Would You Mind It If Comics Went Back To...

Recommended Posts

The other day I was looking through some old Jim Lee Uncanny X-Men issues and even some McFarlane Amazing Spidey stuff, and I couldn't help but notice how cool their art looked on newsprint. A lot of stuff looked cool on newsprint. There's something about it. The new slick stuff takes something away.

Sometimes I much prefer newsprint... I like to read my comics in bed as I wind down at night and with the big overhead ceiling light on the glare on the glossy pages can be so bad I cant even see it... but that never happens with newsprint.

But yeah I dunno what to say about comics... they say the industry is struggling bad... so they need the prices where they are... but at the same time there are at least 10 titles Id love to collect but at 3 bucks an issue I cant afford 30 bucks a month in freaking comics..... Nope cant do it.... then on top of that I got the cost of the occasional back issue as I try to complete some of my vintage collections... it piles up FAST

I think that price has a lot less to do with paper stock than most people assume. Newspapers are are done on newsprint, yes? They don't cost a nickle anymore either. I'm sure newsprint could cut SOME cost to comics, sure, but not a lot.

The cost of comics is more due to a lack of sales. Publishers aren't moving nearly as many comics month-in and month-out, so they up the cost of the individual unit to make up the difference and still (they hope) pull in the profit they were managing back when they were selling more for less.

As for aesthetics, hey, it's no secret that I'm nostalgic when it comes to comic books. I wouldn't complain if they took a step back to the "old look". Newsprint was good enough for the better part of a century, no reason it couldn't still be now. Though modern paper stock likely makes digital art, coloring and what-not a lot easier than old newsprint would.

Believe it or not, newsprint costs MORE than the slick stuff.

It not as in demand anymore so less is made, and because of that the cost of newsprint has risen higher than slicker stock.

Strange but true.

BTW, I like the newsprint better than the new stuff for nostalgic reasons, but the better production values of computer coloured/enhanced comics need the better paper.
