A question for the GI JOE Collectors

I know on the other threads, there are many people may they be Marvel, DC, Star Wars or Transformer collectors who like to keep their toys in box, some who open and some who buy two to open and keep MOC.

 

With the new RAH stuff, are many of you on TNI opening your stuff or keeping sealed in box. Especially the vehicles.

Although if I was able to get my hands on a vintage piece MOC, I would probably leave it that way. The current stuff, though, I have no problem opening them all.

buy 2, open one and keepone keep MOC, for figures anyway. For vehicles, open them as they are meant to be played with.

Depends on what you're going to do with them. Personally, I open everything. I don't collecto for future value (even though all the modern MOC will never be worth much more than it is now) and I don't display carded stuff so I open everything. That includes vintage figs. Now, I wouldn't open any carded fig prior to about '90 unless the card was in totally beat up shape and there was no way I could sell it for more than I'd pay to get a loose, mint, complete version of the figure. In that case, I'd sell off the carded fig and buy a loose one. But, since I don't actively buy carded figs on the 2nd hand market unless they're '92+ stuff, that's not usually an issue.

I just like being able to put my Joes in all those neat little poses. You can only do so much when your Joe is looking at you from the other side of their plastic prison.

The only time I keep stuff sealed is if I want it, but don't quite have a place for it to display yet. That's only happened a couple of times, though...

The 0NLY reason a lot of my stuff is still MOC is because I'm going to be moving SOMETIME in the near future and because I don't have any room for it open...yet.

I've kept several of the DTC figures MOC, but opened most of them.

Open them! Keeping them MOC takes up way too much space. Plus it's fun to display them.

I will only open those carded figures that are on beat-up cards. If the packaging is prestine I keep it sealed!!

Well, here's the thing... through many eBay lots...I have won a lot of vehicles loose. And man, they take up space. The vintage figures are cool and can be easily stored but now space is becoming a major concern and I have the vehicles from RAH and Valor vs. Venom and GI Joe vs. Cobra still MOC.

 

My hesitation is because I had a few vehicles with their boxes and everything else that I opened and I regret that I discarded the boxes (But yet kept the decals, instruction booklet, catalog, etc.).

 

Also, some vehicles that I had extra, I gave to my son but I cringe when he snaps off things for the vehicles. Sure, I have extra of these old vehicles but if I did open them... I'm thinking would it be for display or for my son to use to play and destroy. He just turned 3 but even my Marvel Legends that were on display that I allow him to play with...the joints are no longer tight and the legs are swinging so freely....

 

I can...either keep them in box and wait `til he gets older and he could play with them or keep them all MOC like I have with many of the other stuff I have. But almost opened a few of them today but seeing him take the APC, VAMP and even the Mobat and rolling/pushing it off the dinner table and slamming to the hard floor. Not sure if I want him doing that to the ROCC or RHINO I just bought or other vehicles that I got within the past few years...

Unfortunately, too many sterelite containers (the huge ones) in the house and garage. I do have a storage that was built last year but due to the intense heat we get in the Summer, I don't know if there are any ramifications (aside if someone busts into it) there can be from that heat.

Some of the newer vehicles had the clear packaging, and where displayed somewhat inside of it, so that was a little better for MOC collectors, but I've never fancied being a MOC collector and enjoy opening and "playing" with all my toys...like a little kid, and then storing it away for a rainy day, either in storage bins, or displayed on a shelf to collect dust and be cleaned periodically.

 

I probably have more stuff NOW, still unopened though, just for space issues, but eventually will have the fun of opening it all later.

For KNDY:

 

The kid delima is a harsh one. ONe point is they are kids and these are toys, so let them play with them. But they may seem age inapropiate too. The Second point is that these are valuable and not your average toy you can pick up at Target.

 

I would let your son play with the hardier ones but keep the rest MIB until the kid grows up a little more and appreciated what the toys are.

 

My son is now 7 and he handles the ARAH stuff with ease but plays rougher with the DTC stuff. So he picks up the difference... it just took time and a lot of patience and destroyed vehicles.

 

 

As far as the other topic... I usually always open the toys. Only ones I get doubles on is certain comicpacks and I keep the second set MIB. The other reason I keep them MIB is for storage purposes for lack of space.

I havent opened a gi joe figure since 1993. But I do buy loose ones at garage sales to please my hunger in owning them loose.

Eventually I will open everything, I keep stumbling onto several sealed packs of spy troops as well as VvsV and now DTC, BUT eventually my goal is to open them and display them.
