DCD or DCUC? which do you like?

DCUC is better on a lot of fields; articulation, paint, SCALE! though ask anyone who has ever bought a DCD, and they will say they are really artist specific.

i personally love DCUC, though i can see why someone would like DCD.

i understand being artist specific.

For me, it varies on toy to toy especially with DCD Rogue Files Croc; I think that toy looks better than the DCSH ver and fits with the DCUC toys.

YES!!! i totally agree.

They both have hits and misses for me. DCD's scale issues are bit annoying, but then you have Mattel being only too happy to use the "standard" mold over and over again even when its not truly a suitable option for the character which is also annoying.

I prefer the DCUC figures overall, but I do appreciate the DC Direct stuff for its accuracy to the source material, the fact that the majority fo the time, figures are unique sculpts, and for the fact that they come with stands. I pretty much only collect Batman related DC Direct figures, so I don't have too many.

Also, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that DC Direct figures actually have release dates and generally release on time. Rather than hunt for months or order from an online store with a high mark up, I've always been able to get the newest DC Direct figures on the day they come out from my local comic book shops, and have even been able to preorder sets I've wanted.

For that reason alone, I'm excited with the business model Mattel is adopting with MOTUC!

While I agree that The Rogues Gallery Croc looks awesome, I tried to remove 2 of the from the package, only to have the arm snap off beyond repair. Same thing with JSA Hawkgirl, took her out of the bubble and the Ball joint on one of her wings snapped. I understand that DCD is a Collectors line, they need to understand that some collectors take their figures out of the package and should give us a product that will hold up through the initial removal and posing phase. DCUC is a better line when it comes to posability and great sculpts that look like they belong together, and Mattel is at least trying to improve. I enjoy ripping into a DCUC package to retreive the figure and BAF peice because I like to disply them together. DCD offers plastic statues that while they look great, are not meant to stand much different than they are in the package. So, I personally enjoy DCUC better.

well..i gotta say that i like DCUC.(as if you couldnt tell) i like the fact that these are the 4-H's take on these characters, not an adaption of a certain artist's work.

i like that too, though ive been dieing for a decently articulated neal adams batman. well, i guess its time to break out the paints...

I like DCUC more, because I think the Horsemen's work is just as good if not better than the sculpters DCD uses, Plus Mattel's cost less. But I still enjoy collecting both as I have more than 1 shelf to display them on.

Prior to Mattel's DCSH line, DCD was the only game in town when it came to us DCU fans getting our 6'' scale action figure fix, so of course, I had no choice but to buy DCD figs, but I always bought just those figs that were as close to scale compatibility with each other as possible. DCD has truly dropped the ball in the scale dept & seems to have moved to the 7" scale these last couple of yrs & deprived themselves of alot more of my $$ due to that alone. I hated seeing a great Balent Catwoman fig towering over all the male heroes, or the cookie cutter McGuiness line that used the same exact freaking body for everyone. The only artist inspired line of figs I ever bought from DCD was the Jim Lee "HUSH" line, I think everyone bought that line!

However, being the scale nazi that I am, I soon grew tired of seeing all the scale screwups DCD kept on commiting with just about every single line they came out with, plus the endless Superbats figs in every wave. I also am not a huge fan of the artist inspired lines. I found myself cherry picking & buying only 2-3 figs a yr & by 05/06, I bought my last 2 DCD figs in OMAC & IC Powergirl.

DCD is overpriced at $16.99 around my neck of the woods. The limited amount of articulation, especially their stubborn refusal to add simple waist articulation, also killed my enthusiasum for the line. I collect "action" figures, not statues, and IMO, that's what the DCD line is, they have maybe a few more POA than McFarlane toys.

I guess, for those of you that are MOC fans, or don't care for a good amount of poseabilty or scale, then DCD is your line, DCSH/DCUC has been a dream come true for this long time DCU fan. Mattel & the 4HM truly know what we DCU fans want out of a line based on DCU characters: the perfect amount of articulation, scale compatibility (LOBO, Sinestro, Doomsday being the lone exceptions), affordable price point, no over saturation of Superbats, great generic, vanilla pose , non artist specific renderings of my favorite characters & best of all, unlike DCD, they love to hear feedback, suggestions & run fan polls.

Let's not forget their online site that will now sell 2 packs & other DCUC figs that stores might not want to carry.

Overall, DCUC blows DCD out of the water. DCD's piss poor showing at SDCC clearly proved that they are done, stick a fork in em!

I wouldn't count DC Direct out so quickly. I feel that DCUC has the potential to be amazing, if it can last. Sadly, most action figure lines seem to be out for a year or two then disappear. There are notable exceptions to this rule, of course, but I'm not 100% sure that the DC super-hero line has the staying power of GI Joe or Star Wars...don't get me wrong, though, I hope it does! I LOVE the DC Heroes and want it to do so well it'll have a LONG shelf life.

DC Direct has its issues (scale and articulation being the two main problems), but it is always available at my comic book store and it's usually available when they say it will be.

Mattel seems to be taking steps to correct their distribution, but when the 2nd wave of DCUC didn't materialize very easily...well, that seems like a very BAD way to start a new line of toys. If they can prove that the figures will be readily available, and have some amazing staying power on the shelves of TRU, Target, Kmart and WalMart, then I may begin to believe that DCUC will overtake DC Direct.

10 years of cranking out amazing comic book specific characters is quite a feat. And, while I don't always love the artist specific styles, it sure is exciting to see. I personally can't wait to see the artist specific George Perez History of the DC Universe line. That's what I'm most excited about for 2009 with DC Direct.

Another issue I have with DCUC is the variant/chase figures. When the figure is the same character in a modified or different costume (a la Sinestro or Deathstroke), I don't have a problem with it. Yes, I do want the variant version, but it's really the same guy. When the variant is a TOTALLY different character (Jason Firestorm or Artemis, for example), I get a little anxious. If I cannot find that variant, then that's a character I won't have for my collection. If we are guaranteed that the chase figures were available (even in limited numbers) through Mattycollector.com, then I wouldn't be so against the variants.

I had the same issue with the variant Batgirl that DC Direct put out in the 1:6 line, BTW. But at least that was the same character in a different costume. If it had been the Cassie Batgirl or the Bette Kane Bat-Girl, then I would have been tearing my hair out trying to find her!

Yeah, I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive about my action figures, I know.

HUH??? you didnt address his question at all, especially with your reference to Marvel Legends.

What he is saying is that he doesn't like it when the variant is a different character because he needs to have both and doesn't feel confident enough he will be able to find them. I agree. If its "maskless" Deathstroke, and he doesn't find him, big deal because he already has regular Deathstroke. But if its the WonderWoman variant, Artemis, he needs to find her because she isn't just a WW in different clothes.

I agreee with ya Muppethost... I dont like it when toylines do that. Marvel Legends did it a few times too that I can remember: Doombot, Dark Phoenix kinda is a different character, blonde Black Widow, ml8 Classic Cap, Green Hulk, Sasqatch, black Spiderwoman, but Genis Cap Marvel and Destroyer were the worst because you absolutely HAD to get these awesome figures.

It depends on the figure. Many DCD figures I have I feel are superior to their DCUC counterparts, with the main exception being the DCUC Robin. He's fantastic. But DCD does artist-specific figures very well, with a few notable exceptions (Michael Turner). DCUC is great for a uniform, generic line that fits in with itself. My biggest issue with DCUC is the 4H's use of the exact same body type/sculpt for almost all of their figures. They all have the exact same muscle structure, and that's always bothered me, even back in their MOTU line. There's no differentiation between sculpts aside from character-specific details. But, it's a mass market line, so it makes sense. I'm still partial to DCD mainly because I love seeing so many different versions of characters. I have a Jim Lee Batman, Ethan Van Sciver Lantern Bats, Matt Wagner Batman, Mike Mignola Batman, Vampire Batman, Ed Benes Batman, Andy Kubert Batman, George Perez Batman, Alex Ross Batman and Frank Miller Batman all displayed together, and it's very striking.

DCUC does sell through comic stores too though. They're available months after the retail chains, but you're guaranteed a set if you have patience and don't wish to spend gas looking.

Yep, that was my point.

If the variant/chase is a totally different character, I wish there were a way for everyone to get the figure instead of having it be short packed in a case.

The 50/50 packing of Superman Red/Superman Blue was great because of all the wave 2 figures out there, they were equal peg warmers. I found those more than any of the other figures.

And, according to Scott Nightlick of Mattel, the Jason Firestorm is still coming. I really want him for a few reasons...

1) he's a different, distinct character.

2) he's a minority--the DCU doesn't have very many ethnic characters and it's great to see them in 3-D form.

3) I really liked his comic book. I know many people didn't like it, but the tension between him and his father and the use of different 2nd halves of Firestorm was interesting.

4) I like his version of the costume.

My real concern is what seems to be happening with the Movie Masters chase figures. Those chase figures are near impossible to find. If the same thing happens with DCUC I will be very disappointed.

I've been clamoring for more Four Horseman styled DC Heroes since 2003. I remember thinking how cool the He-Man toys were in 2001 and when Mattel got the license I was very optimistic. It's been fun. They have their flaws, sure, but the line is still young and I hope over time we'll see many great pieces and new bodies. DCUC has me excited abiout some DC characters like I never have been before. DCD was just too inconsistent for me and I never thought they listened to fans.

That said, obviously DCUC for me, but I think it's nice to have 2 companies making toys in case we need a 'back-up' for a character.

honestly, i havent seen a single DCUC figure past wave 1, so my votes obviously for DCD, which i have no trouble getting

someone earlier mentioned the price difference that DCUC's are 10, while DCD is 15. at any comic/toy show, dcd figures can be had for 10-12 for brand new ones, plus theres normally no tax. while at target dcuc is 11, and walmart has em for 12-something, plus tax, so to me, the price is the exact same. but dcuc figures usually look awesome as a prototype, but kinda cheap looking as the actual figure, especially the different greens on Hal's costume.

surprisingly, ive gotten into the infinite heroes. i have Guy so far, and im looking for the flash 3 pack. from there im basically gonna collect anything JLA related, and some secondary characters i like. plus they take up less room :P

While dcd does have its problems, theyve also made some excellent figures, like kilowog, booster gold, and a cyborg superman thats worlds better than the mattel one

My vote is for DCD..... I am new here but an Avid DC Collector in general. The DCUC figs are great figures but take a long look at every males chins and mouths in the line....It's almost entirely the same damn face!

I can get past the same mold issue because like noted previously it is a big mass market Figure line but the lack of change from one hero's chin to another REALLY irritates me! Also, much has been said about DCD's paint applications at times but does anyone have the Sinestro Corps Sinestro? I have all of DCUC series 3 and I am embarrassed at how badly Sinestro's paint was handled......

DCD is not MENT for you to collect every figure that comes out of production. That is why there are so many different takes on the characters. Sure, the DCUC 3 robin is better than the Son of the Bat robin but is the original Mattel Robin better than the Contemporary Teen Titans Robin? Heck no! Is DCUC Sinestro better than the Green Lantern Sinestro Corp Sinestro? Again, I have to say no....

In all reality We could go on and on about this and get.....nowhere. DCD is a great company with an enormous amount of different takes on our beloved DC Characters. DCUC is a great figure line with the BEST playability that our beloved DC Charaters have ever seen.

Hope I made some sense!
