Spidey 3, Venom and Raimi

Just read this Sam Raimi interview at CBR News.

The part I'm interested in is this one:

"Was there ever a desire to extend the Venom storyline because he's such a big character in the comic?

Yes. The Venom storyline, unfortunately, has Eddie Brock and the establishment of who he is and what he is. Then symbiote coming to Peter Parker first. And then you've got to go through his entire getting of the black suit, the dark Peter, and getting rid of the black suit before it even gets to Eddie Brock. So the very nature of that story demands a two-parter if you want to spend more time with Venom, which I didn't think was very fair to the audience. I thought about it. I really did, and I kept reading the fans' e-mails that Avi would send me saying, "They'd better not introduce him just to tease us." I felt that the fans didn't want that. They want Venom, just give them Venom already. But obviously through the very nature of this movie, he's only going to be in half an act or one act. I just made it as thorough and as best I could and delivered Venom in the most complete way the fans might want. That was my desire. I was led there. "

I don't want to make this a "he should have done this or that" whiner thread, the question is this:

Would you have felt "teased" if Sam and his crew had broken the Venom Story into two parts? And then had a much more Venom-centered Spidey 4? Or do you think all things considered, Avi Arad was right and you, as a Spidey fan and moviegoer, can't wait and want your Venom now?

All replies to this thread must be in symbiote-host plural when referring to yourself. :D

I would prefer a short setup in #3 for a Venom-centered #4 any day of the week over a quick intro and defeat/death in the same movie. That is the common theme w/ the Spidey movies...the villian has to die in the end. I was hoping they would buck that trend for this one. This is the ONLY thing that has bothered me about Raimi...if he had his druthers, Venom wouldn't appear in any of the movies. But he knows that is what every Spidey-fan, Avi Arad and Sony demands so he really had no choice.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd really want it to be a two parter over a single story.

Sorry, We would like it to be a two-parter. :P

I completely agree with what they did on this movie

I HATE cliffhangers and I HATE teases

Venom was just AWESOME in this movie and Topher Grace is an amazing actor

WE would have prefered a two part storyline, leaving Venom "alive" at the end of the movie, open for a sequel. We wish we were teased, and not a bit dissappointed to see Venom the last 30 mins of the movie...

But if the excuse is good? Then hell yeah!

I think Brock is dead (unless they can come up w/ something clever)...but the symbiote itself was still there. And that's all they need...either it finds another host or they find away for Brock to live (which would be a stretch). They did sign Topher for 3 movies...for whatever it's worth.

Interesting. It is possible that Eddie and the symbiote bonded so much, that they become one, whereas both the suit protected both himself and eddie from the blast or that Eddie's mind or whatever was absorbed by the suit. They can also have it that the symbiote no longer has a host and can morph to Eddie at well or whatever

I GOT IT!!!!!!!

Venom gets his own movie starring Topher Grace. It begins with Eddie's funeral only to be brought back by...wait for it.....THE BEYONDER!!! He snaps his fingers and then tells Eddie that he, the Beyonder, was the reason for the symbiote coming to earth as one of those secret wars themed games he came up with to test the good vs evil ratio on earth. Then Venom goes up against carnage, spidey only cameos, and thus, we have a solution for our venom's death problem. Just dont make it like Elektra and it'll freakin rock!

Well, I dislike the character alot and would have put him about the bottom of a list that would have characters like the Lizard, Rhino, Vulture, Shocker and Kraven appear BEFORE we ever saw Venon, but.....

Using the Black Costume as the gimmick to propell the third movie makes sense to me, but I would have not acknowledged Venom at all this this movie, I would have saved the character for the fourth movie. Have Peter get rid of the suit in the third, intro Eddie Brock as well, but keep the symbiote and Eddie appart until the third--then go hog wild with the thing--that way you can get the whole symbiote thing going to work.

I was thinking somehow if the Symbiote could sort of regenerate Eddie's body then he could come back. The only way to stop him would be to completely finish off the symbiote so that it could never bring Eddie back. If they were going to revive the character then that's what I can imagine seeing.

At the very beginning when when there were rumors mentioning Venom and the Black suit in the next spiderman movie, it wasnt even a question for it should be a 2 part movie. As some kind of a director ourselves and a Venom fan, the only way we know for it to work is to make a 2 part movie. Spidey3 donning the black suit and Spidey4 havin Venom. the "dark spidey" and Venom story is just too much to be told in half part of the movie or in this case, less. You end up rushing things and after watching SPidey3 last nite when I saw Venom I was dissapointed to how short his time was.

I agree. If Raimi and company return for the next one I hope Avi Arad backs off and lets the man do his own thing now. If you subtract the Venom part but keep the Eddie Brock stuff up until he gets the symbiote... ah that would have been more than enough content for this flick along with everything else they had going on. The rush for Venom wasn't needed but what's done is done already. It was still immensely enjoyable despite the overload and rush job on character development.

Perhaps a Lizard/Kraven or Lizard/Vullture centered flick with some Chameleon seeds being planted for Spidey 4. I would also welcome a Venom rematch tease but that's it, leave it for later since he was just used. Oh Venom, we hardly knew ye. :P

I was really disappointed in the lack of screentime for Venom, but now that I really think about it, I bet many people would be annoyed if we just saw the symbiote attach to Brock at the very end and then had to wait 3 years to finally see him in the next movie. I don't think Raimi could have won either way, really...

Yeah, I really couldn't blaim Raimi for what happened to Venom. With what we got I guess I was pleased. Not with Brock, but Venom I was.

The design for Venom was awesome, I thought. Though I noticed that there was something different about him compared to say, the statues. Did he have bigger eyes? I know he had a little bump indicating a nose under the suit.
