$5.95, What Does It Mean To You???

I was looking thru the thread about the Lee's magazine having the wave 10 pics, and I have to ask. How do you all feel about having to pay $5.95 just to see info or images about a product you already spend tons of money on? I mean if you were buying a magazine about toys you could be spending money on those toys?

I should be more specific. How would you feel if toy companies set it up so that if you want the info or images to do your research you have to go out and spend money on the magazine instead of being able to go to a news website and get the info?

Well it looks like none of you guys like those magazines. Well I'll tell you the nice thing about Toyfare, Lee's Action Figure New & Toy Review , and Tomart's Action Figure Digest. These magazines are what made me become an action figure expert, there are guides that come with two of these magazines that can help you in keeping things together. for instance weapons to paticular figures or vehicles, letting you know somethings that are sometimes not metioned online, like variations. For Toyfare ofcourse there are exclusive figures offered. AFN&TR has a better price guide then Toyfare.

I've been buying all 3 of these magazines since they came out, and they are really useful.

thats what YOJOE.com is for my friend.......I don't know what any magazine could have that could top that website. I frequently visit there.....probably one of the best fan websites out there.

As for the topic.....No, I wouldn't pay to see pics of early stuff unless it was of a figure that I was really hyped about. I buy toyfare just cause its a fun read and sometimes they have really good articles about toylines. I've actually never bought a issue of Lee's, however I have flipped through it a couple times. More for the serious collector that cares about the financial side of collecting IMO.......Toyfare is more for people who enjoy collecting toys.......not so much how much something is worth. Thats just my 2 cents........

Oh and JayC......are you hinting to something here by asking this question????

Well some people aren't always around a computer. so sometimes a book or magazine could be useful.

If a deal were struck between toy makers and toy magazines that meant that any new photos of info was through those magazines only--I'd wait until the info was a month old and get it on the 'Net.

I used to buy all the toy mags. I miss doing so infact because I like the real tangible feel of holding a magazine in my hands, and yes, oggling the stuff while on the loo ( this being the case ONLY with toy magazines thank you--and no, the pages do not suffer from adhesion afterwards)--it makes the product seem more real and closer.

I also get the time to linger with a magazine and return to it again and agian, event years later.

Tomarts and Toyfare used to be my favourite--awesome photos, and decent articles.

but...

The price tag became excessive.

In Canada, they go for about $9 to $12 a issue, depending on where you get them--and that adds up.

Now, I can get almost all the info right here, on this very site, and other sites like it.

The info is often as timely, or more so, than the magazines and a lot easier on my pocket book.

Again, if the magazines forced some kind of exclusivity deal with the toy companies and squelched ( or tried to)the proliferation of on-line toy news sources, all they would achieve is to slow down the broadcasting of said news.

The info would be global as soon as the latest issue hit the stands and was scanned into someone's machine.

I like the info on-line now--it often right at the cusp of things, or leads it.

Cannot beat that, IMO.

Sure, is sometimes having a physical magazine in hand nice? yes. Is it worth dishing out $6 for? no, in fact I think Toy Fare costs $7 plus tax now and then you only get toy news. You have to then go buy Wizard magazine if you also want news about comics. I would sometimes pick these things up or flip thru them at the store before sites like this one came along, but now I can save my money for better things. I have found that things almost always show up on the net first anyway and in the rare instances when they do show up in the magazine first its usually only by a day or so and someone almost always scans the images and posts them on the net for all to see for free. Take Marvel Legends. It was said Toy Fare magazine would be the first place to show us wave 6 of ML yet thanks to some guy who posted pics in the Marvel section we already got to see them and it didnt cost us a cent, and im sure JayC will post even better pics of them and the Joes at Toy Fair in a week or so.

I have a subscription to both ToyFare and Lee's Toy Review. ToyFare subcriptions are pretty cheap so that's why I get that. Lee's Toy Review is twice as expensive, but there are subscription offers where you can get toys (Joes or other things). I'm currently picking up Tomarts because of the Joe retrospective they're currently running. Otherwise, ToyFare and Lee's Toy Review are fine.

While it's true a lot of stuff is 'scooped' by the internet, there's nothing like having the magazine in your hands at home and flipping through the toys.
