Barry, you ignorant slut.

I think the steroids are messing with your brain, Master Bonds. This man is, by far, my least favorite baseball player, ever. Hey Barry, by associating yourself with the Negro Leagues, you are insulting them, you jackass.

July 16, 2003 -- CHICAGO - He is a legend. He is Babe Ruth and more. As Barry

Bonds came to bat last night at U.S. Cellular Field, all eyes were on him.

You knew fathers were telling sons: "There is the greatest baseball player you

will ever see."

Ruth played in the first All-Star Game here in this city and hit a home run.

Now the game belongs to Barry Bonds just like it once belonged to the Babe.

Everyone else is just visiting.

And Bonds has made it crystal clear that the Babe and his records are in his

sights. Bonds, who says he will hang around as a DH, which should give him

plenty of time to shatter Babe's records, has Ruth, not Hank Aaron's home run

mark, on his mind and has talked about Ruth the last two days, noting, "755

isn't a number that's always caught my eye - the only number I'm concerned with

is Babe Ruth's [714]," said Bonds, who owns 643 career home runs.

"As a left-handed hitter, I can say I wiped him on that to the baseball world,

Babe Ruth is baseball, but from what I hear, you have to go back to the Negro

Leagues, too [when looking at records]."

Bonds recently visited the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City and is trying to

raise the consciousness of the baseball world to what those players

accomplished. Give Bonds credit for speaking his mind.

The Major Leagues didn't allow African-Americans to play until 1947. Bonds is

making people aware the game was played by African-Americans long before MLB

invited them to their party and that was long after the Babe retired. He also

knows the difficult times that Aaron had to go through. Imagine if Aaron had

made these comments about taking on the Babe.

"I got him on the on-base one, I got him on walks and once I pass Willie

[Mays], if I'm healthy enough, I got him on homers, too," Bonds said yesterday.

"Then they'll have to put me first."

Monday Bonds said, "I got [Ruth] on slugging percentage [in a season, .863], I

got him on on-base [.582], I got him on walks [198] and then I can take his

home run record and that's all, you don't have to talk about him no more.

"Hank Aaron, to me, goes back to history and I am the next generation of Negro

League ballplayers. He can keep his 755 home run record."

Gary Sheffield is one of Bonds' closest friends and before the game last night

the two smiled and joked with photographers around the batting cage. The two

work out together in the off-season and Sheffield has learned much from Bonds,

who has taken on the role of a mentor.

"As you get older, the more you learn, the more you talk about things,"

Sheffield said of Bonds. "A lot of times we get asked the tough questions about

heroes and we may not know much about them and then [the media] blames us for

not knowing about them. But they never ask about the heroes we know about. When

you are growing up, the first thing you are introduced to is your own race,

your heroes."

That's why Bonds has brought up the name of Josh Gibson as the single-season

home run champ. Bonds hit 73 home runs, but that is still not as many as

Gibson, who smashed 84 home runs in 1936 in a 170-game schedule.

"You have Josh Gibson, who hit 84 home runs," Bonds told reporters. "Why

doesn't it count? But you can tell me in 1886 that the Pittsburgh Pirates won a

game by 20 runs or lost a game by 20 runs."

Bonds was making a point about the media knowing all kinds of statistics. "But

yet their [Negro Leaguers] stats do not count," he said.

Bonds statistics do count - and they will stand forever. Yes, he has Babe Ruth

in his sights and he is not afraid to say it. Barry is taking on the Babe. Like

everything else Bonds does on a baseball field, it's going to be some show.

I don't get the big deal?

The odds are that after Bonds retires, may very well be the greatest player of all-time.

right??? if you consider a steroid machine to be fair game..

however, basically saying that he is the best thing to ever hit baseball and there is no need to even discuss other legendary players makes him an @sshole.. and I despise Barry Bonds... I want to kick his ass

Everybody knows Barry is a jerk, but so what? Ty Cobb was an open racist and jerk, but he's still revered as one of the games greats.

Barry does not have to kiss every fan's or reporter's a$$. The numbers that he has put up over the last 5 years has propelled him from a good player to a great player, has been amazing. I don't know if he's on the juice or not. Looking at the physical changes in his body would suggest that he has, but Barry has also been known for a very rigorus off-season workout schedule since he came to SF.

There are alot of Barry haters out there because of his attitude, but even the media is calling him one of the top 5, if not top player ever. When you are spoken about in those terms, you have the right to say what you want about other legends.

It's time Baseball fans took off the Rose-colored glasses of nostalga.

Also, wasn't the Babe quite controversial in his day?
