Zartan's Facial...Errr...Markings?

Has there ever been a clear answer from cartoons or comics on what Zartan's facial "markings" are? Is it a mask? Is it warpaint? Is it a tattoo?

I've also thought of it as a mask (half-mask?), not sure how it was stay on though.

I think it was originally supposed to be face paint. I feel that Zartan was loosely based on Alice Cooper. However i now like to think of it as a tattoo.

In the Marvel comics, they drew it like face paint, in the vein of a Wrestler (Ultimate Warrior, anyone?). In the DDP comics, it definitely looks more like a mask.

 

I always rationalized it as part of Zartan's holographic get-up. A flat, featureless base onto which he could project images. Doesn't make bunches of sense, but it's more believable than him wearing a mask, and still being able to change from person to person in seconds.

That's what I always thought, Alice Cooper/Kiss Style. Although nowadays I'm thinking he went the tattoo route, you know he is the hardcore Dreadnok biker.

hehe, no doubt Zartan was hardcore and manly, unlike the really hilarious subject title , hence the "Err.." funny one Ironbiter!!

After finally finding a 25th Zartan this weekend, I have closely examined the figure and found that beneath the black markings are...EYEBROWS! So it's definitely not a mask. It's either paint or a tattoo. I'm going with tattoo, as facial paint annoys me.
