A lazy fan's thoughts on the 25th Ann. Joes

Recommended Posts

Yea, I'm lazy........I admit it.

I'm not going out of my way to get the 25th Joes, and I'm somewhat behind the curve.........but I'm still having fun and enjoying them and that is all that matters.

This was something of a Joe week in my mailbox.

The great Admiral Hunter sent me some veee-hickles..... Armadillo, RAM-cycle, Serpentor's Air-chariot, and the Trouble Bubble--and Breaker and Serpentor to boot.

Another buddy of mine sent me Stalker, Torpedo and General Hawk.

Not a bad week for a lazy Joe collector, eh?

Some basic thoughts.......I'm digging all the figures. All of them, even though Breaker comes without his gear, and Serpy is sans cape......its still a love fest. I have the first version of Serpy, so I can swap the caped version if I need to. I noted the common web harnesses between Breaker and Stalker, but that's not a problem in my eyes. Soldiers normally share a lot of common gear anyways, and to be honest Stalker lighter green camo duds make him look different enough from Breaker (and Snake-eyes) that the re-used harness isn't that noticeable.

I'm planning on fixing Hawk's collar--once I figure out how ( before I start hacking at it), but he actually looks okay as is.......so I'm thinking.......

Torpedo............sweet. Used to hate the original.....looked like a Downs Syndrome kid in a wet-suit, this new one has the razzamatazz it deserves. I love how you can pin the dive fins to the backpack ( props to JBL for showing that tip).

Breaker is decent enough, and his lack of gear isn't a detriment to me--gives me stuff to hunt for too.

And, alas we come to the vehicles and the Arrow must dine on a heaping plate of crow.

Months ago, I glommed onto the pics like everyone else, and then promptly sniffed at them.

They were missing some key things I sought.........notably added details, on the bodies and cockpits.

Now, I'm having my crow sauced, rather than plain, because PART of my gripes are justified, but part of them are not.

The RAM is a great update of the original, a toy I was ambivalent about. I like the handle bars, and the basic crispness of the new molds. The gun has got some venting ports on the muzzle that I do not remember on the original. The barrel does not rotate, and I wonder if it was meant to.......but that a minor thing.

What really jazzed me though were the saddle paks, and more specifically......the surprise in one of them: a pistol! I read about it on a another toy forum and had to check it out asap. Yeps, its there and it gave me the "cool" reaction I wanted to have.

The paks also fit a bunch of loose bits I had, Duke's binoculars, and a couple other pistols.

The Air Chariot surprised me with the new molded details behind the Cobra Hood shield. Its not much, but it is a little something .....a small touch that I think brings a bit more "oomph" to the toy. This is what I was hoping for initially, and did not see in the pics, and it lead to my dismissal of the vehicles as simple re-used stuff.

The Trouble Bubble--I remember the grief that earlier version of this thing gave me--flimsy as all heck, I never liked this toy before.

This new one is sturdy, holds together well. I still do not like the COBRA sigil sticker on the canopy though, the curvature of the canopy never lets the sticker seat properly--I wish it had been painted on.

The Armadillo..........its still dumb. Its still got the guns coming out of where the control console guts would be, and that is dumb--and the control console is STILL a damn sticker.

But I like the storage cage and saddle bag that hooks onto the side. The Armadillo was the very first GIJOE vehicle I ever bought years ago ( under the precept of using it to mount figures before I found a mess of battle-stands) so there is a small sentiment to it.........but its still dumb.

A nice looking dumb though. The mold, again, is crisp--so either Hasbro has made all new molds or they have cleaned-up/kept nice the old ones.

So, I was officially wrong to sniff at the "re-issued" vehicles, and they are just neat enough to be........neat. They could have gone all out, but there's just enough there to light up the eyes of this lazy Joe fan.

I was rather surprised by the Armadillo myself, and have contemplated grabbing a 2nd, just so I can re-create the poster image of the two of them alongside the VAMP. :)

u get a hiss tank yet? i like what they did to the cockpit (do you call it that even though its a tank? wth it looks like a cockpit)

I love all the new vehicles...much more than the figures actually. All the ones I have any way. i passed on the armadillo pack and never found the sharc or awe at targat. i did get a couple blue hisses from a toy show though, and for only $15 loose with all the stuff they came with :D when i got 3 of the trouble bubbles i was like "what the heck am i gonna do with more than one RAM. But i like them just as much if not more than the trouble bubbles. i like the little updates. and how you can put the old figures in the bubbles since they didn't put a new smaller back peg for the new figures.

Nope, I'm not a fan of the HISS, honestly.

The pics I have seen illustrate that it lacks molded details in the cockpit area. Given the space that is in that thing, I think it s crime it lacks it.

As for the others........I am a LAZY Joe collector.........LOL.........not gotten around to looking, finding or even considering those other vehicles.....

Yea, I'm THAT lazy!

Think of it as me doing other fans a favour: me not buying them means they get that much better a shot at getting one in my stead.

Nah, the HISS always struck me as a silly redundant design. All, that tank underneath, just to mount two comparatively dinky machine guns ( I'm assuming they are at least .50 cals or slightly bigger up top) in the turret. Kinda flimsy for COBRA signature tank.

The HISS II was a bit smarter looking, but it could have been better.

If Hasbro had given us a "updated HISS", with what looked like detail .50's ( for example) with a ported barrel and drilled vent ports on the sleeve, and given us detailed molded instruments inside the cockpit......I'd have jumped into bed with the thing in a heartbeat. That's been my one big beef with the 25th Ann. line today.......the figures got new detailed updated looks, but the vehicles stayed with the mostly simplistic old-style molded details. There was a missed opportunity there.

The vehicles could have been come more model-kit like and been world's cooler because of it, as the figures have many TINY parts about them, so could the vehicles has gone with some more delicate parts as well. Its a collector-aimed line after all--but somewhere along the way, the philosophy reverted to making them "just toys" again.

I have to say; I've sold most of my 25th Joes, but...in my recent second thoughts, I still kinda want the VAMP. I used to love that thing, and I never had one. My little brother did, but I didn't. Now if they make a VAMP Mark II, which I'm sure they will considering Hasbro's penchant for repaints, I WILL own one, collector status or not. (lol) I wanted one of those worse than I did the original VAMP...

Woah! Slow down.

How do you put the fins on Torpedo's backpack?

There should be a pic on the review.

Thank you

Not quite sure how they stay on, but I'm going to check that out later.

As for the vehicles, I have to agree with arrow that they were quite a supprize for quality. I had intended to get the packs just for the new figures, but it turns out that the Vehicles are actually quickly becoming favorites for the 25th display.

Now if Hasbro could get the Duke arms and quantity released problems fixed.......
