I don't mean to brag or anything but I just had to share my story. when I first started collecting ML i would spend more than 20 on common figures so i posted a thread about it not too long ago and some of the reply's i got where "dont spend more than 20 bucks" or "LOOK for good deals, dont be impulsive". And I'm so glad i listened. here's the deal i got and i only spent 39.20.

super skrull (loose FF)

war machine (boxed Toybiz ML)

baron von strucker (loose)

the two others werent heavy hitters:

But i got these five from the same buyer, I'll post up the picture when it comes in. woo-hoo!

A couple years ago I got a DC Direct Plastic Man variant figure for $3 (plus cheap shipping) because of the seller's typo. No one else bid on it.

Yeah, I have also learned that paying outrageous prices for figures is not neccesary I might go as high as 30 dollars if it is a really really rare figure (The MOC Super Skrull I got on Ebay) but thats my limit. Collecting is a good hobby but finding good deals or being patient for re-releases is also part of that. For example I got Hulkbuster and Thor Buster Iron Man at prices lower than 20 dollars and with the six inch Movie Iron Man waves coming out I can complete my Iron Man hall of Armor without burning a hole in my pocket which makes me really excited. Well anyway, congrats on the finds and getting them at a good deal. :D

The only good deals I got/found were:

Red Skull with damage on bubble at a flea market for $10. The guy knocked it down from $15 since there was damage. I didnt even ask, he was just like "oh...thats damaged I'll sell it for $10"

I got Bobby Drake variant for $20 buy it now back in 2006 around Dec when Bobby Drake was going for like $80+ easy.

A TNI member that I hooked up with some variants hooked me up with a Deadpool MOC for $20.

Last but not least, some comic store about 1 hour away was having a 50% off toys and figurines sale. They had a Blue Angel variant for $20 so I paid $10 lol. They also had a Scarlet Witch for $80...I guess they didn't get the memo that, that figure wasn't extremely hard to find and did in fact get shipped heavily to USA :P

But yeah look around, stay patient. Sometimes you can score sweet deals. Ebay can either be good or bad. Also I don't think this matters anymore but sometimes a figure gets popular because of a event. I remember when Modern Iron Man use to go for $40-$45 and you could get some nice figures if you had a Modern Iron Man for trade. Then after Civil War was over he is now back $15-20 range lol. Good luck and happy huntin'!
