Then & Now Joe Vs. Cobra

So here we are now in '04 with the Valor vs. Venom gimmick getting under way following 'Sound Attack' and 'Spytroops'...that's already two gimmicks down and a third going strong. We've had lots of good figures...lots of bad ones...but JvC has evolved along the way.

So looking back to the beginning of JvC until the present *now*,what do you all think of the figures?Do you think Hasbro has done right in making the figures more true to the 3 3/4-inch scale?Proportions better to you?Hate Action Attack?Miss Spytroops?Do you like the colors more or less? Are you often surprised by some figures when you have them in your hands than seeing images?

There's just so many questions to ask...I just wanted to see how many of you feel about how JvC has evolved throughout the years the line has been running and GI Joe has made its return.

when they went to the standard buck, I would have liked it to be the size of JvC figures, instead of RAH figures.

now we have basically three different line of figures that don't really mesh well. JvC doesn't go well with RAH, VvV doesn't go well with JvC, and VvV only go slightly okay with RAH.

RAH doesn't match well with either. if they would have continued with the larger size, atleast JvC and VvV would be identical.

I don't miss spy troops at all. Some were decent, but overall it didn't take long for that gimmick to wear out. Overall, it's still hit-or-miss with me on a figure-by-figure basis, and I still hate some, but like enough to still keep buying.

Gun you took those words right out of my mouth! well said! i like about 89% of the JvC figures and about 2% of VvV (and thats just for custom parts!)and 98% of RAH. they are three different lines of action figures! its like playing with 12'' gijoe,HEMAN, and starwars toys all at the same time??? i just cant bring myself to do it? i miss spy troops & JvC @grumpy@ first time in my adult life i was excited over (new) action figures! VvV killed that with there "standard buck" but with hasbro i pretty much knew i was gonna get the "standard F*ck" oh well win some lose some! but JvC waves 1 - 8 loved most of em'

Honestly, i miss spy troops, i loved having cobra or joes disquised as eachother, i thought that was really really cool, but in VvV there isnt to much to make the figure any funner to play with, he doesnt have cool gear to put on like spy gear......i loved spy troops the best and probably always will in JvC, wave 7 and wave 8 were the best waves so far! :)

loved em, and it seems like Spy troops came with better gear besides just spy gear :)

kinda wish Spy Troops came back or something in some form of it.....

I love Venom VS Valor. AA so far is only affecting characters that are already released (I can't remember the AA from Wave 3 at the moment.) and they are only being packed with characters that have had a recent release. I haven't bought any figures from VvsV that I haven't loved.

I really liked both JvC and SpyTroops, I didn't care too much for the goofy disguises but most of the figure were pretty awesome. At lest they were the same scale, unlike VvV (see my VvV Wave 2 thread for more details). I hope that they will fix this problem in the near future.

What happened in the beginning with JvC was somewhat of a shake-up between Hasbro and the fans...the T-Crotch was changed to the original O-Ring...molds had to be adjusted,Takara was brought in to take care of Wave 3,the first few Waves weren't all that good for JvC...I'm glad it managed to stay around after that.

I think JvC really began to blossom with Spytroops,Hasbro was finally beginning to get a grip on the figures (though not completely).I was overly pleased with most of them except for the constant repaints and lame vehicles.I didn't mind the Spytroops gear...it was a harmless gimmick that didn't affect the figure design directly like Action Attack does. The high point to me was definitely Wave 8...

With Valor vs. Venom...I see this as Hasbro's "We're ready to re-introduce GI Joe 100%"...they got their standard buck, they got vehicles now that are sparking the interest of both kids and fans/collectors,and they got their good guys vs. bad guys gimmick storyline to roll with. They're re-doing a lot of the figures to re-introduce them (like Stalker,Dusty, etc.) and I think they're doing a fairly good job at it...but they can still use some work (namely the paint schemes).I'm overall pleased with how JvC has evolved throughout the years, and while there's room for improvement,I'm looking forward to seeing what's to come.

And Hasbro....please make an urban camo JvC Firefly...thanks. ;)

The only waves that have sucked imo have been JvC wave 1 and 3. Hated almost all the figures from those. I have always loved JvC and supported it from the start...almost. lol Anyway at first VvVers smaller scale bothered me. But since they are all going to be like that and we are getting redo's on characters like Stalker who are bigger JvC scale it doesn't bother me. The paint jobs are the only thing that need work but hopefully Hasbro has gotten that message and wave 2's colors have been dulled thankfully.

If not for RAH reissues, I wouldn't even bother buying Joes at all, much less post on Joe boards.

Right now, I'm at the point where I don't even bother to check out the E-Bay prototypes pic for JvC anymore, at least not as intensely (looking at it with a magnifying glass, so to speak) as I used to.

Bascially, I've stopped caring how and where the JvC line is headed. Hopefully, there's enough fans out there that do and that will keep the line going. I hope there's enough out there to buy enough to make up for the rest of us [RAH-only fans). 'Cause I still need my reissues... ;)

Ack! Screw it!.... I had this whole paragraph about the flaws that still bother me and I just said screw it, it's not worth it the trouble (and I don't really wanted to bring down the thread). Suffice to say, I've totally lost interest in JvC by now.

You know I don't get this, I mean the differences in the figures heights between RAH, JVC and VVV are the same order sort of height differences you see every day in real humans, yet many joefans are fairly consistenly saying that it makes them incompatable?

It really doesn't make much sense.

What bothered me wasn't the height, but some of the proportions. For example...Flint's extra long legs (and ridiculously big boots),Hacker's huge chest,Shipwreck's big ol' legs,BH's legs, etc. not to mention a bunch of other mold flaws (Zartan's 'beer gut')...obvious mistakes that were made and the figures looked ridiculous cause of it.

Proportions are not a big deal to me anymore...I think Hasbro has straightened that out pretty well and I am a comic book fan...so its not like "huge, broad shoulders' bother me or anything,a lot of action figures look like they do just out of the comic books.

Also,in terms of the proportions, now some of the JvC figures actually match pretty well next to the VvV figures!Short-Neck Roadblock and Gung-Ho (both of whom I consider two of the 'biggest' Joes) look appropiately bigger,Wave 3 Snake Eyes looks great next to everyone else when before he was slightly shorter.Lady Jaye matches up with Scarlett and Baroness now (I wish Zarana did too...she's too big now I think).Just take the time to match some old JvC figures next to the VvV ones and I'm sure you'll find out that some guys that you thought were 'too short' are quite appropiate now next to the VvV figures.

I'm in the same boat. I've lost interest in the new sculpts. I gave them two years to make these figure good and they just keep spitting in my face with each wave. Even when I do see a new sculpt that I like they screw it up with the paint. When I see them in the stores and I pick them up to look at them all I see are the poor paint applications. It's like they don't care.

I feel that they went downhill big time. I real thought for a while that these figures would mature into a line that I'd love. Instead they have done the exact opposite. I'll go back to collecting the new sculpts if they ever put out a product worth my cash. If not, I'm satisfied with my classic figures and re-issues of old molds.
