Censorship In Anime

Now I can understand when its on TV, or its meant to be cut on the DVD as a censored version, but I can't STAND when the only version of an anime series is cut so bad that its missing what made some of the humour or certain action scenes and yet it still say uncut on the DVD. Anyone else notice this? Its most prevelant in Dragonball(TOS,Z,GT).

Consider yourselves fortunate on the censoring/editing of the anime stuff you do get to see.

For about ten years now a sub-genre of anime--erotica grosteque--has been imported into North America with very little--if any notice by watchdog groups. Erotica gortesque for the layman is a variation of hentai--Japansese animated pornography. The distinction being that the former contains not only sexual material, but incredibly mysoginistic and volient treatment of women characters--usually with Satanic overtones. Not fun stuff for kids, to be sure.

Its a constant surprise to me that PTA, religious groups and other conservative-agenda types haven't latched on to this stuff in a crusade against anime. To their pin-head thinking they'd call for the banning of EVERY Japanese-origin cartoon, or at least malign them enough to the ignorant parents and masses so much that the anime trend here would die out overnight.

Don't know what I'm talking about?

Scope out a lil' trilogy series called Legend of the Overfiend amongst others. One of the first of the erotica grotesque genre, its also one of the "tamer" ones--others being FAR more explicit I'm told.

It seems to me that if the Bush Administration (et al.) has a monumental problem with Janet Jackson's breast being exposed, then this kind of anime and anime fans in general have been incredibly lucky that the films have not been pick up by the censors RADAR.

IMO, its only a matter of time before someone catches wind of this stuff and......like in some of the films themselves, all Hell will break loose.

The majority of the DBZ dvds are uncut....sure, they take out the swearing and such, but all the violence, nudity, and other stuff is left in. I'm a big fan of DBZ, but ya gotta accept the fact that, at least in north america, its meant as a kids show.

And by the way, GT sucks :P

Man, anime porn sucks. That stuff is too sick! SICK! @smilepunch@ Get some live action joints, cartoon boobie is nothing special.

Actually, as far as anime porn in concerned, it's surprising that there's more uncensored stuff now than there was 10 years ago.

As far as Japanese Anime in general, do yourself a favor, get import stuff (Japanese Dialogue, English Subtitles). It's cheaper and at least you know it's unedited. Only problem is the translation and subtitling. But if you want the real deal, fan subs are probably the best. Worst case is improper casing and no periods at the end of sentences.

Some anime porn are great and some hentais are really REALLY sick. All I'm saying is not all hentai shows are bad.

Only the swearing is taking out in the US epsiodes. Still there in the Japanese episodes on the DVDs.

Sure, its there in the japanese versions on the dvds, but they edit the subs too....so its there in japanese audio only.

Not really. Check out the Andoid Saga when Vegeta is blasting the door to Dr.Gero's lab. In the dubbed version he says something like get out of the way you fools, while in the Japanese, they've got him saying get out of the way you jack@$$es,in the subtitles. So,some of it is left alone, just not all.

The US version of DBZ has different music and opening animation than the Japanese version as well as changing asian food references to American ones.

As for hentai or anime porn, I find most hentai anime to be boring, although I do like hentai manga and doujin. Yes, there's some extreme mysoginistic stuff in there but no more than in the real life Japanese porn(except the tenecles and underage girls).

HK DVDs are probably the best for getting the animation in its original form, but the subtitles are often times, a hit or miss. I mean, alot of the times it's decent, but other times, the subtitles have bad timing or there are quite a few spelling, punctuation [often times, none at all] and grammatical errors. The worst are probably the Malaysian ones. Yikes! Subtitles that make no sense whatsoever, or seconds go by in a dialogue scene and no subtitles show up.

If they were to get better translation, it would be golden. This word-for-word translation thing they doing ain't working out. Luckily, the translation scripts aren't all that hard to find (especially current stuff). It's the more obscure animations that suffer the most.

Hey I've seen it all in anime. From the kiddy show to like some of you have talked about the most disturbing pornographic anime to walk the earth.. Personally those make me sick.. But then again some hentai anime is great great stories great art great characters (like Wordsworth) They are great anime .. Just with hardecore sexual overtones.

One thing I can't stand though is censorship. I'd love to write a really long well thought out article here about why I hate it but frankly I am just not that great at expressing myself. But I will say that in the world we live in now censorship really has no meaning as any one of us can get online and through legal or ilegal means get our hands on anything we can think of. From that band ep of Pokemon to a disturbing snuff film of a Russain Soldier.

But Yes I hate censorship.. But does it really affect me? No I findout something i liked was censored I just get on here and find the uncut version simple as that.

InuYasha isn't edited at all. Fist of the North Star seems to have edited opening and background music in the dub. I suppose the only real way to get these sets as their original form is to get chinese bootlegs.

I know Inuyasha isn't edited as with much of the anime out on DVD. But I think my real rant here goes to FUNIMATION. They have ruined every series they've put out here in North America.

For example, one of my favorite quotes from Dragonball GT is said by Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta before he performs the Big Bang Kamahamaha. It roughly translates to "I will be the instrument of your destruction! Prepare to DIE!!" They changed it in the dub to something so ludacris when I watched it on Cartoon NEtwork that I'm VERY glad I watched it on a bootleg sub.

practically all anime is censored, yea, but they realize that although MORE adults watch the shows, kids DO watch them too. So they are keep them 'kiddie safe' b/c in all honesty, I dont want kids hearing some of the stuff they say and seeing the stuff they show and do! its annoying as hell but if ya dont like it, go out and get the shows subbed from Japan or on ebay or something. (Sorry.. not tryin' to sound mean! :P)

but some of the anime IS sick.. altho' InuYasha isnt so bad, its great either way!!! :D

Um, dude its porn, if your kids are watching it, then you should be concerned. If they aren't then why the hell are you harping on it. Its not like you have to see it. I'm pretty sure even the PTA, religious groups, and such know that there's a difference. Otherwise they'd be banning live action movies and TV in the same way, after all, both are originated in California for the most part. @rolleye@

Well according to John Law's book of uncommon sense.

"Remember the self-righteous being morally anointed are more concerned with imposing their own views than maintaining your rights."

And that's how it goes for all those soccer moms and protest groups and religious groups who try to claim something is evil because they don't like it and rather than let people enjoy it, in their haze of "righteous fury" they must detroy all for the "good of all"

I hate that crap.

what about kid's rights? When something is aimed at a kid, it should be safe for a kid. Trying to watch out for kids, isn't something awefull. It's not destroying anime, plenty of stuff is unedited.

It's a small price to pay. It's either edit some stuff, or have kids swearing and seeing sex all the time, which simply can not be good for them. Parents should and do moniter to an extent but they shouldn't have to watch every darn episiode of so mething before their kids should see it.

True. Kids do have rights. But I was actually thinking more along the lines of EVERYONE not being able to enjoy something simply because other people (often a small minority of self righteousness) are offended by it rather than it actually being really offensive.

Television stations can censor and cut and all that but at the end of the day no one is happy. Except the self righteous.

I know there are solutions like show the programs at a specified time put warning labels and all that with the rating system suggesting that parents must surpervise their kids and all that.

And to be honest I think that's pretty much all the TV stations or Anime Companies can do. And the unedited stuff normally isn't that serious anyway.

Kids can learn to swear and do all kinds of dumb things without watching TV. It's often up to the parents to teach the kids what is right not rely on the rest of the world to raise their children for them using the excuse that "They have no time".

I'm not mad or anything but sometimes it's just silly when one small group tries to ruin everything for everyone else by saying that it's bad or whatever simply because they can't be bothered to look at the bigger picture or that there are worse things out there.

And simply by talking and teaching their children there things can be dealt with.

Something that is aimed at kids should allow the kid to enjoy it. But I guess sometimes cultural gaps does make it a bit hard for regular folks like you and me to understand it. Nothing wrong with that. Just need time to understand.

My two cents.

but as much as maybe people like porn, it *IS* degrading (or can be) to women, it hurts families and children. I dont want to get into religion here, cuz I cant so I wont... But b/c you don't like the fact that its being censored, doesnt mean that it's wrong to censor. Some things need to be censored. If i had kids, i wouldnt let them watch some anime b/c of the sexual innuendo, the cursing, etc... That's me, yea, but I don't think, on a cartoon network (aimed FOR KIDS) that it should be allowed. It pissed adults off, ok, but there are OTHER ways to watch it... Get the DVD's, get it off ebay, call the people that make it and order it from them... Kids see and hear enough these days on TV and from their friends w/o another added thing..

ANd usually those who are considered 'self-righteous' have a reason behind their actions. It's not just to anger those around them, its not just for the sake of doing it... they actually have the best in mind (ok usually) for those around them, and the world... i'm not advocating them, I'm just saying, before you bash them, step into their shoes. It's easy to get angry if you're ignorant of their thoughts and morals behind their actions...

Oh and Shadow, sorry, I'm not trying to bash you, man... I just saw what you wrote and went onto a tangent! :P
