I Discovered A Way To Whiten Yellowed Plastic :d

well we all know plastic turns yellowed due to a chemical reaction.. either by the light rays, or oils and other means.. so I figure, if a chemical reaction turns it yellow, another chemical reaction can it back white, and I finally found one that works that doesn't destroy the plastic in turn.

 

I took a junker g1 jetfire leg I got here, and used my method of cleaning, and I almost restored it back to the same shade white as the paint. not quite, but this piece was pretty heavily yellowed as well, so its not bad

 

The plastic is still smooth and shiny too. So im pretty excited. It takes a lot of work, but it does whiten the plastic, on any color as well. The black pieces go from yellowish blackish back to solid black.

 

The only downfall is I can't get in really small area's very easily, so while I can whiten most of the surface, I can't get in the cracks unless I had some better polishing tools. but still Im gonna play around with it a bit more and get you guys some pics here soon

not yet last time I posed my plastic polishing technique, some people went out and tried it and wrecked their toys permantly I only tried this an hour ago, who knows, I might look at the piece tomorrow and it'll have fur growing on it, or it'll turn blue or something I dunno lol

 

I want to test it some more, and if I can completly whiten a whole bot without wrecking it, I might be able to make some money but most likely this will destroy any paint it touches, and stickers of course would have to replaced as well.. so I dunno

 

guys like red alert would be pointless to whiten since the hood is painted and it would just all be taken off, then there wouldn't be much point in whitening it to restore it @loll@ so yeah I wanna play with it some more

Paint is another method to restore it, but not many people are willing to paint a Jetfire.

yeah, paint works alright if you can get a good spray system going, so it doesn't build up too much and fill in the gaps. I've done a couple good paint jobs by spray can. BUt most of them don't look as well as the factory.

 

This method though, it doesn't effect anything but the color of the plastic. just removes the yellowing. pretty neat. thought if you can't get in small surfaces (which I can't) then its kinda pointless, white surface, with yellowed cracks looks kinda funny

the secret ingredient isssss..... COMET! disenfecting cleanser with chlorinol plus!

 

bleaches out stains, disenfects too!

 

Just get a sponge with the green hard side, get your piece wet, and the sponge wet, put on some comet, and start gettng that elbow grease running!

 

eventually, your yellowed plastic will start to turn white!

 

I don't know any after effects of this process though, so dont blame me if you wreck your toys It whitened my jetfire leg here. but I never tried it on anything else yet.

That's because the comet wears off the top latyer where the yellow is; it's basically the same technique as using fine modeling sandpaper to take off the top layer of plastic.

I thought you were gonna mention GooGone. A buddy of mine used it to remove the sticker residue on a minty SkyLynx. He was suprised that it also took out the yellowing. Mind you, it didnt' have much to start with.. but it made it look as good as new. Only bad thing is, it'll remove any paint aps on the figure..

I never said it was mint. It was minty as in almost mint. As in not broken or loose. The yellowing was minimal. Hardly noticeable at all. The sticker residue was because there was some slight sticker wear. He removed them all to replace them with new reprolabels.

Hmmm I am wondering if this will work on Fashion Dolls (Barbie, Integrity Toys, Tonner, etc)? Some of those doll faces once you take their factory paint off turns that nasty yellowish shade. And yes, Long Wooden Swabs are our best friend!

 

One of our more known doll Makeover artists will be trying this, if I am not mistaken--at least, I hope he does!
