I Just Finished Hush, I Don't Get It

OK, this is more or less the first batman story I have ever read, but I wasn't a complete batman noob. I loved the animated series and have seen the first two movies (which are apparently the only ones worth watching) plus I knew some of the continuity from frinds, I knew about the death of Jason Todd for example, and the origins of most of the central characters. But after finishing it I really don't get it.

What really threw me was the part in arkham at the end with batman talking to the riddler, what was that about? Was hush actually the riddler? I thought hush was Thomas Elliot. And what exactly was it that hush was trying to achieve? Was he simply trying to kill batman but failed in all his attempts? If hush was Thomas Elliot, how did he know Batmans true identity?

To be honest there are too many questions to post, if someone could simply give a brief summary then it would be very helpful, I do plan on reading this again, I think part of the problem was that I was reading the issues very quickly, and leaving big gaps in between each one causing me to forget what happened in previous issues, and possibly miss details. At the moment I am very confused.

I've edited the topic to include a spoiler warning. Common courtesy and all that.

With that being said, by all means do carry on with your topic and its questions.

Cheers.

I'll try to put it in perspective for you, atleast the way I see it.

First and for most, the Riddler (like most of Batman's enemies) has to play his game. To just kill is too ordinary. His goal was to mentally tear Batman apart, then hopefully kill him.

The Riddler IS Hush, and Tommy Elliot was the "vehicle" for it. Riddler coincedently finds out that Elliot hated Bruce Wayne during his doctor visits, so Riddler, realizing who Batman was (after using the Lasserus Pit), filled Elliot in and joined up with him. Elliot had to be told because of his roll in it all.

The fact that Batman convinces Riddler that the "riddle" of his identity is worthless, and would also be in his best interest to KEEP it a secret has me alittle bothered. Oh well. It had to end somehow.

I thought Hush was an incredibly overrated story. I mean, it was an okay story, but all the hype surrounding it made it impossible to live up to the expectations. The art was pretty at least.

I think that the main reason it was hyped as it was, was because of the art. Jim Lee hasn't done 12 back to back issues like that in quite some time. Wait, was it 12? I'm sorry, I just have the graphic novel. Anyway, I think that it was a pretty decent story because it had some very nice iconic parts to it: Batman decking Superman with that kryptonite ring, Batman revealing his true identity to Catwoman, the thought that Hush may be Jason Todd, and then of course, the best of the best of Batman's rogue's gallery. I enjoyed it.
