos' website:

208-9281349iSPA74UC895232X.jpg

While the figure does look much better than the last picture, I am a bit bamboozled here. He looks more like a 3-inch figure here, when Jazwares said he would be 5 inches. The Argos site is no help either; they say the figure is 10 cm tall, which is about 4 inches, and Jazwares wouldn't randomly make a figure in that scale. Another thing to note is that Jazwares said that the Wisps' heads would be able to turn. I see no articulation on these Wisps, however.

It could be that this figure could be different from the one Jazwares is releasing here altogether, and that it's being made by another company. No one knows though, and only time will tell.

Personally, I would be fine with either scale. It would be cool to have 3-inch Sonic with completely open and magnetic hands, and little 1-inch or so Wisps to go along with it.

Why the heck does Sonic have arms that are designed like his legs? Now that we're at it, why are newer Sonic figures' legs designed that way? Granted, it is BY FAR the best way to make a character like Sonic's legs but it still limits articulation. I think the best thing to do would be to add a thigh twist.

Uh...whoa. He...looks good!. And....shiny. Why? Different plastic me thinks. The plastic on the 3 inchers is one whole color and unpainted. And what about the other Image? I wonder what the heck THAT means. Even the wisps look different.

It's all relative. Like I said, I don't feel it's the worst Sonic VA start, but Smith certainly has alot of room for improvement.

Sonic is cocky, but his arrogance is more implicite and external than egotistically self-centered. Like I said, we all know Sonic is a confident, cocky character, but he was so in a manner that was almost like a more subtle version of, say, Spider-Man. Both characters actively mock their opponents during battle (Sonic, actually, to a significantly less degree), but neither character was actually internally arrogant in the sense that they never actually BRAGGED about their own ability so much as make fun of their OPPONENT'S lack-thereof. A character can come off as cocky and cool in that manner (external. i.e. being witty during the fight, a smirk here and grin there) without offputting the audience because the actually arrogance is directed entirely toward the enemy (i.e. the character WE, as the audience, want to see fail). But when a character actual starts implicating pride himself, whether through dialogue or simply through tonage, it can immediately throw-up a barrier between him and the audience, because his arrogance is now self-sustained. It's the exact same mentality, and the exact same reason why all the arrogant surfer dudes get killed in horror movies within the first fifteen minutes of the movie(Happy Halloween BTW), they've been isolated from the audience because their arrogance is like a giant off-putting barrier around them. It really isn't the dialogue, nor the pitch so much as the tonage Smith choose to read with, it makes him sound incredibly arrogant to a point of which he is offputting. You called it spot-on in that he sounds like the Total Drama Island host, who is SUPPOSED to be arrogant/overconfident/offputting/a doosche. That guy (dunno his name) and Smith's Sonic have almost the exact same tonage, and that's a problem. =\

As for translation, I think Griffith (despite having the WORST start), did a great job of improving as Sonic because he, and here's the key, started mirroring Sonic's Japanese Voice-Actor. Junichi Kanemaru really has nailed Sonic's character, and towards the end of his career you could start to notice Griffith trying more and more to sound like Kanemaru. Makes sense, after all Sonic is a Japanese character, and when you think about characters he would probably fall in line with in terms of voice the easiest examples are those of anime characters. Like I said before, Sonic has that adventurous innocence found in characters like Son Goku and Luffy, albeit with a more cocky attitude then those previous examples. Still, like I said, I felt Smith simply hasn't captured that aspect of Sonic. I'm not about to burn down the USA Sonic VA Studio, I'm just saying I feel Smith could use improvement in certain areas. That's all.

As for Mario, this voice will always be his best,

This new Sonic is basically on par with Jaleel White, which is basically God Tier for Sonic VAs. As for Tails, well this is simply the best voice he's ever had, and probably the best acting too.

But for me, Sonic and Tails are appetizers. The main course will come this Thursday, when I get my hands on Sonic Free Riders, and hear the new voices for Shadow and Rouge. Those were the two who had the WORST voices of all the 4kids cast, and those are the two I look forward to having VASTLY improved.

DO THE MARIO!

You speak the truth, though i was happy with what I heard, and even though all weve watched is one scene, it could actually be different in other scenes. And what I mean here is different by being MORE cocky and arrogant. Which isnt sonic, he IS cocky and arrogant. But not ALL the damn time. One reasone why Ive always loved sonic is because Im also a pretty big fan of spiderman. Which I feel in some ways their personalities are similar. Like, I HATED the movie spiderman (toby maguire, ugh.) not just the actor chosen, but the way they represented the character. Sure they did some lame little sight jokes (if youve seen them, I can refer to the elevator scene from the...second I think as an example.) but thats not spidey. Hes constantly making quips and being generally funny. Sonic was never quite as clever with his writing. But hed say stuff like, ROBUTTNIK in the satam cartoon. The comics, more recently really, capture his personality reall well I feel. So, while there was some parts where Smith sounded too exagerrated, I'll be happy if theres more "clever" writing in the game. Writing thats fun and silly by kids standards. THATS what matters I believe.

Yes, one part of sonic is his light hearted big brother esque personality. Hes a jerk to the villians, a joker to his friends, but hes still the hero. Well, goku and luffy are naive and clueless remember. Sonic is always cool and quippy, though not a genius like tails, if hes "stumped" he'll acknowledge it and maybe even make a joke about it. But luffy and goku are happy go lucky friendly "idiots" goku being naive and the same with luffy. Heck I suppose the character of naruto is rather similar too. Pretty common in japanese culture I think.

Well it may become clear that he sounds that way during the WHOLE game. Who knows. Still, though they may end up over doing it. Im happy with what I heard. Though his talent will shine through with time regardless Ima thinkin.

Oh god, hahaha. Cant say no to mr albano. Not the mario I know and love (huge mario fan, bigger fan of mario than sonic actually. But not by much Id say.) but yet still awesome. Kinda like Pingas eggman. HAHAH.

oh and I agree with that Aquaslash, rouge was horrrid. Terrible. She sounded like a 40 year old tranny whore. More or less. I hated it. Charmy wasnt too bad. Vector was unspeakable. BUT dan green who WAS knuckles was also vector starting with the Mario and sonic at the winter olympic games. I never found shadow to be bad, but smith could SO do a killer shadow. And yes So far Pollock who voices eggman is the only 4kids dub voice actor to return.

Wow, I really need to check this forum a bit more often, because it grows like Poison Ivy on titan!

Anyway, tails voice was perfect for me, and, as for Sonic, I'm not really sure. He sounds a bit like Ratchet from the "Ratchet and Clank" franchise, though I'm not sure if that makes me more or less tolerable of him. There was also some little thing about his voice that somehow made the game seem more attractive, to the point where I actually want to buy it, whereas before I saw the cutscene I wasn't even planning to rent it.

Like I said before, I don't think Sonic's new voice fits him at all. I miss the 4kids voice cast with the exception of Tails, Rouge and of course Eggman (Since he's still voicing Eggman. Can't miss him if he's still around lol) I thought Amy, Charmy, and Espio were one of the best choices. I liked both Amy and Espio's voices equally, I actually liked Charmy's 4kids voice better than the original since the original always annoyed the hell out of me lol. But the 4kids voice sounded more like a silly little boy which I feel is what Charmy is. Though I'm fond of Tails' new voice but not Sonic's....I do wonder who's voicing the other characters now. I hope they're all great choices.

Ahem... If anyone didn't notice, I OWN 3" BIG THE CAT.

Anyone want pictures? I would gladly take pictures if anyone wants me to.

And not to be a Swindle or anything, but if anyone wanted Vector from the comic pack, I have one on ebay. Starting at $5 bucks. Here's the link if anyone cares.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280583565921#ht_742wt_82

Also, on the topic of voice actors, Sonic and Tails sound great! Sonic sounds like a cartoon character, and this is the best Tails voice since Sonic Heroes! I can't wait to hear the rest of the cast!

Big has excellent articulation. To be specific; his head, arms, elbows, hands, feet, and tail all swivel.

SHAKY WARNING

All 3 Bigs side by side. Left-to-right; Resaurus Big (Knock-Off), Jazwares Big (The best by far!), ToyIsland Big (Sonic X is ToyIsland right?)

Froggy. The camera really didn't want to focus on him. Hard to see, but he has the same great detail we've come to expect from Jazwares. But paint aside, Froggy is, essentially...

post-35928-12886618621817_thumb.jpg

A drumstick. I'd compare with ToyIsland Froggy, but he mysteriously disappeared.

post-35928-12886618679171_thumb.jpg

The playable cast of Sonic Adventure, together again! left-to-right; Knuckles, E-102 Gamma (The real one), Sonic, Big, Amy, Tails

post-35928-12886618843977_thumb.jpg

And every Jazwares Sonic guy so far (I threw Gamma in just because he's awesome)! There's now... too many to list. Also, you can see that Big has a fishing pole! With a big of fudging, you can get him to hold ToyIsland Big's fishing pole. And it's a pretty perfect size for him.

So, what do you guys think? Maybe not good enough for Sonic Gear, but still good shots.
