The new in the comic, enough to get you back?

Yes, did you know that joe has a comic? sometimes i feel like alot of the fandom has left and is never coming back to the comic but it has really been on up swing after a terrible arc about snake eyes.

Joe Casey is now off the book with 2 issues by Mike O'Sullivan dealing with General Rey and some of the regular life of the team, followed up by the new writers run with a starting focus on Baroness.

Duke has been on a crazy solo mission for the whole ae run (pretty much the only good part about it imo action wise anyways) but he is back to lead the top-secert team again.

Sounds to me like they are trying to clean up loose ends and make cobra stronger again, and with no action figures right now, we need our joe fix from somewhere. (sigma six just doesn't cut it for me)

so i was wondering, reading? will give it another shot? given up longer ago never return?or they will have to do x to get me back?

I've got a stack of comics to read that I just haven't gotten around to reading, which includes AE and the Joe vs. Transformers stuff.

I think Devil's Due has had five years to hook Joe fans on the book, and by all accounts, they've only driven them away in droves.

Needless death, amatuer stunts, and a noted drop in quality from the Marvel era (characters are more like pawns on a chess board than 3-dimensional beings) and the plots are needlessly complex (often to serve a "punch" ending that usually fails to deliver).

Despite the bashing, I still read the book monthly, and I do think there are great moments of fun and action... every so often, a great piece of dramatic fiction (like Snake-Eyes and GIJoe Declassified, by Jerwa and Hama respectively).

Right now, America's Elite has proven itself to be an effort in futility, spending 18 issues bringing us to the same point that were were in RAH #41 (before the Red Shadows). TheCommander's on top, and Cobra's a force to be reckoned with. Destro and Zartan are on their own. GIJoe is down to a small force, and there's a mystery about General Rey.

All AE did was draw out those same concepts for almost two years, to return that same status quo, with the *promise* of some back-to-basics Joe vs Cobra stories... which the next three issues seem to not address at all.

:(

So yeah. I'd say DDP needs to make a *real* change in their story structure, and maybe that'll heal the hurt. But I suspect they'll mainitain the course, and keep what fans they have. The rest will probably only discover the better parts of DDP's series years from now, from 25 cent back-issue sales, and a morbid curiousity for what they missed.

I'm gone and won't be back. The endless restarts, the pointless re-writing of back stories and origins, the killing off of characters that had more depth and intelligence than the writers that killed them off....

GI JOE ended for me when the Marvel Run ended.

If they could have taken what Marvel had built and taken it from there instead of feeling a need to re-create the wheel, I might have ridden the roller coaster longer.

It is sad, but DDP makes me actually long for the final days of the Marvel run, that heretofore, I used to claim never existed, now they are Canon compared to this stuff.

The Special Missions comics are decent enough at times, but still lack.

I agree, I need more of the Original series reprinted in Trades.

The declassifieds had promise, but that was mostly due to the original creator having some say...

So Until then...MAKE MINE MARVEL.

I agree the best stories old and new were by Hama. Bring him back and the joe fans will follow.

I'd want Marvel to get it, if only because we'd probably get a half-way decent movie with them involved.

I don't know though - I'm just not into comics all that much anymore, so I don't think it'll interest me. I will buy the odd TPB but that's about it.

Guest DavAnthony

I think the one bonus out of the Hasbro/Marvel thing is that perhaps Marvel will start making the comics again.

Although the Special Missions Antartica was definatly a step in the right direction and the GiJoe vs Transformers have all been pretty good (just didn't care for volume 2 all that much). If they can stay on that road then I'd be curious to see if after 5 years DD can finally get on a roll with the books.

c'mon guys we all need to chill out; to me the new joe series is interesting despite what most people have said. i'll tell you why:

For starters yes duke went on some black op; that goes to show readers the kind of mission what real people go on. Cobra acted like a push over but that was a cover for something bigger, and five cobra operatives pretend to be highly trained counterterrorists going head-to-head with gi joe; and guess who prevailed---yep gi joe; joe colton leading the joes- cmon the original joe the highest ranking joe, the head honcho. oh and the mission series showing the joe reservists like gi joe special mission tokyo with jinx, budo, etc.

sure the comic could improve such as the joes co-oping with US military more often, new cobra operatives as well as old ones recurring, joe colton; sure he was a badass in 'Nam he should be a badass now.there are other things on how the comic could change if you could think of something post it.

as for the action figures; something is bound to occur all we have todo is be patient; seriously i'm not joking anymore

Good stuff man! :) I am always ready to give Hasbro a second chance... with the 3 3/4 inch line.

The comic as much as I am stuck in the past with Larry Hama I am always gonna give it a look.

Which Joe Comic series are you talking about in specific? :)

I kinda just did not read them for like 5 months but cuaght up over the holidays. I must say the last few issues seemed to be better than it has in a while. I look forward to see what happens next.

I'm with you man and even in the same boat where I pick it up monthly as well!

The recent storyline has piqued my interest with the Phoenix Guard and Cobra's undercover plans, but I have little confidence in Devil's Due to keep it going like this.

I've said this a million times in GI Joe comic threads and I'll say it again:

The GI Joe comic line should be split into "volume" maxi-series...much like Marvel's "The Ultimates"...one thing that I believe Devil's Due has done strongly is their GI Joe mini-series. They have shown (at least to me) that they are fully capable of planning out great stories if given the time to do so.

In that effort, they can get better stories, perhaps better writers and artists for each "Volume" and they can always have their "#1" issues to help pump up sales...and hopefully help redeem the series.

The 80's throwback kick wore off a while ago...and the way it's going, I'm sure the comic might be running its course real soon.
