whats the difference between H.I.S.S. Commander and driver?

well umm, I might be stating the obvious here but I'd say (ignoring filecards) that the HISS Commander commands a battallion/fleet/group/squad/motorpool of HISS Drivers.

We got the Driver single-carded which didn't make sense, and a HISS Commander with a HISS which also didn't make sense - but if we look back to '82 -'83, well the HISS did come with the red HISS Driver. And later on a blue HISS Driver was called "Rip-it" so the HISS Commander is probably a tribute to Rip-it, whether you consider him a named-cobra or another branch of legions, i.e. the Rip-it's it's up to your interpretation.

Physically, the HISS Commander (Rip It) has a crest on his helmet, while the HISS Driver does not.

Job wise, it's a matter of taste. To me, the HISS is driven by a red-suited driver, and 'commanded' by a blue Commander in the gunner's chair. If you think the blue "HISS Commander" is just a shallow repaint, you can discard him and put a Viper or another Driver in the gun station.

A "tank commander" commands a single tank only. What you are talking about are higher level functions, such as commanding a troop/company/regiment/etc of tanks.

According to Hasbro, that should mean that the red driver sits in the cockpit, while the HISS Commander should be in the turret - where traditionally tank commanders sit. Still, I prefer to use the HISS Commander as a named character - Rip It - and just stick Cobra Officers or Troopers in the turret position, like in the old cartoon and comic. So basically, I agree with you, because Rip It seems like the commander of Cobra's tank corps, but it may not be so obvious to someone unfamiliar with GI Joe history!

I do the same. Problem is what do you do with all the extra Rip-Its? lol

I love the Blue Hiss tank Driver. Hell make one in Black too. Call him A Hiss Lieutenant. Make one in white and call Him Artic Hiss Tank Driver and with matching white Hiss tank to boot. Make one Desert sand color and call him Desert Hiss tank Driver with the matching Dessert colored Hiss Tank. The Hiss Tank Driver is Worthy of Respect. Amen. :)

I prefer to use the blue H.I.S.S. Commanders as lower ranked drivers, and use the red H.I.S.S. Driver as their commanding officer, Rip-It. The red outfit just screams elite, like the Crimson Guard. The blue outfit just screams peon, like Cobra Troopers and Vipers.
