Convention Sets

T.A.P.

I want to know what people think of the idea of convention sets. Personally, I don't like them because these conventions are held very far away from me, so it would cost alot just to get there, and I don't have over $200 to spend for 15 figures.

What are your thoughts/opinions on the subject of these Master Collector convention exclusive sets?

They have been great thus far.....but from what I have seen of this years I MAY be disappointed

That's what bothers me so much. The sets have been really cool, but I don't live near any of the places they have had the conventions at, and I certainly don't have $200+ to spend on the figures, which end up being some of the coolest for that year.

To me, its like this: "Hey check out these awesome and very expensive figures that you can NEVER own because you don't have several hundred dollars to spend on them and you don't live near (Florida/Virginia/California) !!!"

I know that's not the actual case, but it's just very frustrating to me, since I live in Michigan.

The best set I have ever seen from them was the 2002 Crimson Strike Team...

Came with Baroness, Tomax & Xamot and 12 Vipers... How could you go wrong?

I love the idea of convention sets. The fact that they are more expensive and harder to come by then regular joes is a strong reason why people go for them. The lower numbers and expensive prices allow for higher quality paintjobs and a chance to get figures that are either hard to come by or new and interesting takes on existing figures. It's also an investment.

I think the idea of the convention sets are pretty cool but I do agree with T.A.P. because they are too much money. I have never gone and probably never will because of the money issue. If the price was cheaper, then I would like it more, but the overall idea is pretty cool.

I like the previous years sets. I'm mad at myself for not ordering the Crimson set when I had the chance. Last year was cool except for Major Storm. He's just incredibly lame to me. So far I looks like I'll pass on this years set. I'm not a huge Dreadnok fan anymore. As a matter of fact once I heard what the theme was going to be I canceled all plans to attend.

Okay, so you don't like them because they are expensive right?? Which actually means that you do like them, but are jealous or envious of other people who can get them, therefor you don't like the sets and wish they didn't exist so that you wouldn't have to feel bad for not owning them?

Okay, I admit, the sets are pretty expensive if you are not going, but if you are attending its actually not bad because the cost pays for the entire weekend of events, minus the hotel room and food. But the cost is the same, either way, so where you live does not affect the price of the set. You can have them mailed to you if you want, and pay ALOT less than the people who are going (who have to pay for traveling expenses, rooms, food, etc.)

Also, you can obtain the figures quite easily off of ebay for decent prices, just not as a set so much. But if you wanted one of each, they are easy to get that way, especially the troopers. Last year's troop figures could be purchased for 10 bucks or less on ebay.. The single figures usually were around 20-30.

In my opinion, I am very glad the sets exist. They are usually the best GiJoe items put out for the entire year. I got a ton of stuff from last year's convention, and I love all of it. Yeah, they were pretty expensive, but it was a once in a lifetime experience, so I would do it again.

Lets face it, there are tons of things put out every year that many of us will never be able to afford, or feel is too expensive for the value. When stuff like this comes out, I still like it, but do wish I could afford it... This does not make me dislike an item, or wish it didn't exist, that would be pure jealousy and selfishness on my part. I suppose in a perfect world, nothing would be out of our budget constraints.. but we shouldn't have contempt towards things that we are not able to get...

For example, I wanted a Convention exlcuse Keldor for the MOTU line so bad.. Of course I couldn't make it, and don't want to pay 100-150 (whatever it is going for now).. But I still think it rocks, and I don't wish that it was never made..

The only dislike I have for the Convention sets is that they are the only way to get RAH reissues done in higher quality. The general release stuff is so freakin' sub-par, comparatively speaking. Just look at the [Convention] Viper's glove and boots versus the Vipers we've been getting for the last 3-4 years. What a rip!

As far as price, you can't really complain since it is a limited edition item.

Looking back at my posts, I notice that I wasn't very clear on what I was saying. I like the figures IN the convention sets, (usually) but I dislike the concept OF the convention set (meaning figures that can only be purchased at a convention/through Master Collector), because it ends up costing over $200 for a set, and you have to pay even more if you want to get the other convention items available only at the convention.

But just because I don't like the convention exclusive (concept) doesn't mean I wish it didn't exist. Let me put it this way, I like the 1994 Convention Action Pilot. It is a rare, expensive and hard to find figure, but I don't go around saying "I wish this cool looking figure didn't exist so I wouldn't not have it." I like the 2002 Strike Team set, it is VERY expensive, hard to find, and also looks cool. I don't say "Its cool, but those figures shouldn't exist because I can't afford to go to the convention and buy them." I say "those are cool figures, I wish they weren't convention exclusives so that way I could actually buy them." There is a difference. I like the figures in the convention exclusive set, but I dislike the fact that it IS a convention exclusive set.

So, to better explain what I was trying to say in my earlier posts, I like the Convention exclusives, (the actual product) but I wish they weren't convention exclusives (as in only available at a convention/through Master Collector.) I hope that clears up what I was trying to say.

The convention sets should not be seen as some scalper bait collectible nor should it be a point of anger for a fan.

The cost-average per figure is $16.00 - why so much? (even though other toy lines like Transformers pay as much as $60 per convention figure) - Because that is what it costs to get these figures produced and shipped over here in time for the convention. Period. MasterCollector isn't making a fortune doing this - they're doing this because they are just as much fans as the rest of us - if not more so. If MC can break even, and make just enough to pay for the show's expenses - they're happy.

The idea behind these figures is not to sell super rare toys, but to give the convention go-er's a nice souvenir to take home, put up on a shelf and remind them of the great weekend they had in San Francisco or Orlando that one early summer weekend.

MasterCollector takes great pride in their exclusives, and they do their best to make sure that each year's set is the very best it can be. I think if you're a fan who has planned on taking a vacation in the summer, and you're looking for a good, family oriented place to go - the G.I.Joe convention is a really good place to consider. And yes - it's expensive - but no more so than anyother summer vacation really. I do not know ANY fan that is going just to get their toys and leave. They're going there to have fun, meet friends, and enjoy their hobby. If you CAN'T make it, MC is graceious enough to allow its members to purchase the figures - because some years a cross-country trip just isn't possible.

So to get back on track and answer the question - do I like the figure sets? Darn right I do. It just goes to show what some good fans can do to bring our little community together and enjoy our hobby as friends. #US1#

Bottomline is, you want Con quality stuff released everywhere. Well, I can understand that but I gotta say, it's more Hasbro's fault for half-assing the reissues, quality-wise. Otherwise, non-Convention goers aren't left "wanting".

It's VERY cool of MC to let non-attendees pick up the set. I'll probably end up getting one of this years sets. I jusy want to see more before I commit the money. As far as going I'd like to but I want to wait and pull my "we are going to the GI Joe convention" card on my wife when the collectors set is something a little more interesting to me.

oh.. I agree with that 100% dude.

I wish the sets were released at mass retail.. then they would be easier to get, and a lot cheaper.. but the problem is, Hasbro has no clue what their fans like anymore.

You would never get these figures from Hasbro anymore... look at the difference between the Crimson Vipers and the last few repaint vipers.. the Hasbro versions have absolutely no paint detail.

The only way the convention set figures can exist, is through the exlclusive con sets, or if Hasbro would smarten up and fire their current Joe team.

and some of you are thinking, "hey I like Hasbro stuff"... yeah you buy it, but how close is it to what you would actually like to see them make?

Very well put, I like the conventions sets a lot and I think MC for putting on these conventions as well as for the exclusive figures, sure they cost a lot of money but that is what makes me work hard so that I can enjoy them. The sets are great souvenirs to take home and remember all of the good times, such as the S.F. trip last year. I was able to spend some bonding/quality time with my mother- she really enjoyed herself at the convention and heck sometimes even MORE excitted about something than I was lol. I cannot wait to see the new exclusives and meet EVERYONE there......

We had a discussion about this in another thread. I made the comment that we won't be seeing most of the "exclusives" any time soon, if at all. Sure some of them have been around, like the Viper, but there ARE exceptions to every rule. Why haven't we seen Falcon or Major Storm or the H.I.S.S. II, for example? Whichever Dreadnoks they use in the set, it will be a long time before we see them outside the convention setting.

I don't have a problem with the idea of convention exclusives. I just don't see why they have to use so many molds. It was commented in that other thread that what makes them exclusives is the paint apps applied, that we won't ever see those particular applications outside the convention. If that is the case, I could care less about those particular paint apps and it doesn't explain why they haven't reused the molds (outside the convention).

I'm not a completist in my collecting habits with G.I.Joe, so I don't really give it much thought or fuss about it, if I don't happen to get EVERYTHING!

I do think it's a shame that the RAH releases through TRU, don't get near the quality attention to paint apps, as what the convention sets do.

I won't make too much of a stink about it though, considering that we got the Night Force AND 6 pack of Cobra Troops this past year! ;)

they have used the Viper mold since the Crimson Strike team came out.. so there is a reuse... I am not sure why Hasbro doesn't use older molds more often, and why they haven't been using molds that surprise us in Convention exclusive appearances.
