2006 GI Joe Convention Update

We know that many people have been eager to find out the location for the 2006 GI Joe convention, and here is your update:

Over the last few months, we have been working with the hotel staff in a number of cities around the country trying to find the perfect blend of location and accommodations for the 2006 convention. We had narrowed it down a hotel in New Orleans, and we went there last week to do a walk through of the facilities. Everything looked good, and we were going to sign the contract this week and announce the location but.... then Hurricane Katrina struck, and everything changed.

Rest assured, there will be a GI Joe convention in 2006, but we ask that you be patient a little bit longer while we go back through our list of possible cities and finalize the arrangements. We also need to see what they are saying about the French Quarter area of NO before we totally write this property off for this year.

As soon as we have a location booked, we will let you know. HOWEVER, the dates are still the same. June 22-25, so for those of you who need to ask for time off you know when it is, we still have to finalize it (again) on where it is.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people who’s lives have been impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

As always, thanks for your support.

Brian

I hope no matter what it is not in New Orleans, even if the French Quarter is ok. It would still be a terrible convention. Nothing to do in New Orleans and I just don't want to go somewhere that was just totally destroyed. The fact that the hurricane hit there turns me off automatically to going to New Orleans at all.

But i am 90% sure it will be somewhere else. Hope its on the east coast :)

It is very sad what happened over there and I would think that it would almost be impossible for the convention to be there. Again our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone.

I am sure there are other places that we can have the con, I am actually glad that we do not know yet to keep all of the complainers at ease ;) I am sure that we will hear something in time, the question is where and when.

Well every year the club narrows it down to a few places, and they choose which one out of those (assuming the hotel agrees). So i am very sure they have a plan B or I would say a 2nd choice to have the con at.........this may be a better chance for the Con to go back to one of its previous locations because the club already has worked with the hotel and so on and im sure they dont want to wait too long to get a place.

Is New Orleans even gonna be habitable by then? Seriously. What insurance company would ever cover anything there again?

Then again, this may be a white lie to give Master collector more time. @hmmm@

I doubt this is any "white lie" N.O. was something we heard at the con this year. Thing is, the location doesn't matter, I'm not going for the location, I'm going for the con. So I don't care where it is.

People will complain no matter where it is.

I'm sad for everyone in N.O. and sorry so many people lost so much. I don't think it would even be possible to have the con there next year. I doubt everything will be up and running by then.

Honestly, I feel worse for all of the smaller surrounding towns than I do for NO. At least Orleans is getting some coverage, as compared to the surrounding areas.

In any case, there is no way that it will be up well enough for a con.

NO is getting more coverage because the situation there is so much WORSE than the other places (comparatively speaking) and it keeps getting worse all the time, not better. New Orleans has people stranded in a city underwater with no food, no shelter, and no way to get out.

I hate to seem like I'm trivializing the other areas, because I'm not, but they're not still under water. People are already returning to those areas while they're still taking people out of New Orleans (or trying to anyway) and they're not even done doing that.

I was born and raised in New Orleans. Im totally heart broken about whats happening to my home town. I lived there for 17 years, its the home of my family too. I would have loved to have the con there, but pi$$ed that the con wont be there next year. It would have been a great place to have the con. Well lets hope and pray New Orleans gets back on its feet soon, and lets hope they find a location for next years JoeCon!

Yes Indeed,

I always wanted to go to one of those mardi thingys but unfortanly that will not be happening anytime soon.

This whole event reminds me of that movie "The Day After Tommorro"

The Earth is changing. We will defintly be seeing more catastrophic natural disaters "like this one" in the future.

A-MAN, does your dislike for the GI Joe Collectors Club truly run so deep that you would accuse them of using the tragedy in the Gulf Coast as a way to buy more time to find a location for ths convention??? That is really twisted.

Just read my email. Man. I guess it's for the best. This years RTDA (Retail Tobacco Distributers Association) was held there (2 or 3 weeks before the storm). It's a cigar convention basically. Companies unveil new products and hand out freebies and stores, like ours, can order product usually at a heavy discount. My boss went and said this years was the worst show. Big downer as the city of New Orleans decided to charge the tobacco companies for teh ability to pass out free samples. Basically a company, say Monte Cristo, would have to shell out cash (probably in the hundreds of dollars) for a certificate. If you didn't have a certificate the city shut your booth down! No other city does that. The ATF were out there in force and mom and pop booths who spent big bucks in booth space to show there wares, were kicked out.

BAH!

Well, I was speaking from the perspective of in one year. If they still had the con there this summer, there would be nothing to do.

But if it was the still same ol city......not everyone likes to party
