The figure(s) that cost you some hard earned money

like I said, I'm new to this whole Marvel Legend figure collecting hobby. I've asked myself why am I spedning so much money on them anyway, but the chase for a new figure I guess is whats making me keep this hobby. Anyhow, I can't believe I've spent so much on these figures:

1. War Machine $40.00

2. Juggernaut $59.00

3. deadpool $50.00

4. Hawkeye $29.00

etc.etc.

I'm not rich at all, but spedning this much on a figure is kinda making me broke, but I can't stop collecting. Can anybody give me heads up on what figures will be hurting my wallet in the future? Sure it's expensive, but when it comes in the mail and into my collection display, it's all worth it.

......so what ML figure should I get the spending over with before it gets harder for me to find?

Hey, man............take it from me: be smart, settle down and slow down.

I went bankrupt a few years back, due in part to overspending on toy collecting.

There is nothing in this hobby that makes it worth becoming financially insolvent.

Enjoy the hobby in moderation, and search around for the better deals--cultivate patience, because that will up the enjoyment even more.

You should be able to get most of those figures for 50% of the prices you are paying.

WAR MACHINE IS RUNNING FOR 40 BUCKS?! man, that 5 dollar guy from craigslist was trying to shove it down my throat at 5 bucks, but I only collect X-Men so I passed. I could've used it for a trade. Bobby Drake will hurt you!! and that one is definitely not a future Hasbro re-release. I haven't even bought him myself. 50 bucks! yeesh. Don't buy Dark Phoenix, I would wait to see if that Icons makes it as a 6 incher.

I've spent a lot on some of the rarer figs... Absorbing Man, Destroyer, BAF Galactus, BAF Apocalypse, X2 Magneto... but then I got good deals on others like Kang and FO Sabretooth. Searching for good deals makes the hobby a lot more enjoyable, as Arrow said.

Like I've said before, it's only money. It's not like your spending it on Crystal Meth or something. Plus, if you don't open them, you have an excellent chance of re-selling them in the future to recoup some of your spending, if need be. I'm guilty of overspending myself. I'm in the process of dropping decent money for a Dragon Man. But, it's cheaper than what I would've paid for him on Ebay. Spend what you like, bro. You can always regret it later. Until then, enjoy the figures any way you wish...

Vision cost me $40.00. Giant man and Hawkeye both cost me $45.00. Now icons really get up there. $45.00 for Cap .Custom Vision icon cost me $80.00 plus shipping , but it was worth every penny. E-Bay a good way to find them. The key is to set a price your willing to spend on and if you can't find it for that wait. Soon or later you'll find someone who hard up to sell them quick. Also try some of the big toy store or wal-mart. I found 8 of me 17 variants at my wally world.4 of them on clearence.Three years ago i got series 2 hulk for $3.99.and all,but Toad from series 1 there too on clearence.This is the best time of year to find the deals as they're making room for all the new stuff.

the most i've paid for a figure was Deadpool - i got him for $40 at the Philly Wizard World.

I got my Apocalypse in a lot of loose figures on ebay. Look for things like that.

Bobby Drake (Iceman variant), Juggernaut, Dark Phoenix, X-Treme X-men Rogue long haired variant, FF Classics Super Skrull, FF Classics Kang and Dragon Man - those are all figures that, although i've been collecting since the beginning, i still don't have. I can't seem to find them for decent prices.

But ebay is your best bet. I found an FF Classics Ultimate Sue Storm loose for like $25, SMC Sandman for $15 loose....sometimes you find some good buys.

Also, at the Wizard World conventions (or any conventions in general) you can sometimes find good figure prices. I got Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch (yuck) and Sentry all MOC for $20 each one year. I try never to go over like $30 for a figure (Deadpool was the only time i went over that).

Don't ever feel like you HAVE to get a figure right then - there will always be another auction on ebay or another convention to go to where you can probably find the figure for the same price.

I set up a limit on how much I'm willing to spend on any action figure/toy. I started this after I paid 25$ each for the variant Bullseye and Green Hulk. That was the most I paid for a single ML figure and I regreted it after they became pegwarmers.

Set a limit for yourself as well. $20 is the most I'll spend on a figure on eBay! I never go to LCSs to get figures they tend to gouge on the prices...

Also do you need MOC? or are you collecting display pieces? MOC will always fetch a pretty penny. If you look at some of the lots, you'll find most of the figures you need, in good shae and for about the price of one of those you listed.

Thanks guys for your help. Everything makes a lot of sense. Yeah 20 dollars a figure should be my limit.

Can someone break down what the acronyms mean like MOC, NIB, ETC. Is there a website I can look at that breaks all the action figure terms?

MOC= Mint on card.

MOMC=Mint on Mint card

NIB= New in box.

NBRFB= Never before removed from box, or

MISB=Mint in sealed box.

There's more but post the acronyms you are unsure about and someone is bound to answer.

even though I have spent thousands on my Legends collection, I have never paid over retail for any of them... almost.

I spent 12 bucks for my ML1 Cap at a hobby show when series 3 was almost out... this is when the figures were 7 bucks each.. and they had dissappeared from the shelves between series 2 and 3... I didn't know that ML figures would become so plentiful and I didn't want to miss him.

my advice.. there are always good deals.. Just wait man. While it is a joy to have a cetain figure in your collection, it is twice as good to be able to look at him and know you got a good deal for him.

if you open your figures, you can get great buys on loose figures or MOC figures with damaged packaging.,

and yeah.. I think you paid too much for all those guys you listed.

My friend that works at the comic book store I go to has been selling me some figures for awsome deals recently. I bought the vision variant & series 2 namor for $15 and hulk buster iron man, modern iron man, war machine & hawkeye from him for $10. He is holding series 8 ult. captain america for me for $10 & series 6 cable for $15...i am picking those up in the next couple days. I found series 5 sabretooth on ebay for $9 ($17 with shipping) & series 1 captain america for $8 ($15 with shipping). I picked up moleman, silver surfer & mr. fantastic from the ronan series for $29 including shipping on ebay. So yeah, like everyone said be patient & look for the best deals. I've never spend more than $20-25 for a single figure. I would love a Juggernaut or Deadpool or Dragonman or Kang someday, but i refuse to pay such high prices for them.

And if you ever do run into money problems, just sell some of your figures on ebay! You can always get them back, especially the easier to find ones. Lots are great. I just bought a lot including the regular wasp & the red variant, luke cage, iron fist & falcon (all loose) for less than $15 including shipping. It was great for me because these were some figures that I recently sold. Also you can sell these easier to find figures & store up a little money in a paypal account to be able to buy the more expensive ones! Sorry this is so long!

i just recently got into getting Marvel legends (last year) again and have only picked up a few figures for large amounts.

I paid 40 for juggernaut at a convention, 30 on ebay for a deadpool and 25 for a hawkeye.

some other figures I got great deals on. this local comic shop was selling loose marvel legends from the galactus, sentinel and apocolapyse waves so got most of them for 2 dollars a piece, including War Machine (only thing missing on him was the blast effect from the missle launcher).

a few others I got in exchange for selling my friends collection on ebay. was able to get the FFC super skrull figure, Modern Armor Ironman and Galactus plus a few others.

20 dollars is my limit on Ebay too.

I've never spent more for a figure yet. I don't have many ML figures, I only buy what I really like. Guess I was lucky with my McFarlane Spidey. I spent around 10 $ for it, but it was a loose figure, and it turned out that his hip joint is a bit loose.

But it's okay. I'm glad I didn't spend more for it.
