G.i. Joe Anime

Well since a lot of G.I. Joe fans thought the Spytroops flick was a bomb what does everyone think of G.I. Joe coming back to TV as an Anime?

I'm asking this question because I've been hearing rave reviews for the new "Transformers: Energon" so I downloaded the Japanese intro to get a taste of what we all have to look forward to January 31. And from what little I saw I can already tell you this thing is a BIG improvement over both "Robots In Disguise" and "Armada". It just doesn't look like a good Transformers series, but it just genuinely looks like a good Anime series. Probably because Hasbro/Takara did something right and hired a credible Anime character designer by the name of Masaki Yamada to do most of the artwork. He's got a couple actual Anime series under his belt including the remake of Bubblegum Crisis, "BGC 2040" and another series called "Great Dangaioh", so he's the real McCoy. And from the sound of things on websites like Seibertron.com he's giving the

Transformers Anime franchise the best makeover its ever had.

So back to my question. If Transformers can get a decent Anime series why can't G.I. Joe? If Hasbro got someone good, who does actual Anime, wouldn't that be something. Of course as I said I, and I'm sure a lot of you, would want somebody who has done other Anime series we like behind the wheel. My top choices for who I'd want to see do a G.I. Joe Anime series would have to be Hajime Shimomura ("Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex"), Shukou Murase ("Gasaraki", "Gundam Wing"), Osamu Horiuchi (Full Metal Panic, Last Exile), or Yasuhiro Oshima (Geneshaft).

Now here's my next question, are there any favorite Anime artists you guys like that you think might do a good Anime adaptation of G.I. Joe?

Japanese artists can draw--no doubt about that.

Anime is a popular trend--no doubt about that either.

But GIJOE is wrong for anime right now.

I ......dislike anime. I'm a western animator trained on the ol' "stretch 'n squash" line of thinking and anime is just plain boring to me. Tried to watch Cowboy Bebop last night and turned the thing off--because it was a waste of animation. Anime often tries to be "live-action" and in doing so, wastes the whole point of animating something. If it works best as live-action, then do it as live-action, if its works best as a cartoon, then do it that way.

In the 80's GIJOE was done as a anime-derived series--because of economics.

Nowadays, the economics of starting a western-originated animated series produced in Japan are as high as a soley western produced CGI-series. Its why 2D animated series are being shopped out to Korea, Taiwan and even India to be animated for cheap.

The talent mentioned above all come with a price because they are in demand in Japan--why should they drop projects they have a interest in to work on something western-based--western cartoons being something the Japanse DON'T LIKE.

Only reason why anime is big here is because the stuff we are seeing and consuming is several years old--so its cheaper for a network to buy the series , import it and have it translated--than it is to do a series from the ground up. Its basically just popular because that's what we are being fed.

Like it or not, GIJOE will probably be either produced in CGI, or sent to Korea or India if its 2D.

But to humour you on this one: I'd like to see what Otomo Katsuhiro could do with GIJOE. I think he'd lean towards an epic scale--which is something GIJOE has never really had much of.

To me, everything about G.I. Joe should be American.

(regardless of where the actual toy figures are created)

Gotta go with the majority here...no anime for G.I.Joe. Next thing you know, they'll think the kids want the Joes to LOOK like the anime ones do, and the thought of 3 3/4" highly articulated Dragonball Z lookin' figures, just depresses the hell out of me! #yuk@#

Personally, i despise anime, i don't know why, but the only thing i have been able to stomach has been cowboy beebop, i love america and dont want the most american pastime to be turned into some bug eyed question mark toting cartoon with crappy theme songs. I mean dont get me wrong without japan we wouldn't have alot of stuff, and I personally speak japanese but anime has never done it for me and i would @puke@ puke if i saw gi joe in an anime stlye

we really need a new Joe cartoon anyway!

not enough to have the most patriotic American cartoon of all time done in Anime.

I would pack up all my toys throw them on ebay ...and never speak the word joe again.

seeing how tramsformers is primarly japanese...it works...not joe.

that just plain ##$%$#ed...and goes against any common sense.

You do understand that the original GIJOE cartoon was animated and designed mostly in Japan and is hence anime, don't you?

A lot of the Russ heath designs and model-sheets were re-done by Japanese artists for ease of Japanese animators and layout artists.

The cartoons on those Kid Rhino tapes and the mission discs are all Japanese produced shows. Sunbow did 'em all there. DIC did theirs in Korea, IIRC.

If the show was being done today, it would likely be animated in INDIA--even if it was CGI!

Haven't had a lot of exposure to anime, have you? And I don't mean the cut up shite they air on American TV.

You know . . . and everyone is probably going to think I'm a complete psycho for saying this and I'll probably get kicked off this board forever and I don't care . . . but except for a few individuals like knightbymoonlight, Man-3-Faces or a couple others it makes me really happy that all these years I've been rooting for COBRA!

"GI Joe's American so it should be done by American animators?!"

What are you a bunch of rednecks!

The original G.I. Joe WAS done by the Japanese and the only reason it looked half as good as animated series like Robotech or Gundam was because Hasbro wanted it to look like Americanized crap.

You people really want more of that Spytroops garbage with the piss poor dialogue, the bad voice acting, the unrealistic, close to Looney Tunes scale, battles and all that other junk!

I honestly just do not know what to say. I've been a fan of both G.I. Joe and Anime for YEARS and the fact that the majority of other Joe fans think the idea of a Japanese style animated series is a poor idea really, really upsets me.

I guess I'll just have to look forward to seeing more Greenshirts getting slaughtered in the comic books. And if this is the majority's attitude I hope we never get a long running G.I. Joe animated series EVER AGAIN!

You wanted honest answers didn't you?

I'm not an expert on WHO or WHAT makes up American versus Japanese made cartoon, or what constitutes an ANIME cartoon, all I know is that the typical stuff I see that is always referred to as Anime, is something I may like for it's style, like the movies Ghost in the Shell or Princess Mononoke or it's something I think is ridiculous looking like the Dragonball Z or Transformers crap.

Faces all looking the same, with lots of yelling, grunting and stupid expressions with the typical "HUH?"

I don't care much for Anime type cartoons, and for them to consider making an Anime cartoon for G.I.Joe wouldn't interest me at all. I wouldn't give up the hobby of collecting action figures, UNLESS they start making them look like the Anime stuff...then bye bye!

Now I know that's probably NOT what you wanted to read, but it's my honest opinion. I don't know what rooting for Cobra has to do with anything against Anime detractors, or why hating Anime, makes anyone a redneck or on a lesser scale of quality fan, than those who do like Anime, but I guess you have your reasons for being upset about it.

A GI JOE Japanese Animation would be cool if it was rated R. Nothing cooler than seeing Snake-Eyes slice and dice some Cobras and ninjas; people actually die instead of jumping out of vehicles just in time... and all that good stuff. But this version of an animated GI JOE cartoon probably wouldn't happen as Hasbro is such a tight-ass about how the franchise GI JOE was used.

But I guess they could also do the slicing and dicing without any gratutious blood and violence, but that would take some of the fun out of it.

I like good Anime. G.I.Joe would work in that format. There was a Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi done as Manga in the stereotypical Japanese, big hair, large eyes style a few years back and they were cool.

It is just a format. It was Robotech that got my interested in Anime and Final Fantasy.

I think its silly to be so close minded.

And like everything in the world, some anime is well conceived and well produced and some is garbage.

I think its silly to be so close minded.

It's merely a difference of opinion on it, not necessarily "close minded".

When the fans are already desperate enough as it is, to get just ONE decent looking G.I.joe cartoon out of Hasbro, the thought of jumping in to an Anime format, is not exactly what we would want.

There's nothing wrong with being a fan of animes, and I don't think any such implications are being made here saying as much. There are definitely some opposers to the question of making G.I.joe into an anime, but that's personal opinion only, and it was asked in just such a manner as "what would you think if..?"

I feel like I'm strong in my opposition to it, as I have a preconceived concept of what I would like to see in a G.I.joe cartoon, and anime is NOT it. It probably wouldn't be any worse than the CGI crap, and actually might be better, but I'm hoping for something a little better than EITHER the two. ;)
