Paramount Nixes Blu-Ray, Goes HD-DVD w/ ''Transformers,'' Others

Paramount Pictures announced today that they will exclusively support the HD-DVD format in the next-generation DVD format war. In a joint press release with Dreamworks Animation SKG, the spun-off animation division of Paramount-owned Dreamworks SKG, the studios announced their deal that will start with "Blades of Glory" on August 28th and follow with "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third". I don't believe that crap for a second. Paramount has been supporting Bluray since its inception, so why would they change sides now. This article goes against everything they have been doing.

Players for both formats cost too much for casual viewing anyway. Even considering the PS3 also plays games it's still a ripoff. Several hundred to see movies in a slightly higher resolution...

Yeah money talks it looks like. I'm bummed I was looking foward to watching this on Blu-Ray. Oh well at least PS3 ups the resolution of standard DVDs.

 

Consider this, and I would never condone such things mind you. Writable BD is coming soon. HD DVD is supposedly easier to crack. Paramount may have just kissed 2/3 of the HD market good-bye in favor of creating, a "if we want a BD Paramount movie, will just make our own" situation. Bravo Paramount.

:) As long as they release it on the normal DVD, I couldn't careless which exclusive right they want to give it to whether HD or Blu Ray. But from reading at different board, I get the impression that they'll release only HD format. If that's the case, I'll be damn!

 

Seriously, can HD DVD or Blu Ray player read the standard DVD disc? I got ton of standard DVD discs, otherwise I'm screw if they're planning to get rid of the standard DVD/ player. Darn it, the VHS last over 20 years while the standard DVD is having a hard time surviving a decade.

Yes I was thinking the very same thing, quite lame really they need to milk the dvd for at least another 10 years I duno anything about any of this cra* but I don't see how one can be just so much better than the other either .... no matter what it still plays on the same tv

they DO play on regular TV's, but when you put HD-DVD or Blu-Ray on an HDTV, it supposively looks better

 

I've been to futureshop lots and looked at those TVs with HD_DVD players hooked up, it doesn't look any better to me, it actually looked quite a bit worse.. like it was pixally, like someone cranked up the sharpness way too much

 

 

If you want realistic, look around, things aren't sharp and super focused in real life, regular DVD's are perfect

Well I have held off on getting either a HD or Blue-Ray player for this very reason. I remember back when VHS and Beta Max tapes first came out, and remember how a lot of people ended up wasting a bunch of money on Beta Max machines when the industry opted to primairly support VHS.

Gonna be a Looooooooooong time before I even think about getting an HD or Blue Ray or whatever. I have a LOT of DVDs and I've NEVER found myself thinking, "Ya know, I wish the picture was a bit sharper." $30-$40 for a movie? Ahhhhhhhhh, no.

 

Don't worry, there will be pleanty of versions of the DVD that we'll have to worry about getting.

I will not own any high def machine until there's only one format. Eventually either one of these formats win, or the companies agree to make a new unique standard format. It's like DVD Audio and Super Audio CD, neither of those was able to take out the CD. The same will happen with blue ray and HD DVD in relation to standard DVDs.

The only problem is, that by 2009, you won't be able to watch tv anymore without an HD-TV or a box that hooks up to that crap. BUt still, I'm going to wait til it all sorts out and go from there. Till then, the cheap, normal, ole' dvd for me!
