Does Hasbro keep prototype models of figures

I'm sure the prototypes are somewhere and that more than likely are in the property of the company or possibly the scuplture. It been stated several times that Jesse has the only prototypre of the variant walmart wave Havok figure on his desk. I would be really surprised to see them pop up for sale somewhere but I've seen it happen at times.

I thought things like that were usually destroyed

Not always.

The prototypes have some artistic or historical value, and some are archived, and some I believe are sold or donated to parties for charity purposes. Some are just given away to staff and some see exploitation on the secondary markets ( re: stolen).

It depends on what the prototypes were used for mostly--mostly they are made to give people an idea of what the product looks like and measurements for pantographing the toys prior to tooling for the molds.

I have some Action Man prototypes that I rescued (with permission) from an animation studio--and they were pretty trashed.

Quite a few protos are VERY fragile and do not stand up well to any kind of abuse. The stuff I have are resin and foamcore items and they are very breakable.

Yeah, they keep them.

In a bullet-proof glass cabinet in the middle of a super high-tech secure unit 15 storeys below the ground in the middle of New Mexico, where the guards on patrol have alsatians bigger than a teenager and definitely subscribe to the "shoot first, ask questions later" ideology.

Go fetch, kid!

LOL

It's not uncommon for many toys to be sculpted or test-produced as a '2-up', or roughly double the height that the figure is intended to be. When it's produced, they shrink it down (often adding additional articulation, action features, and such if necessary).

Of note, the Four Horsemen and the 90s Toy Biz stuff mostly utilized 2-ups. This means that yes, the 10 or 12" figures that populate places like KB or TRU are not the 5 or 6" figure 'blown up,' but simply a cast of the prototype at it's original size.

For reasons that should be obvious, 2-ups are considered VERY collectible. I remember in the 90s when some auction house took out a full-page add in Wizard. They had managed to secure somewhere around 100 2-ups and were selling them off at prices from $100-300 (and more, I think), depending on the popularity of the character and sculpt. I also remember the unproduced wave 5 of Iron Man having several sets of 5" prototypes, which routinely went for $200+ each back in the day.

I'm pretty sure none of this applies to ML, but the point is that it's not impossible to get your hands on prototypes, and they are not always destroyed. I'm not sure how likely it would be to get them as a private collector, and I'm sure it would cost you quite a bit, but there is a possibility.

I'm sure toy companies do keep the prototypes but they won't sell it. Sometimes prototypes to however get sneaked out and are sold in Hong Kong and CHina Mainland auction sites.

As for Icons 4&5, Yellow DareDevil and Night Crawler did got leaked and were found by a few collectors in Hong Kong. The products were done and it got a lot of puzzled as why did Hasbro gave up a line (as rumored) that was finished.
