Who collects Tonner dolls?

And why?

They don't seem to be made for the average male collector...except they do seem to be made for the average male collector since they are superheroes.

Unless they're made for female collectors. But, how many female collectors collect superheroes?

The only people I see collecting these are females who watch man-on-man anime, who also like superheroes.

I'm just sick of seeing these dolls in Toyfare and other toy magazines and sites as if they're the coolest thing since Marvel Legends.

I prefer the much more realistic and manlier 13 inch "dolls" from DC Direct...especially the yummy Power Girl.

I think they're made mainly for a female doll collectors. I actually bought one recently as a gift. Tonner produces only a few superhero dolls and they do have more of a barbie look. I figure they made the likes of Aquaman, Batman and Supes more for variety's sake. The Joker's pretty nice. Captures the classic look well enough.

They are pretty pricey. I havent picked up a toy magazine in a while so im not aware of Tonner's heavy exposure. I'm all for different interpretations of our heroes. Tonner's arent my thing either but i'm sure a lot love 'em.

I own the Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batgirl dolls by Tonner. Why? Because I wanted to add them to my collection. They are of very high quality and you really can't fairly compare them to the 13" DCD offerings (which I also buy) as they are a different scale.

I collect the Tonner dolls. I collect (almost) all versions of any DC character. I love DC Comics. I love the heroes. I collect action figures, I collect mini-mates, I collect dolls. And, yes, that includes the Barbie dolls of WW, Poison Ivy, Supergirl, Batgirl and Catwoman, the DC Direct 13" dolls and the Tonner 16" dolls. I like the Tonner dolls' size, the use of highly detailed fabric costumes and the variety of characters.

Robert Tonner is a fan of DC comics. Did you know he was the first to make Lois Lane in a figure form? He made a porcelain Superman and Lois set before anyone else had ever made a Lois. They are very hard to get a hold of and they are taller than the current Tonner dolls (19").

BTW, one DC line I will not be collecting is the Anime girls. I'm not a huge Anime fan and I don't like the re-imagined look of the characters. I'm happy for the people who want them and support their desire to buy these figures.

I share my passion of superheroes with my daughters. They enjoy looking at my collection of DC Direct 13" figures. I have never seen a Tonner doll up close, but they look great from the pictures. My daughters want me to add these dolls to my collection. I simply cannot collect them due to costs. That being said, Ebay offers some great deals.

For the sake of consistency, I am sticking to DC Direct. That being said, I love to see different takes of DC heroes. I would love to see a Tonner version of Power Girl and Green Lantern.

Odd that people would think they are being made more for female collectors because they are doll like!!!

It's just a different style...much like Japanese anime versions of stuff...people either like it or they don't.

But I highly doubt the idea was to give female collectors specifically something interesting....but to give all collectors something interesting & different.

I don't know if I'll buy them, but I do like the style. More than anime looking versions anyway! @loll@

I have it on good authority that Green Lantern is one of Robert Tonner's favorite characters. I'm willing to bet he'd LOVE to make a GL TCF (Tonner Character Figure--the company is very careful to NOT call them dolls, even though that's what we may call them).

Tonner is a small American company . Robert himself sculpts all the heads and personally inspects his product. When the pieces arrive back from the manufacturer, the Tonner staff (only about 30 people) spot checks the product to make sure there are no defects. If there are, they send everything back. They'd rather trash their inventory than put out something that doesn't meet their standards. Yes, the cost of their dolls/TCFs may be high, but they are concerned about making a quality product. There's another reason I collect their DC Stars line.
