So who else is disgusted with the look of the movie robots.

Remember, Bay's movie was supposed to please both G1 fans and new alike.

Which is frankly impossible to do. If it wasn't the robot designs, it would be casting, or toy design, or alt modes.

Hell, there are still Spider-Man fans who hate the films, X-Men fans that hate the films, even a few Batman fans who hate Begins.

Bay and co. had probably HOPED to please G1 fans, but frankly they were screwed REGARDLESS of what they chose to do, if they had adapted MTMTE, you'd have people complaining about its dated story and script.

If they used Alternators as a base, people would complain about vehicle modes

If they ommitted humans, they'd it would be a glorified CGI cartoon.

At its core, Transformers is going to be a story about a race of giant robots who come to earth and fight their war by taking vehicle disguises. That is Transformers in a nutshell.

It might not be "traditional" Transformers, but it IS Transformers.

Now that the initial shock has worn off and I'm thinking a bit more clearly about it, I have to ask if it's REALLY so bad.

I've been around on various boards for several years, and when Transtech designs began to circulate A LOT of people were foaming at the mouths for them. Even today many fans wish they would be made.

Now, this is not Transtech obviously, but the general style seems to be very similar only with the realistic alt modes as opposed to the Transtechs hybrid styles.

Another thing that people have complained about is the more recent run of cartoons that have come out. People have wanted a change from the same ol' same ol' and now we have it. At least check it out with open minds before discarding it as trash.

Just because it's a more radical direction than what we had in mind doesn't mean it will be bad. We've seen Transformers in the conventional sense for over 20 years, so why not give something different a chance? It was bound to happen sometime.

I know it's hard to let go of the hopes and expectations, it's never easy, but since when was being a Transformers fan ever easy?

Last, these are still very early and rough designs. I'm sure the final product will look a 1000x more spectacular, even more so on the big screen. So I say it's still too early for people to go getting their panties in a bunch.

I think it'll be very unlikely that this movie will tank no matter what. I don't think it's possible. Anyone who has ever thought TF's were neat or cool will see this movie. Anyone who watches it as a kid now, or remember watching it as a kid will all probably want to see it. They'll bring with them friends and families. There will be simply curious movie goers who go to see it for all the hype that I'm sure will be generated. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

This movie is a sure thing. However, while the money will pile up, that's no guarantee that people will like it. Movies can be a success and a failure at the same time....The Hulk is a perfect example. Anything can happen really, you never really know. This could end up being hailed as being a masterpiece for all we know, it's a funny world!

I'm not going to complain a lot, but I'm not digging the new designs.

Honestly I think that it would be easier to believe, in a mainstread audience way, that robots are turning into trucks and planes when they still somewhat resemble said trucks and planes when they're in robot mode. The new formers look like confetti. Like all the parts got shredded and glued back on :P

I'll see the movie no matter how much it sucks, or rocks. I didn't grow up on g1 really, more like beast wars, but I prefer g1 and can't stand the prime and starscream designs. I like the other guy's though.

I've slowly come to accept Bumblebee and Prime. It's Starscream that looks SO HORRID that I don't think anyone here thinks it looks cool or in any way be called Starscream.

On Seibertron, they want to rally us like the outcry for Cullen. Starscream shouldn't look like a monkey mech.

I'm totally against the bitchfest, but I would even have to agree with this. Starscream does deserve better than that monstrosity.

I know, the fandom seems so divided with everything. Even more now than ever. I love the new sig by the way.

This is why I hope a live action GIJoe movie is never made. :)

It was, partially. The Street Fighter movie was made under the Hasbro GI Joe Street Fighter series, not the Capcom original.

It sucked too. The acting was so bad, it made porn stars look like Oscar winners.

I want to remind people of history repeating itself...

Some fifty years ago, there was a science fiction book written, and it enjoyed mild popularity. At it's core, it was about it's main character existing in a society that has never been seen on Earth before, where one must earn the rights we take for granted today, with selfless service in the defense of those rights. The society was a bit harsh - those who refused to contribute to society were treated fairly and had very nice lives (better than those who sacrificed in the name of the society, in some cases) but did not have the right to vote or maintain political office. Much like someone who sits on the sidelines of a football game, these people could not be expected to claim victory thanks to the hardwork of the others. Additionally, the main antagonists of the film were an alien race that were discussed for no more that 10 pages of the book.

Then, a movie was made, based on this book.

Removed was all the controversial context and possible value this society posed. They hired a director who saw 'facism' in every element of authority, and portrayed the society as nazis and sheep. Instead we were given a hollow action flick, full of explosions, gore and breasts. You wouldn't know the film was based on the book, if not for the name:

Starship Troopers.

That is the fate of the Transformers movie. When you take out the history and just put out some simple, uninspired piece of Hollywood standard, this is what you get. You get an unrecognizable film that, even though you see robots and names and familiar symbols and maybe - if you're lucky - a nostalgic bit of background music here and there... this is not our Transformers. It wasn't meant to be.

I'll go see it. I'll probably enjoy it. But not for one second will I forget that this is something awkward and NOT in the same spirit as it should have been.

Much agreed Tom. And welcome back. It's good to see you posting again.

Thanks, Roddy. 'Though, I'm not what I would call 'back' just yet... I'm still in Iraq. I will however be home on the 17th of September... BE WARNED. @hmmm@

They make me cringe. I really cant put into words how crappy these things look. They look like some sort on brand thing you might find next to KOs.

I mean I dont get the point of making a TF movie then not making anyone look like they should. Not even resemble them. To me they just made a movie and wanted to cash in by using some recognizable TF names and their title. Because there is no way this is a TF movie. This is just a movie about robots that change but its far from any TFs we know.

i agree.

unfortunately, it looks like we're going to have to wait AT LEAST a decade or two before we get something that does our memories justice.

and i thought hollywood had learned their lesson by now. this kind of thing should've been stopped in the mid 90s.

I'm for one sick of all the secrecy only to have this as the final or close to final product. Those things are not Transformers. Don Murphy on his forums just insults people and the rest of them are just putting out statements like "Trust us" or "This is just a work in progress". But the'll collect a paycheck and the movie will be out of theaters in about a month, at the dollar cinema for 2 and the dvd in about 6 months at the most.

Good analogy... By the way, for any of you wondering, Starship Troopers is an EXCELLENT book, and you should definitely check it out. It's by Robert A. Heinlein, by the way... Get thee to Amazon.com!
