If Sota goes out of business

I don't have a lot of faith in Sota anymore and seems like they could go the way of Palisades any day now, so I was just curious if that happens who would you like to see make Street Fighter figures. I kinda think Jazwares would be a good choice since they already do those Sota repaints and the MK line has really come along. Toy Biz might be another good choice.

Both Toybiz and Jazwares would be good for me. Toybiz as long as they didn't overload the figures with useless articulation, and Jazwares as long as the put the same amount of detail and care as they do with their latest batch of MK figures.

Good call. I'm sure other companies would look at SOTA's effort. And while SOTA did a fantastic job with the molds, sculpting, etc. when the figures actually came to store shelves, they just didn't sell so well at all.

I want a company who can actually sculpt anime style heads and doesn't brag a lot or make excuses why they can't mimic the heads like the Udon art style. I mean, only one guy who sculpting the heads for the SOTA sf heads and honestly, the females and normal character heads from Round 1-3 sucks ass.

The US toy makers would either make them into being McTodd-style statues or worry about articulaiton first before worring about how it looks, producing ugly figures with big joints everywhere. These two firms are very good at making well-articulated figures that are visually clean too.

i would rather have the above two make the toys. Hate to say this, but it seems to be true, that is "If they make Street Fighter toys, have it being made by an asian company." Just that the anime style is currently pretty hard to do since a lot of sculpters aren't familar with this style when learning how to sculpt. Furthermore, Sota had a hard time with this since they only have one sculpter doing all the heads and for the most part, he had trouble sculpting normal looking faces or asian characters (despite that Fei Long turned out good.)

 

This is kinda like the issues videogames had in the 80's and early 90's where game companies would hire american artist to "de-anime the characters to make it more "appealing" to us yanks by drawing them more realistically. As a result, they came out looking awkward and fugly. I see a similar thing happened to the Sota figs.

 

There is nothing wrong americanizing an anime art style as long as they do it right like not drawing them looking realistic and at the same time, making them appear attractive to the viewers.

Same here, SOTA more than any other company just gets what collectors want; figures that have a great amount of articulation and accessories to go with amazing sculpts. I can’t think of any other company that could do the figures justice.

 

There’s Hasbro and Mattel but they wouldn’t make them with as much articulation or accessories (both companies would be too scared that a child would choke on an interchangeable head or hand to include them). And while Mattel might give them a decent paint job, Hasbro sure wouldn't.

 

Toy Biz/Marvel toys are ok (I used to love them) but really the more toy lines I collect the more Marvel Legends slides down the list. To me ToyBiz was really inconsistent with too many novice sculptors and too many changes in quality from series to series due to them constantly changing factories. I could also never get my ML figures to hold an action pose, either due to rubbery plastic, small feet, or loose joints.

 

There’s smaller companies like Mezco and NECA that make some cool figures but Mezco couldn’t keep the comic Hellboy figure line alive (which makes me very sad) and while NECA is releasing a spot-on and well sculpted God of War figure (that I’ll buy when it comes out) they gave the darn thing a V-cut crotch...arrrrggggg!

 

SOTA has pretty much ruined me for other companies' figures. Next to a Street Fighter figure nothing else seems quite as much fun, as customizable or as well built. Other companies have had the SF license in the past but none of them have put out as many figures as SOTA has. SOTA has done a pretty good job, I’d like to see them continue.

well it'd really be pointless for anybody else to do them, i mean if SOTA doesn't finish the cast i can't see anybody doing it. the same people would just get remade when the next person got the license just as every other time somebody failed to complete the SF cast. i'm still sad Resauras stopped, they at least got Necro out so it showed they had some love for the freaks, i think they would've made a really kick ass Oro if given another series or 2

You know that the guy who sculpted the entire sf heads went to Toybiz a few years ago; his sculpts can be seen in some of the spiderman movie lines and the tna figures, so he might be able to do the sf line if tb picks up the license. Personally though, I wouldn't want him to sculpt another sf figure unless it is a monster-looking character. His sculpts on character heads are awlful for the majority of characters. fortunately, the other sculpter at SOTA sculpts better heads and I am happy he is now doin the heads for the revolution and preview lines. I do not know why old Sota didn't let the other sculptor do the heads before.
