Superman Returns 13-inch Figure

Garzo

Recommended Posts

So what are the opinions on the Superman Returns 13-Inch Figure? How does it compare, based on the pics, to the Deluxe Superman?

Does anyone know if it uses the same body?

The costume's colors appear a lot more muted, but overall, I do like it a lot. I was never crazy about the huge S on the Deluxe figure but I do like the vibrant color of that suit.

Is anyone excited about the Movie figure?

Don't fancy it as much as the comic 13" figure.

dcd Batman Begins figure didn`t look like Christian Bale, just like this Brandon Routh Supes. Let`s see how the RAH Superman turns out. Takara should make a version too.

Let`s see how the RAH Superman turns out.

From the prelim pix, it looks really skinny. Banking on the hot toys version for a decent routh likeness.

Takara should make a version too.

Hoping for an announcement soon for this.

Hi Shaun,

enjoyed your review, but from the pics I've seen, I rather like the sculpt and definitely see a resemblance to Brandon Routh. I've ordered one but I'm still waiting. From the pics, I like the DC Direct version better than the RAH or Hot Toys versions as I prefer the beefier body on Supes.

We'll see!

I like the scult and think it looks like Routh. I've been trying to decide if I should buy the bigger figures or not...so many figures so little money.

i really, really dig this supes return fig dcd put out...

i can't say for sure whether i like this version more than the comic version of supes, even though i have both, but i can tell you i love his costume! it just fits him so much better than the comic version.

props to shaun wong for his review, and i must say the fig's headsculpt does bear a resemblance to brandon routh. not spot-on, but close enough for a toy geek like me! (o:

a lot of folks say the dcd base body used for routh is too bulky, but i love it...it combines the real actor w/ the comic-based, superhero physique. brandon would have to have arnold's body type to be able to look like supes in the comics. just my two bits on that (look up arnold's and comic-supes' stats, and you'll see what i mean).

overall, i dig what dcd's done. sure, medicom and hot toys is coming out w/ their own versions, and yahoo for the folks who wanna plunk down booku-bucks to snatch them. (having said this, i myself have already plunked down a pre-order for takara's upcoming batman begins fig cuz he is just too crazy-insane kickass to pass up! *lol*)

So when does the Hot Toys one come out?

Singapore's getting it end June. Read: Hopefully I'll get it end June and can share pictures with you guys.

Hong Kong already has it on display at their Hot Toys store, as told by a friend who just came back from there. Extra accessories only include open hands.

thanks Garzo. Having had it for about a week, I see more of Routh in the sculpt. :)

Here's an idea of how it measures up to Mattel's products.

HOLY CRAP THAT'S ONE HUGE SUPERMAN!

btw I got into collecting Superman stuff and it's all thanks to you Shaun. You see, I read your review of the 13" DC Direct Superman (complete with Clark Kent outfit) and was won over by all the intricate detailing of his clothes. The way you explained him, and his poses. His accessories, the whole enchilada made me really want to get him. So I did. Furthermore I went the extra mile and preordered (get this), the 1/4 scale museum piece Superman statue. Where the Man of Steel himself is perched atop of a die-cast base, with actual cloth digs.

I actually don't know if I should thank you or get mad at you. See, I'll have some nice looking pieces but I'll also be b-r-o-k-e!

Just curious, as a Supes fanboy, are you picking up that 1/4 premium format-isque Superman or is that too much coin? He retails at 295 US. I was just curious if I was the only insane person on these boards.

Hi Elias, glad to know my review of the figure helped spur you on to collecting Supes stuff. It was basically a fanboy waxing lyrical and most of my friends told me I laid it on too thick, but hey it was and is my dream figure. What I'd personally like to see, pending likeness approval, would be a Chris Reeves and even a Dean Cain version. I draw the line at George Reeve though.

1) It's way too much moolah for me. 295US works out to about 500 Singapore $ when it gets here. That's a sizeable chunk of my paycheck.

2) I don't want to start venturing into statues.

3) My wife would give me grief from here to kingdom come.

So, yes, you are the only insane person on these boards. @haha@

Jerk. lol

You should get it, as a Superman enthusiast it's the best Superman figure out there. It's huge. The sculpt is amazing, and its made of high end materials. Aside from the articulation (or lack there of), it's a thing of beauty. Sometimes you gotta dig deep into the pocket for the things we love... and if you tell your wife of any purchases you're a bigger fool than I, and I am quite the fool sir.

With a purchase like that, how am I even gonna hide it from the missus. :D

Yeah, I know about the digging deep for the benjamins, but I'm holding out for two other items which will burn an equivalent hole.

Medicom's mail away Clark Kent

http://toynewsi.com/news.php?catid=10&itemid=9631

and Hot Toy's Superman Returns

http://testicular-fortitude.blogspot.com/2...ious.html#links

Still deliberating on Kent though. He's a mail-away exclusive so the price is gonna be phenomenal. Looks quite good though.

The Hot Toys version should arrive by July, will get some photos (and hopefully a review) out for you guys.

Okay Shaun, this is where I don't get you... Hot Toys and Medicom are extremely over priced when it comes to 12" scale figures. Just look at Sideshow's 12" figures. They are in the same scale and execute the same in quality when it comes to their figures. SS's figures also sell for about 35-50 a pop. Medicom and Hot Toys go for a 100-200 each! Infact, those two figures combined would come out to more than my 1/4 PF figure would. That Superman statue I want is the going price for 1/4 PF figures. Plus, it's museum quality. I mean, c'mon... MUSEUM quality, which means for the price of admission people can look at your prized possession, and uhhh and awe it from afar. It can be the centerpiece to your already impressive collection of all things Superman!

So I really don't get where you're coming from now... But then again as a crazy toy collector such as myself, it's understandable that one can be confused by your mentality when concerning the hobby. We're like little boys in a big man's body. See, we neglected to follow up in the development process with our bodies so we can remain loyal to the things we loved from our childhood days. I decided this is how things are, and you know what, I am truly satisified with the decisions I make.

OKAY, I AM NOT! I am like one of those crazy old ladies who have to spend their entire pension on plunking quarters into a slots machine in some casino in God knows where, rather than spending that money and time on their neglected but very lovely grandchildren! Except with me, it's collectibles! WHY?! What's wrong with me?! Why can't we be normal like everyone else?!

Why can't we just be normal like the average every day man? Buy slacks, and black socks to go with those nifty slacks. Smoke a pipe and read the newspaper like every good man does. Eat of the beef and drink of the beer. Grow hair on our chests and shake our fists at punk kids going by, because we all know they're never up to any good.

I apologize for this post. I clearly got a little carried away and off subject. Partly because I am bored and partly for my own amusement (sad, I know), but back to my original thoughts... getting a Medicom and Hot Toys Supes is gonna cause some serious damage to your wallet. Your wife will kick your butt, nonetheless when she sees those purchases. So you're just as crazy as I! Thank you, now I know I am not the only one. :D

No worries Elias. Let me explain my motivations.

Based on my calculations and the conversion rate of 1.7 Singapore Dollars to 1 US Dollar, the Premium Format statue will come to about S$500 when it reaches my sunny island city.

The price of the Hot Toys version I'm getting is confirmed at max $170. The Medicom Clark Kent, (which I am so sold on after watching SPOILER WARNING! this clip) will come to tops $300 when it arrives. Its a mail order figure so its quite the exclusive to snag. (for me at least) My main worry is what if Hot Toys does a Clark Kent as well? I'll be totally screwed.

Nope it works out to less than your PF figure.

That Superman statue I want is the going price for 1/4 PF figures. Plus, it's museum quality. I mean, c'mon... MUSEUM quality, which means for the price of admission people can look at your prized possession, and uhhh and awe it from afar. Yes I have to admit that its really tempting. I'll be getting my own place soon and hope to work on a mini gallery which the limited stuff I have. But the centrepiece of my collection would be the 13" Comic Superman which looks better everyday.

We're like little boys in a big man's body. See, we neglected to follow up in the development process with our bodies so we can remain loyal to the things we loved from our childhood days.

What's that saying again?

You don't stop playing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop playing.

I decided this is how things are, and you know what, I am truly satisified with the decisions I make.

That makes two of us.

OKAY, I AM NOT! Cos "even though we've been raised as humans, we're not one of them."

@lol@ Sorry couldn't help it! @lol@

Hey anytime man, love chatting with a fellow supes fanboy.

Your wife will kick your butt, nonetheless when she sees those purchases. So you're just as crazy as I! Thank you, now I know I am not the only one. :D

I'm hoping for the best, cos it doesn't stand out as much as the 18 inch PF statue or 30 inch Mattel toy. :D

That 30" Mattel Superman would be much better if it had 30 points of articulation and a more prominent detailed sculpt. Of course any figure at that scale would take a hit on detail on its size alone. I am actually contemplating getting it now. Hey, I've always loved Superman, and have some amazing collectibles of the guy... and if one can love those cheesy Christopher Reeves Superman movies, well one has to be a true fanboy eh? Now, I am no where near at your level when it comes to your love for the Man of Steel. But it's fun to discuss things with people who share the same interests. Do you collect anything else? From your sig it seems as though you're into a wide variety of toy franchises.

:) :) It's out already? Okay, time to hit the road and purchase one.

I have to admit, but I think the new Superman outfit have grown into me. Originally, I hated it and cant' stand it. But now that I first purchased the mattel heat version Superman returns, I really love the costume.

Onto the 13" Superman Returns, from the look of the images:

1 - I like the cape lenght and the tight neck as oppose to the regular 13 Superman (loose neck and short lenght).

2 - The sturdier material fabric sound good.

3 - The face looks okay. I see a slight resemblance of Brandon when looks from certain angle.

Anyhow, can't wait to pick up one.

Damn right! I find it more of a novelty piece on size alone.

same here. I quite hated the smaller logo, shade of maroon and the belt when I first saw the images. After the picking up the various stuff, it seems alright now.

I'll get some pictures made. And yes I collect Transformers, lots of vintage stuff. Some MIB and even MISB!

I just saw that little clip... Man I am so stoked for this movie. They use a lot of the original score from the original Reeves Superman flicks... I am impressed... but yeah, with a score like that how can you not reuse it?

Just to speak on Hot Toys' part, their items are worth every cent. If you own one of their 1/6 scale figures, then you know what I am talking about.

While Sideshow might spend most of their time on getting the face molds right (and even so they sometimes can't get it), Hot Toys wins it over for me for the sheer realism and detail that goes into their figures. While the Superman figure may not have the accessories that some of their other figures have, there is no doubt in my mind that the Hot Toys Superman will be much superior to the DC Direct deluxe version. Not only in capturing the look of Brandon Routh, but also straight down to the Superman outfit.
