I don't know if anyone else holds a special place for 80's pop in their heart, but I do. :D Even though I mostly listen to rock now, I often find myself putting the occasional 80's pop song into my playlists on winamp.

1) Simple Minds - "Don't You Forget About Me" (And the Breakfast Club kicks ass, BTW. ;) )

2) A-Ha - "Take On Me" 8)

3) Real Life - "Send Me An Angel"

4) Prince (yes, Prince! :o  ) - "When Doves Cry"

5) Mr. Mister - "Broken Wings"

This thread is like, so totally awesome!!! Kickin' rad!! ;)

Yeah... I find it hard to believe that anyone who posts in these forums (who pretty much likes at least one aspect of 80s pop culture ;)) would not hold a place for 80s pop in their heart. ;) It's so funky, and catchy, and insane. I love it. :D

Okay... so I couldn't help but list ten songs. I'm so bad at choosing short lists. So I did the top five pop and top five rock... although some of them could fit in both catergories. :P

Top 5 80s Pop

1. You Spin Me Right Round -- Dead or Alive

2. Sweet Dreams -- Eurythmics

3. Whip It -- Devo

4. Take on Me -- A-ha (okay Darthjoe! ;))

5. Always Something There to Remind Me-- Naked Eyes

Top 5 80s Rock

1. Jump -- Van Halen

2. Here in My Car -- (I forget the original artist but Fear Factory did a remake of it recently  )

3. Power of Love -- Huey Lewis & the News

4. Mr. Roboto -- Styx

5. Beat It -- Michael Jackson ()

I'd include "Africa" by Toto up there somewhere, if I thought it were popular enough. It was more like a one-hit wonder. And yes, I think I've found a way to mention that song in almost every music thread I've contributed to in here. :P Shutting up...

Great list Samus. I forgot about "Always Something There To Remind Me." I'm gonna have to download it now. BTW, there was a modern rock band that redid "You Spin Me Right Round"...I can't remember what their name is right now though. :-?

3. Power of Love

I was just watching "Back To The Future" the other night... 8)

Really...? I'm kinda afraid to download it... cause I love the original (extended) version so much. 8) I almost always HATE it when newbies redo an old classic song... the "Here in My Car" by Fear Factory is one rare exception. ;) Is it good? :P

Yeah, not as good as the original, but worth listening to. It has a hard rock edge to it. I'll have to see if I can find out what the name of the band is. :D

I'm actually surprised nobody's mentioned Michael Jackson.

I mean sure, he fucks children and all, but musically, he been a huge seller throughout his career.

Cheers.

Ah well, goes to show what sleep deprivation will do to someone who probably wasn't quite "there" to begin with.

Hey DarthJoe, find the tab for 'Don't you forget about me.' There is so much going on in that song guitar-wise (you would never think so, but this guys hands were all over the fret board when I saw him play this song in concert :D ).

Samus Aran: It's not 'Here in my Car' its 'Cars' by Gary Neuman(?) . Unless there's another song that repeats that phrase throughout. And I think it also might have been Gary Neuman with the Cars, but I always get confused on this.

This is tough, but my list is as follows:

Cherry Pie - Warrant (1990, but who cares, its a hair band! and people associate it with the 80s anyway  )

Smooth Criminal - Micheal Jackson

Final Countdown - Europe

Don't Stop Running - Y & T

Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot (oh yeah, baby! One of the best guitar solos ever!)

I checked, and you are quite right! 8) It's called "Cars" or "In Cars" by Gary Neuman. Muchas gracias! 8)

Holy crap. I LOVE this song. :o It's just a "feel good all over" type song... and yes the guitar solo rules! :)-

Holy crap! You're right! I didn't download the tabs, but I listened really close to the song, and was amazed at all of the guitar work in the background. I probably never noticed it before because it's really, really quiet, and almost drowned out by the drums, vocals, keyboard and bass...plus it just blends in with the rest of the song in a way that's almost unnoticable. Thanks for pointing this out, Maeglin. :D

No problem. Just thought you might like to know, since you sounded confused on it, and it might help if you are interested in tracking the song down. I'm surprised I got the spelling right :-? :D .

Once again, no problem. I figured since you like the song, you might like to learn how to play it, but of course you have to have some kind of incentive to take the time. You're not going to commit yourself to learning a song if it sounds like its only got a few power chords in it, right? That wouldn't be much fun to play, IMO .

Power chords can be fun to play sometimes. :D

I guess I'll make #5 Freefalling (Tom Petty) [as far as I can tell, it was released in 1989]
