new collector questions

Ive been a long time superhero and Star Wars collector but I recently picked up the Optimus Prime Alternator and thought it was pretty cool. Ive since picked up Mirage and Sunstreaker. Not sure if I want to jump into collecting another line but I really do like these Alterators. Is there an online checklist somewhere? Is there a good online resource that goes over the history of the all the transformer toy lines? What is the best Opitmus Prime that resembles the classic one from the 80s?

Three Storms should've been a little clearer, ahem...20th anniversary Optimus Prime is Alternator quality and looks just like he did in the 80's cartoon. MP-01 is the japanese version of that toy. Here is a checklist of all Alternators and they're japanese BT counterparts.

The japanese versions also are made w/ die cast metal on some parts.

Here is also a checklist for all TF's made over the years. Just look to the right and click the year.

Thanks guys, I went to some more stores today and picked up Tracks, Prowl, Meister and Skids. I also ordered Rollbar, Battle Ravage, Richochet from Hasbroshop.

If I want Optimus Prime with the trailer, is the MP04 the one to go with?

MP-04 is, for now, a Japanese exclusive. The cab is almost identical to Hasbro's 20th Anniversary Prime, but has chromed parts and longer smokestacks (as opposed to Hasbro's "Oh Noes! These could poke someone's eye out!"™-versions). MP-04 and MP-01 unfortunately (if you care for such things) lack the stand with soundeffects though.

If you're a Decepticon fan: MP-03 is Starscream. Opinions on if it's actually any good differ on this board as the colourscheme is slightly off and the mold has a few annoyances according to some (including myself, to be honest).
