V1 Stalker breaking?

Was just reading a thread over on yojoe.com about people having mishaps with their GI Joes. One of the figures I noticed that was mentioned quite a bit was Stalker.

I won a mint/complete Stalker on ebay a few years back, and like I always do, the moment I received him, I was putting his gun in his hand to display him, and the entire top half of his hand broke off. Ironically, the thumb was still intact.

Just curious if it's common for Stalker to be so fragile, as I still haven't replaced him, and if it is common, there's no way I'm ever gonna try to put his gun in his hand again, much less bring him anywhere near a foot peg.

Another figure I've had a lot of problems with is Scrap-Iron. I've replaced his crotch three times now. :(

it's the plastic, the sun(heat) and the air are slowly turning it into crumbly brittle plastic... I remember reading a link someone posted somewhere about the discolored nintendos and such.. it could have been the type of plastic they used for Stalker, same with some of the V1 feet, they add a certain chemical into the plastic, and sometimes they don't get the mix right, maybe they didn't get a whole run of Stalkers right, I dunno.. I'll see if I can find that link on the Nintendos, it was a good read.

to this day, I have NEVER had a thumb break on me. NEVER... and I even used to bite my figures hands to make them close tighter!

I have had probably 10 crotches break, but those were when I was a kid, none since I have been an adult collector.

And I was never very careful with my Joes either.. I used to throw them all in a box together... Then I put them all in sandwhich bags with their gear and put them in a big box together... and finally I put them each in those little plastic bubbles.

The only breakage issue I have had as an adult collector are the elbows at the pins.. they get little cracks sometimes. I have seen this about 15 times..

but hey, outta hundreds and hundreds of figures, I just dont see all the breakage everybody talks about... maybe its because I live in Cali or something.. I dont know.

I'd purchased a v1 Stalker through the mail, and both his thighs were shattered when I opened the package (I'm sure most likely due to the post office).

My very first V1 Stalker's thumbs broke off. I think alot of that has to do with his gun. The handle looks a little bigger than alot of the other guys like Grunt and R&R. Stalker was one of my first ten figures and around the second or third to break. I've wondered if the problem with Stalker was that he had his hands painted. Did the paint soften the plastic?

I have replaced him since then but never dared to put a gun in his hand and it is still ok.

I am one of the ones that has problems with Trip-Wire. I have had three crotches break. Two regulars and one Tiger Force.

Also I have gone through 5 Maurader Spirits. Thumbs broke on all of them, both hands.

Three figures have broke at the shoulder. v1 Cobra Commander, v1 Zap and a v1 Cobra Officer. These all broke within 3 years of getting them when I played with them alot. I have never been able to find out what made the shoulders break other than over playing with them.

I have never had a thigh break.

These days I try to not even touch my old figures.

I think this was a very common problem with Maurader Spirit.

I got him for Christmas as a kid, and within a week, both of his thumbs had broke. That was when the plastic was still "new". This was the only figure I ever broke the thumbs on when I was younger.

Quite a few of the Maurader Spirits I see online and on ebay have broken thumbs as well.

Wonder if whatever caused the problems with Maurader Spirit are the same things that caused the problem with V1 Stalker?

I've had the same exact break happen to me about a year ago with a Stalker I won on Ebay. I was actually removing his gun when it happened. It's funny to be a vintage GI Joe collector. Not only do we pay for the actual figures, vehicles, and accessories, but also the cost of maintaining the toys when pieces break.

Are we talking about swivel-arm or straight-arm here? Straight-arms in general seem to have this problem, especially Zap.

I haven't had a problem with any of my figures so far, but some of these have been treated roughly in the past. Lots of "grip action" (for lack of a better term) could result in this, obviously. Quite a few of my figures from childhood probably would have ended up this way - I only had about three with broken thumbs though. Figures with sun damage seem quite a bit more brittle crumbly than others, I imagine those stored in very cold areas would be the same way.

Mine is a swivel-arm Stalker.

The reason the SM's are brittle is, they were made in Argentina by the Argentina Joe manufacter for Hasbro, this slightly down graded palstic.

"SM's"?

Slaughter's Marauders

Python Patrol vehicles were made in Brazil also.

I never knew that.

It's cool to find out new things about old stuff.
