If The G1 Transformers Were Dormant For So Long

Recommended Posts

In the G1 cartoon, the Ark and the Nemesis crashed on Earth and the Transformers lied dormant for thousands of years, they were awakened in 1985 by a volcano eruption. Now here is where the story gets wierd. In a few season two episodes, the decepticons travel to Cybertron through a space bridge, and we are not aware of what happenned when they are there. However, in one episode, Spike and some girl go to Cybertron, and Optimus gives them directions on how to get home, and at one point, they come across Wheeljack's lab.

Can someone please explain to me why Cybertron never changed in the thousands of years that the Autobots lied dormant on Earth. Also, when the Autobots returned to Cybertron, they were treated like they were gone for a few years at the most. The technology hadn't changed, and Wheeljack still had his lab.

That's always one of the major problems I had w/ the G1 cartoon storyline. There's LOTS that would've changed in 4 million years. While we're at it, if Kup is an old warrior yet Shockwave is unchanged after the 4 million years the Earthbound TFs lay dormant, then how old is Kup???? For that matter, if energon supplies were low when Prime and co. left to find more, how was the planet still functioning 4 million years later, and how is it that Shockwave still sought to contact Megatron and knew where/how to contact him??

Bottom line: Don't look too far into continuity/story issues in G1; it'll just wreck it for you. ;)

1. When they left Cybertron the planet was critically low on power. Most operations on a planetary scale were shut down to conserve power. Shockwave also told Megatron that things will be kept as they left it. Thus the planet was basically in a state of stasis with only a few pockets of citizens squabbling. They probably barely had any power to stay alive, much less progress sociologically

2. There is a war going on so many scientists such as Starscream and Jetfire were called to fight. The war had a higher priority than things such as science and culture. So no scientists were around to advance the technology. Lack of cultural development also explains why characters such as Jazz, Blaster and Pipes have immersed themselves in ours so heavily.

3. While millions of years may have passed, Cybertronians have lifespans that last in the millions. Thus their perception of linear time is somewhat different than a race whose average lifespans are just several decades. So basically the 4 million years the Autobots and Decepticons were inactive WERE just a few years to them. Ever notice there seems to be less time between Christmases as you get older? That principle is sort of what's at work here. The longer you live, the quicker time seems to pass. Its a common them with immortal characters or characters with extremely long lifespans. At 973, the 20 years Yoda spent squatting in the swamp waiting for Luke's farmboy ass to show up probably wasnt that big a wait for him.
