To put it simply: It was a twelve issue comicbook released in 1986 that showed what could happen in the world if there really was super-heroes. I've read it several times and I could tell you more if you like but I suggest that you get a copy of it in a trade paperback. There everywhere now and you should experience it yourself. I would hate to ruin it for you....

It takes place in an alternate 80's where Nixon was still in office, superheroes are people who aren't the most mentally stable. And after some really terrible crap superheroes are outlawed but a murder starts bringing them back together.

I'm kinda picky about what I choose to sit down and read. I read Watchmen for the first time when it hit shelves again a couple of months ago, mainly because I saw that movie trailer. Just the way it was written, I was hooked by the first page. Before I knew it, I was halfway through the book. There is a lot of backstory segments that deepen the subjects. It is a very gritty take on a super-hero universe that closely resembles our real world, but there are major political differences. Some have already been mentioned. I plan on reading again soon. If your comic book store doesn't have it, Barnes & Noble does.

And once you finish reading it, go back and reread it from the beginning. Reading it when you know the outcome gives the whole thing a brilliant new angle. I've read it at least 8 times and I find something new and interesting about it each time.

I read the wika page its fine and dandy but it dont really give the ends and outs like some one who really understands it and can make some one else excited about reading it. if that makes since. Like my cousin can see a movie and decribe it to me and the way he decribs it just.. just gets me excited and interested about it and courious about whats its all about you know.

Like many have said before, it's a visionary take on superheroes in a highly realistic interpretation. The gray area exists with the human element and the idea of how heroes of power would really perceive us and perhaps be the most fit to make decisions on what's best for the race and society as a whole..... but it's not nice and idealistic like traditional superhero comics. It's very good and has been recognized outside the comics industry as an outstanding work of fiction. Not much more to say then...........

Buy the Book!!! (err....trade)

It starts off as a WhoDunit? One of the most key superheroes is murdered! He's been around since the 40s and has fought with almost every superhero there is...and when the government outlawed heroes, he went to work for the government.

All of the other heroes have retired. One of the older heroes (the golden age Nite Owl) has written an autobiography. Dr. Manhattan continues to work for the government, but is losing his touch with his humanity and reality. Silk Spectre is his girlfriend, and is treated as just window dressing, which frustrates her. Her mother, the golden age Silk Spectre, is living in a nursing home, giving interviews to magazines like Playboy. Nite Owl has gained weight and has lost his zest for life. Ozymandias has become filty rich and now runs a multimillion dollar company. Rorschach continues to fight underground as a vigilante. PLUS there are the villains...what happened to them when the heroes were forced to retire?

So WHO killed the hero? Why was he killed? Who is next on the killer's list? Is anyone safe?

In the meantime, there are some scary things going on around the world...scientists and artists are disappearing, the politcal scene is getting scarier, the world seems to be coming to an end. How does all of that tie into the murder???

The answers are more complex than you can imagine and the story doubles back on itself again and again, revealing more than you thought.

How's that for a teaser?

BTW, MANY books have come out since Watchmen that are obviously influenced and inspired by Watchmen. Very few of them have lived up to the source material.

sounds good now from what i understand only dr manhatten is truely super powerd. every one else is what kinda like batman ? just ordanary folks who are or were tired of the evil and corruption. Rorschach has just a guiy too right? i know from what iv read around the net they have changed it or twiked it a lil. And from the movie trailer his mask seems to move the black part of it thats why iask if hes just a guy(Rorschach). It sounds pretty interesting and the movie fro what i see looks just out of this world. The only comic iv read in a long time is jospeh michael linsners dawn or cry for dawn. Any one ever hear of it? If not check it out.. But im starting to get very interested....

If we started telling you about Dr Manhattan's powers, or whats up with Rorschach's mask it would give too much away. The book kind of needs to be experienced. If you haven't read it you really need to. It has won awards that literature has one. Its considered a novel not just a trade paperback.

When I saw TDK in IMAX the trailer for Watchmen was shown then. It was the 1st time I ever heard of them. & ever sence I've seen the trade on the book store shelves. But here my consern.

I'm worried that if I read the trade, the movie won't live up to it & i'll be disapointed. & if I watch the movie 1st then I won't want to read the trade. what to do, what to do????

Screw it, I'm gonna read it.

I really doubt that anyone who reads Watchmen today is going to have the same appreciation for it as those of us who read it off the shelves back in 85'-86'.

Certainly a lot of the commentary on the history of super-heroes and their conventions is going to go way over the heads of the post-Image generation.

I've seen this discussed occasionally on other message boards. People are drawn to the Watchmen by the hype and praise and then walk away feeling disappointed. Most contemporary readers have a very impaired grasp of historical context.

Honestly i think the best thing to do is wait for the movie then read it book. thats what happend with resident evil i never played it but after watching the movie i just had to play the game to see what it was all about i think its the same thing here. At least thats the mind set iv come up with. from what every one says its a great read but like you said if u read it then see it it may take away from the book. but if you see it on flim then it may spark something in you to read it and see whats what.does that make since?

Idk with the Watchmen I have a feeling its going to be one of those things where even though it will be the same plot and characters its going to feel really different. Its an amazing story that just has to be read. I really am excited to see the movie but I'm going to separate it from the movie. I'm going into that just wanting to see the visuals and see some of my favorite points from the book realized on screen. And as for Resident Evil the movie compared to the game that is so different. Really the only thing the same is there is zombies in Raccoon city.

I was just makeing the point that i thought the first res evil was really good and wanted to see what it was all about. as far as the game since i had never played it you know. all film adaptations most times will differ from where it started. But the story was told in a way that it got me interested in playing the game and the game was great. I dont think im explaneing it right sometimes its hard to translate what im thinkin. Like i knew of the game and knew a few people who played it but was never really into it. I knew it was popular n all but after seeing the movie it really got under my skin and i wanted to play the game ad see what came from the game into the movie and compare the 2. look for things in the game they took and put in the movie and just feel it out. i think im rambeling. So anyway we will see what goes on i do want to see the movie it looked grand.and i will read it just not sure befor or after yet

This is just my opinion; Read the book first. I honestly believe you will enjoy the movie more if you already have a reference. I've recently read the book again, and I'm more excited about the movie than before. When it comes to this kind of deep story telling, you need some background. I think if you went to see Watchmen with no background references to refer to, it might "fly over your head" the first time. I think you will appreciate the movie more if you know what's going on.

It really just needs to be read.......I was the same way after seeing the Trailer for the first time. I've always read comics.......I was 10 when I really got my first actual comic book that I really remember having. That was 1991.......I always heard about Watchmen and saw stuff about it....but never really picked it up until the movie stuff started coming around. "Oh its the greatest this and that" I just decided to read the thing..........I wasn't disappointed but I did realize that it was something for THAT time period.(80's New York for example should be a character in itself, Pre-Giuliani) From what I understand there really wasn't anything up until that time with that tone in comics.........taking a Grown-Up/Political look at comic book characters.

It really is hard to describe......it really just needs to be read.....but people looking for general super-hero fare may be disappointed. It's not that at all.........its a complex look into the "heroes" and their minds and what makes them do what they do.

Anyone else think that there is going to be a backlash when this thing comes out?? With the general public......I don't think it will do bad at the box-office....I just think that Fan-Boys alone won't be able to push this enough for a smash hit.....plus some of its material is a little harsh. I gotta a feeling some parents will mistakenly take their kids to it too...........and be very surprised.

I just wonder if they updated it for some of the things going on today or if they kept it cold war based.Iv read its been twiked but not really sure what parts they dont give much away in that aspect.Which i understand why..When this series came out I was more into spiderman back then in the 80S so i really didnt know much about it myself.I am like you i only heard things about it as i got older and move to other comics and book.Round about 89 to 90 was when i got into a comic called CRY FOR DAWN by a artist named joseph michael linsner which i have collected ever since. But point is thats when i started to see there were more complex stories and started to hear of watchmen and others. But i got out of comics for a long time except for linsners stuff but after hearing about watchmen for so long and seeing the trailer its one im really going to read. i just wanted to see how passionate people were about this to see if it was more hype than anything. and i see theres a strong base still which shows me theres still something to it.Which i am pleased to see
