Is Anyone Else Tired Of Snake Eyes Like I Am???

I don't know, when I first got into GI JOE, Snake Eyes was one of the coolest figures out there. I loved everything about it. The cartoon was great too, it had him be a great fighter, but he would get his every once in a while.

However once the comic book got to where Storm Shadow became a good guy, Snake Eyes took on this role of indestructablity!! I mean he is this supposed one man army that no trooper can kill off, and with Storm Shadow at his side, they could have taken on the entire Cobra Army and live. I think that is just too much.

Also later issues had everyone and their momma turning into Ninjas!!! I hated that so bad. I mean come on, Firefly I could possible take as a Ninja, but Zartan???? Come on now, never had he used his martial arts prowess until now, not even when he got decked by Sargeant Slaughter and got knocked the f out!!! Oh brother.

I used to think Ninjas were cool and all, but they have just been overated!!! Anyone else think too many ninjas is not so cool, especially if they are nigh indestructible!!!!

GI Joe should stick to its military roots - that is, no sci-fi, no ninjas, and certainly no freakin' samurai! A few exceptions are cool, especially when we're talking about Cobra guys, like Storm Shadow.

The whole ninja thing really is stupid when it's taken to extremes. All ninjas are are thieves and assassins - there's no mystical martial-arts mumbo jumbo about them.

Ugh - I'm with you J. This is one of the reasons I'm not into GI Joe anymore.

And yeah, there are too many versions of Snake Eyes.

All ninjas are are thieves and assassins.

Exactly!!!! First and foremost Ninjas are assassins like any other, only they have a greater skill than most assasins. However when it comes to other forms of martial arts, they are not the end all be all of the martial arts world. That is up to considerable debate.

Suffice to say to have all these good guy Ninjas is stupid as hell. I loved it when Storm Shadow was the only Ninja, he was the Cobra Ninja. In the begining Snake Eyes was a great martial artist in many forms!!

snakeyes.jpg

It wasn't until v2 came out that he was also trained by Storm Shadow's clan!!!

I say it's cool to have 2 Ninjas on opposite teams, but not to have them the end all be all of the fighting world. I can't imagine in real life one Ninja can take on an entire squadron of troops.

And Uma's Chracter from Kill Bill couldn't do it either!!!!!

I agree. I think Storm Shadow, and yes even Snake Eyes are OK as ninjas. But let it end there. Do we really need a million ninja tie ins to every character. I really don't even like Firefly being tied in. I really hate Zartan even being mentioned in the same sentence as ninjas. I especially don't need 6 packs of ninjas. A red ninja here, a black dragon ninja there. A good guy ninja, a bad guy ninja. Everyone's a ninja, ninja. Let the ninja lines end with SE and SS. And I for one don't need a new SE EVERY wave. There are so many characters who haven't seen a new update while SE has about 10 already. I just think it's getting to overkill.

i love snake eyes and storm shadow. i've collected joes since the late 80s, and i've never gotten tired of them. while i wish they wouldn't keep re-issuing the old molds of SE and SS (come on, nobody likes that 91 mold of SS, and the SE V1 mold is tired), each new mold of these guys has me drooling. wave 3 snake eyes was awesome, so was VvV wave 1 snake eyes, and VvV wave 4 storm shadow. these guys are my favorite characters, next to cobra commander.

i guess while i never liked the ninja force or the fact that everyone seems to be a ninja, i absolutely love these 2 characters and don't think i could ever tire of them.

the old molds of the characters are also amazing, for the most part. V1 SS and V2 SE are obviously classics, and 88 storm shadow is probably my favorite old figure (the one with the hood and claws). 89 SE is also a great figure, and i even like the blue snake eyes with the pink orange weapons and launching grappling hook (although i wish they were a different color).

I LOVE SE and without him my Joe love would not be anywhere near as high. And I like Ninja's too so shoot me. I totally disagree with the remark about roots. GI Joe is not pure supre realistic Military and should not ever be. That's why 84 and 85 are considered the best years as its the best mix of realistic and not so realistic. And Cobra should be even more sci fi and crazy imo.

I was always more into the military side of GI Joe. The Ninja and Sci Fi stuff never interested me or my friends for the most part.

We really never used that as a part of our Joe world. One of my friends loved using SE, though, and I actually was the one who had SS. He played with those figures all the time. We didn't make either indestructable. They usually just fought each other. The military guys were the ones who fought the major battles.

While I too prefer the more military aspects of the Joes and Cobra, the reality is that Ninjas, B.A.T.S and Mutated creatures have been and will continue to be an integral part of Gi Joe.

I agree with Draven, Cobra should be even more sci fi and crazy as well.

I like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow as well as and yeah there is a over kill on ninjas but I have never stopped liking those two characters! I just wish (just like monkey boy said) they would STOP re- releasing them in different paint apps etc. But I have to say great job HASBRO on Storm Shadow and the ninja vipers too :)

This is what they should do, they should keep all of Cobra , but get rid of the Valor Vs. Venom story line. The should have every ninja turn into a trooper , ya know, keep the names like SnakeEyes, and Jynx, and Kamakura, but have them all be trained ( except for SnakeEyes, because he knows about the military type of stuff ) by BeachHead. Have SnakeEyes nd Kamakura take their masks off, Jynz alrady took hers off. What do you think of this idea?

The main problem is that nearly ANYONE that knows martial arts anymore is considered a "ninja." I'm sure if Quick Kick were alive, he'd be one too. And Buttplug Duke is probably considered a ninja with his "nunchuk action attack."

Sure, most of them ARE "officially" ninjas, but I think they are using the term way too loosely. Storm Shadow and Kamakura ARE ninjas. Firefly and Zartan know several martial arts forms but that doesn't make them ninjas.

And I think most people prefer "Commando" Snake Eyes over "Ninja" Snake Eyes.

And, when did Beach Head become the defacto drill sergeant? Even without Sgt. Slaughter (or, heh, the Fridge), there are still other more likely (perhaps more appropriate?) people to do the job, like Leatherneck or even Rock & Roll.

Damn straight. An SAS or Delta Force Commando could kick a lame-ass 'ninja' any day off the week. I like the fact that he received ninja training, but hey, let's just keep it at that.

Ninjas own you, and you know it!

Ninjas are only cool in moderation.

Firefly as a ninja is dumb. Why, because he has a mask? Please...

A part, yes, but a SMALL part. GI Joe IS a military line, with some of these elements thrown in for good measure, BUT everything always goes to sh$t when they do too much. Like the GI Joe movie.

Damn straight! Want die-hard military realism? Theres probably a recruiter near you. Sign up with them. GI Joe is escapist fantasy and always has been from the get-go. Before Snake-Eyes was revealed as a ninja we were getting Heavy Artillery Lasers, flying submersible vehicles and SNAKE battle armor. Reality went right out the door pretty quick. And good riddance.

Though I am in favor of little to no NEW ninja characters. There are plenty of existing characters to work with. Make new figures of T'Jbang and Dojo before creating new worthless losers like Kamakura.

As for the Snake-Eye multiplicity issue, he's a popular character and its been a longstanding industry protocol that main and popular characters get multiple figures. Almost every sngle action line does it. Thats life baby, deal with it. I dont care for Duke as a character but I accept why there are so many. I simply dont buy them unless I absolutely have to. Problem solved.

Already signed up. I recommend it to anybody.

Anyway, no GI Joe is not die-hard military realism. BUT it is a military line, or at least was meant to be. Sure, like I said, it's got elements of sci-fi and "escapist fantasy" (sheesh), but at it's core, it's MILITARY, and should stick to its roots.

"GI Joe is the codename for American's daring, highly trained special mission force. It's purpose, to defend human freedom against Cobra - a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world."

There you go, the definition of Joe. #US1# @can@

Also, up until V3, all the "wierd" stuff could be ignored. Cobra-La was all but ignored after the figures stopped selling in 87. The waves that came out weren't JUST subgroups like Ninja Force, but also "regular" line guys.

As opposed to V3 where the line itself is focused on the wierd.

But look on the brightside, when we first HEARD of the V3 theme, we were afraid we'd see figures like the Manimals for the V-Troops. Luckily the V-Troops look normal enough that we can ignore the storyline if we want.

It don't get more cut and dry that what Doc Evil said.

SE is the most popular character in GI Joe. His ninja and commando training gives him the best of both worlds (as demonstrated in the Marvel books), making him appeal to a large audience. Like many others, I prefer SE as a commando... just one armed with a sword.

And like Doc said, don't blame the SE character for his popularity or Hasbro's mandatory core character roster. SE getting so many releases is almost comparable to the multitude of Duke, SS and CC releases, all of which water down each year's lineup. So really, it's the current state of the toy industry that hinders the current JvC lineup.

While I haven't kept up the comic or JvC stuff, at least the toyline isn't overrun by Ninja, nor the RAH repaints. Ninja characters are sparsely sprinkled into the RAH products, whether it be Comic 3-packs or TRUs and the like. Only recently has SS, NC and SE been in the TRU packs, to b!tch about it otherwise is a bit unfair.

And truthfully, as far as the old Marvel run (pre-NF era) is concerned, it was really everyone's favorite ninja [sS] that brought so many other ninjas into the comic book spotlight. In most of the altercations involving SS, ninjas were almost always present because the SS character almost exclusively only used ninja weapons (Issue #85, 107, 111). The byproduct of having an almost pure ninja character.

"Post-SS good guy" era usually had SE blasting baddies, as seen in issue #94, #95, #96, #104, #105, #106 (off the top of my head anyway). As for his indestructability, at least in those issues (especially 94-96), he just played the role of unconventional warfare specialist and commando (#104) with just a touch of ninja skills thrown in. Put it all together and you got to see some nifty action scenes in the pages of those books.

I'll take ninjas over over-the-top bio-engineered super soldiers and spinoffs of humanoid/insectoid hybrid species like VvV and Cobra-La (of which had limited exposure in the toyline and nonexistance in the comic, AFAIK), respectively.

If you can take VvV, ninjas should be a walk in the park.
