G.i. Joe: Sgt. Savage

Y'know, just the other day I was watching the movie Saving Private Ryan, and it yet again piqued my interest in all things World War II. And afterwards I was looking at some older Joe stuff on eBay when I coincidentally came across some Sgt. Savage stuff. (I'm assuming the premise behind the line is WWII; one figure was in a D-Day cammo outfit...) Now I vaguely remember this stuff at a KB store I used to frequent between classes in college. I was only passively interested, but it was G.I. Joe, and the package art was done by the great war comic artist Joe Kubert, who also did the awesome Sgt. Rock series for DC Comics some years ago. And I thought that was cool, but I never bought any of them.

So now, some ten-plus years since Sgt. Savage appeared in stores, I find myself greatly interested in it. It's interesting to think that there may have been a precursor if you will to G.I. Joe going all the way back to World War II, and that precursor was Sgt. Savage.

Can anyone give me any info or point me to a good resource? I know of a few toys, and I know one figure even came with a twenty-two-minute animated Sgt. Savage mini-episode (?), and I know the figures clocked in at about four inches, just north of the 3-3/4" figures. So are they worth checking out, or are they yet another small, unworthy footnote in G.I. Joe's somewhat convoluted toy history?

Never mind. I just went to yojoe.com and answered my own questions. I didn't know they had a Sgt. Savage section. Very informative. (Mods, please feel free to delete this topic as it seems rather pointless now.) (lol) Sorry.

2 things you need to get from that line:

1) The fighter

2) The tank

The first one has one of the best electronic and motorized features ever seen on a toy plane and the second is the only stealth-like (ala F-117) tank (all black and straight-edged). Look for them in the web.

I wonder if it is possible to recast the Sgt Savage molds (assuming they still have them) in 3 3/4" form. Even if they don't have o-rings they would still make cool additions to any collection. Especially the bad guys.

I liked the Savage line as well and have all of it and even a small army of the troopers.

It reminded me of the great Sgt. ROCK comics (for obvious reasons) I loved as a kid and young teen, and was naturally compelled to give it a chance, although it was totally incompatible to my 3 3/4" ARAH collection, and it was limited in it's style of articulation.

I'm glad I have it. :)

Cool. Among the things I looked at, the Warhawk and the tank were two things I thought were very cool. One thing I wasn't so sure about though was the enormous-looking cannon or missle launcher on the bottom of the Warhawk; it looked awkward to me, but yojoe.com didn't have any loose pics of it, only the ones from the back of the figure cards.

But I was suprised at how detailed these things are. I guess I just never looked very closely whenever I saw them at KB. But I did like what I saw at yojoe.com. I especially liked the desert cammo Savage. Actually I liked all of them. Hmm. I may have to break down and get some of them, because I really like them now that I'm giving them a second glance.

Yeah, I always loved Kubert's gritty look on Sgt. Rock, and it's cool that some of his vision has been applied to G.I. Joe.

Aren't those old Sgt. Rock books great? Makes me wanna go buy some now... (lol)

I've been doing just that! ^_^

Local comic shop has a ton of them and even the old Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. I've been trippin' down memory lane.

I'll rummage thru my stash and get some pics of it loose and in action for ya! It's a great plane!

Actually, year before last for my dad's 56th birthday I went out and bought him some older mint comics. He used to love Sgt. Rock, Warlord, Weird War Tales, Conan the Barbarian, among others. So I bought him a mint issue of Sgt. Rock, Warlord, and a Conan the Barbarian. I did buy him one other war comic, and Joe Kubert did an awesome cover on it, but I don't remember if it was Weird War Tales or another book. Since he passed away last January, my mom let me have those books back. I was thrilled to get them for him, so they have a very special place in my collection.

So, to make a long story short, I do have at least one issue of Sgt. Rock. But yeah, I'd love to go back and get a bunch of them. And my mom used to say when she was a kid she loved Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. Ah...it's just that Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles just seemed to embody all those old great war comics, and that's very appealing to me considering my parents and my childhood.

Yes, the cannon on the Warhawk is definitely oversized, but you totally forget about it. I used to have it on display aboard the FLAGG and it didn't look out of place at all. I used to joke that my FLAGG was actually the Intrepid Museum!

I LOVE Sgt. Savage! I have an almost complete collection, and a HUGE IRON Army. I however use the figures with my Joes, explaining their size away thanks to the "Super Soldier Serum" and cybernetic implants. Heack, I even have a Sgt. Savage custom with a Visionaries head!

Too bad they never made the rest of the Screaming Eagles :(
