1st. Being Gay isn't a "quirk".

2nd. If someone's heretofore unrevealed orientation is cause for your disgust with that character, you are the worst kind of 'phobe. Electro is a thief, murderer and criminal, but you're okay with that. It's that he like other men you take umbrage with? What ev.

3rd. Why are we talking about a Marvel COMICS Villain's preferences in a DC TOYS section?

To which I'd say that depends on your definition of 'quirk'. I was applying it so broadly that it really could have covered anything, including gender, race, religion, and yes, orientation (which is somewhat ironically a word I have issues with).

That being said, my intention was not to offend anyone, which I feel is evident in the statement I made. We can quibble over semantics, but the point remains.

Which is, effectively, my point, but without the accusations of homophobia. My goal was to make anyone that was in that boat think about why it was an issue to them, not to put them on the defensive, as calling names tends to do.

3rd. Why are we talking about a Marvel COMICS Villain's preferences in a DC TOYS section?

Because getting off topic is what Tiggers do best?

Seriously though, it's pretty obvious from the things I've said in this thread that I'm interested in the sociology displayed in comic books, so when I saw a social topic being touched on, I got a little carried away. I'll try to refrain from it so that this can get back on the original topic... although if anyone wants to start a thread discussing some of the off-topic things brought up here, I'd be happy to join a new thread (PM and link me) or converse over PMs. I'd start a thread or something myself, but I could very well be the only person on the board who finds this sort of topic interesting, so I'd rather just throw out my willingness to join in than start a thread that's DOA.

My misgivings weren't directed at you. I can tell that you were saying pretty much the same thing. Other than the quirk thing. I wouldn't say race or genders qualify as "quirks" either, or religion ( except Scientology)...

GAAH. Now I'M straying from the topic.

DC! Whooo!!

It would be really interesting to see how they would immortalize Phantasm as an action figure.

First off I understand all of this is fantasy, but I have an idea of a character and YES making them GAY does ruin the idea for me. I personally do not want it part of my comic based world, its me and its what I prefer.

Now, when you say Phantasm, do you mean the villian from the Batman movie who turned out to be a woman?

Well, I guess we have to agree to disagree. To me, having all the characters in a cast of thousands be straight, white, male, Christian, etc is so ridiculously unrealistic that it goes well beyond suspension of disbelief (excepting certain excellently-done works like Y The Last Man, where it forms the primary plot). I think that fictional characters should be just as varied as real people are. However, I'm against the characters who are defined almost exclusively by their traits- having a character whose whole raison d'être is to be gay, black, female, Muslim, etc is equally ridiculous and unrealistic to me, even for a comic book. Unfortunately, the 'token' characters are a lot easier to find than the ones who simply have these characteristics integrated as part of the overall whole.

Again, I can see the objection to my use of the word... but that's really a matter of semantics.

It would be really interesting to see how they would immortalize Phantasm as an action figure.

Basic body, cast transparently, with painted gloves/head and soft goods cape?

If I were making him, that's my first thought... I think it'd work pretty well, too.

PreCrisis Superboy ---- hell yeah but this one i doubt, probably get pre crisis supergirl first

Rampage ---I would love a Rampage, now that we have Mongul we need his look a like

Black Vulcan --- I was thinking of adding Vulcan to my list, he is so long overdue its a shame, I don't know if there are rights issues but we need one.

Lady Quark --- she looks cool, i would want her but like you said i doubt they would make her

Monitor w/AntiMonitor running change -- this is a must but without a running change, have them each separate in various waves, i believe they aren't long shots

Blue Beetle/Ted Kord --- Now with a new Beetle he may get pushed back

Balent Catwoman ?

Robin/Dick Grayson (yes, in the shorts) --- lol, they gave us classic Batman, then Robin would be appropiate

PreCrisis Supergirl --- Again i agree, possible 50/50 chance on her

Anyone remember the series that led into the Teen Titans? YOUNG JUSTICE!

We need Secret!

We need Arrowette!

We need Impulse!

We Need their bestest villain ever! Mightily Endowed! She could even be a build a figure! (Insert your own joke as to what parts are packaged separately here)

1)Manhunter (Mark Shaw)- I would be a Mattel fan for life if they would make Manhunter (Mark Shaw);and I think the character design is cool enough to sell to collectors not familar with Shaw.

2)The Wonder Twins-A two pack exclusive that would sell like crazy to all the old school fans and nostalgia buffs

3)Hitman-Could be worthy of convention exclusive. Hitman's still got a strong cult following

4)BAF Apache Chief- I think AC would be a nice draw as a BAF

5)Wild Dog- Absolutly no shot of ever being made, but I still like the character design

WTF? This got away from being long shot figures and went into every fan boy's dream list.

How the eff is Hawkman a long shot? And Blue Beetle or Mary Marvel? Or Kilowog?

We got a Demon, an Orion, and even a freakin Silver Age Amazo coming! Dang, Dawg! If anything is off the 4H table, it's got to be real out there. You can't just say "Hey! What's a long shot?" and tho go "Duhh...the Joker?" Dude! Please! Give EvilStar an effing break!

Fastball and Crowbar with a Black Mass BAF? Now you're talking LONG SHOT!!

For me:

BAF sized Giganta-she may not be as obscure as someone like doll man, but a baf figure is, considerin how Mattel doesn't make any figures over 9 inches unless they are an exclusive.

the black haired supergirl

phantasm

oracle

Purple suit Luthor he is apopular character, but him in his purple 70s outfit seems less likely to be made considerin how the kryptonite armor is when the billionire goes in battle.

Toyman Not sure if he is a longshot, but like the guy above, I want to recreate the legion of doom!

Catman-he looks cool, but might be a bit obscure

phantom lady- the one who died by deathstroke was fiiiine with that revleaing outfit.

What's the difference between Scientology and any other mainstream religion?, they both believe in some crazy crap, the only difference is that one is newer than the others.

doesn't mean it carries less weight IMHO, if you're gonna believe one set of crazy beliefs, then another that's just as crazy should also be acceptable.

... it seemed very forced making him gay which is all the rage now Batwoman/Electro....

WTF??? Electro's gay??? Marvel's E-Boy??? GET OUTT!!!! NO EFFING WAY!!! Since when? I call BS on this!

No, he's bi. Link- click the picture to see it at a more readable size.

Frankly, I think it was meant to be a funny throwaway gag rather than an 'outing'. And it was in Marvel Knights Spider-Man, which I question as far as canon goes.

Either way its not my thing and it ruins the character for me, Electro was a favorite but now I just don't know.

He's also boinking a chubby Russian (I think) shapeshifter. Did anything about that ruin him for you?

Honestly now, regardless of how canon it is, that means so little to who the character is- barring writers who like to make that sort of thing the focal point of a character, which I'll grant can be pretty annoying. It also changes nothing about any story you've ever liked with that character in it. With thousands of villains and heroes running around with millions of quirks... this is one that you choose to be bothered by?

Sorry, but I'm just not seeing where this is shaking your world.

l concur with magic8ball. comicbooks are gettin better and are now slowly accepting minorities other than ppl with same sex prefernces and african americans as superheroes.

Back then and maybe even recently, most of the villians were minorities who's enemy was a caucassian superhero back in the 50s'-70s'. If anyone doesn't believe that is a stereotype, you are most likely ignorant. For instance, black manta was an african american villian and his original goal was to take over atlantis so that he can make it into all black utopia. Even the mandarian, who is half asian, wanted to take over the world.

nowdays, minority characters like mr. terrific are positive in which they defy the negative stereotype of race that was present in comics decades ago. I would rather have a gay character like Northstar (sorry, I can't think of any gay dc superheroes other than jerico) than having an over the top homosexual villian who hates straight ppl and wants to make the new world nothin but gay ppl.

Nowdays, things are gettin a bit better, though I wish the comic industry stop following hollywood. I mean, in terms of "quirk" or what's "hot," a recent one has been the introduction of asian female characters, who are usually the love interest of caucassian superheroes. This is a popular, yet stereotypical device used in hollywood and I hope it stops in that it doesn't limit in having the caucassian hero the only one who is dating the asian heroine, but rather an african american, hispanic american, or an asian american male hero.

However, I think there will be change where more asian american male positive superheroes will be accepted. The Atom is a cool start and I am quite happy he doesn't follow the asexual stereotype that asian men are depicted in hollywood. I mean, isn't Giganta into him. Hopefully, more minorities like the current Atom is made by DC.

I think the other differences between scientalogy is how the religion denounces things certain pratices in medicine and that the notion that it was made because of a bet. Sure, we don't know if the other religions are made like that, but another reason ppl hate it is because of Southpark. The thing is that Southpark made fun of all religions, including Catholism (which is my belief) but once it makes fun of scientalogy, all hell breaks loose to the point that one of the scientalogy cast members quit, which a lot of ppl found to be hypocritical in why Isacc Hayes left.
