Since the inception of the 3 3/4" G.I. Joe action figure line, in which individuals were created with cool code names, I have always pondered why Hasbro has never created a character that is code named "Mustang".

The reason being, as most U.S. Veterans know, "Mustang" is a slang word (used primarily in the Navy) that denotes a commissioned officer who has risen from the ranks.

Some famous Navy "Mustangs" include the likes of Roy Boehm (founder and first CO of SEAL Team Two) and Dick Marcinko (founder and first CO of SEAL Team Six).

Plus, in 1964, two of Americas greatest symbols were born. G.I. Joe and the Ford Mustang. Last year, both of these extraordinary icons celebrated their 40th anniversaries.

Having a character code named "Mustang" would be a perfect union of these two exemplary representatives of the American nation.

However, in another thread, last year, donsbabyboo brought the foreign release of the "BADGER" to my attention. It was renamed the "MUSTANG", on the box. However, the liscense plate still said "Badger".

Hasbro needs to make a character with this code name.

Can I get an AMEN ?

I can envision some of what might be written on the file card:

File Name: Ford, (first name is up in the air)

SN: 428-64-2005

Rank: Rear Admiral (Lower Half)

Grade: O-7

Place of Birth: Dearborn, Michigan

Has anybody ever thought of this?

Does anybody get what the numbers in the SN represent?

What does everybody think of this idea?

(Presently, I use CROSS HAIR (V2 Nightforce) as "MUSTANG". I going to use Shipwreck (V8) {get it? V8 ???} as "Mustang", because, Shipwreck originally had brown hair, that's the hair color he'll always have, to me. However, I now use him as "BULLITT". The File Names for MUSTANG and BULLITT are my sons code names.)

P.S.; forgive the title saying 2004. I just updated this original post when I revived this dead thread. Plus, I revived this dead thread because I truly think there is a fan base out there that wants to see a G.I. Joe character created that is code named Mustang.

Being a dyed in the wool (Ford Engine Racing Blue, of course) Mustang freak, I think that this is a missed opportunity. I know that there are a lot of BowTie boys out there, but the cross-sell would be an interesting idea. I'm sure that Ford has the name tied up in trademark hell, but it would be fun just the same. Play it up in the characters back-history about his Dad loving the "First on Race Day" thing and all that. BTW, I don't mean the current crop of wanna' be street-racer crap, I'm talking about the guys who won Trans AM in '69, and the same powertrain that beat Ferrari back in '67. I've had 3 ('68 Coupe w/ an end-production 289, '73 Coupe w/ 351 Cleveland, and '69 Fastback w/ a 350 horse 302), and I think that these cars represent a great part of Americana.

Dear God NOOOOO! This is a terrible idea. It is bad enough that I have to sort through all the idiotic car stuff in the Transformers forum. Not to mention that the character would be terribly useless and most likely quite ignorant especially if he would name himself after a car.

What everybody seems to be forgetting, or didn't read, is that "Mustang" was used to denote a commissioned officer who has risen from the ranks way before Ford used it for a car name. On the merit of its slang definition, alone, it makes it a perfect code name for a G.I. Joe character that came from the Navy. They should be able to use the word if they leave any connection to the Ford industry out.

For some reason, when trying to picture what this figure would look like in my head, all I see is a sailor, with a very big bulge in his pants, walking around, dry-humping the air. @lol@

I think you'd probably have a better chance of seeing "Colonel Bird" or "Aierdale" before you see "Mustang".

The former is a play-on-words and the latter is an actual applied nickname.

I don't think any of them make for especially snappy code-names.

  • 1 year later...

Glad to see Alyosha likes the idea.

As for trademark and copright infringements, if they leave out File Name: Ford, (first name) & SN: 428-64-2004 & Dearborn, Michigan & any other references to the Ford vehicle, and just focus on the Naval slang definition, then they shouldn't have any problems with using it as a name. Plus, there's the old WWII P-51 Mustang. Would they? Plus, Hasbro has Ford's permission to create Mustang Transformers. The whole referencing the Ford Mustang is just my idea, since, I'm a such a huge Mustang Enthusiast. They don't have to make any references to the sports car.
