As I mentioned in the review thread I thought this was an okay action movie but not a good G.I.Joe movie. Here are some of my problems with it.

Roadblock was not Roadblock. I like the Rock and enjoyed the Rock like character in the movie, but from a G.I.Joe standpoint I am not sure how you can say oh well they totally redid the characters and stuck Joe names on them and that's okay. If it was okay to reinvent Roadblock then why wasn't it okay when they did the same thing to Ripcord in the first movie?

Duke, why they even bothered to bring Duke back in this movie is beyond me cause his role was totally pointless and his death was hallow and meaningless.

Where the hell was General Hawk? Hawk would not have been on the mission that the Joes were killed on yet we are supposed to believe he did nothing while his team was being framed and killed? I know the real reason why Hawk wasn't in the movie is because they didn't bother to bring Dennis Quaid back for the movie but from a story standpoint this was a glaring hole. Its like they wanted us to forget Hawk ever existed.

How did Storm Shadow survive his pending death from the first movie. No explanation for this was given in the movie. And I know some of you can theorize ways he survived, but the fact is the movie did nothing to explain this which was just sloppy storytelling IMO. Again its like they just wanted us to forget he was stabbed to death and fell off in to the water in the last movie.

It was never very clear how much time has taken place between this movie and the first one but since both Cobra Commander and Destro where in prison and Zartan was off pretending to be the President, who was leading Cobra? Who was creating this new invincible weapon. Who was building up the Cobra army which seems to have gotten quit huge since the last movie? Some kind of explanation would have been nice.

RIP Destro cause there is no real believable way he could have survived when that prison blew up.

Ok this was totally just kinda forgotten during the movie but ENGLAND was destroyed. Yeah good job Joes you stopped Cobra but you let them destroy ENGLAND. The world isn't just going to carry on from something like that. The rest of the world isn't just going to forgive the United States cause they let Zartan infiltrate the White House. This would have a devastating impact on the world. I get they wanted to have a cool movie effect of a city being destroyed but this was way overboard. You don't just destroy something like that and then carry on like nothing happened. Maybe in a cartoon you can get away with something like that but not in a movie, if you want any kind of credibility.

While we are at it, how about some kind of explanation of how Cobra managed to launch all these killer weapon satellites into space. Even the President wouldn't be able to sneak up a bunch of weapon satellites like that into space without the rest of the world noticing. Even in the cartoon when Cobra would sneak up something like the MASS device satellite they gave an explanation of how it was done.

The whole Storm Shadow thing. Obviously this was taken from the comics but come on, could it have been any more rushed. Oh look the sword broke therefore im innocent. What no one bothered to examine the sword till now???? This was a great story in the comics but the way the handled it in this movie did not do that story justice.

The Blind Master, is he a member of GIJoe??? Cause he sure acted like it. Course people in the audience kept laughing every time he spoke. I'm not sure if his role was supposed to be comedic relief or serious???

The whole thing about the Joes getting close to the President. Ok I live in DC and my wife who has worked at Secret Service before, so I realize I have a perspective on these things others might not so I will consider this a minor nitpick, but one doesn't just kidnap the Chief of Staff and then get into a party where they can dance with the President and one certainly doesn't just hide in an alley and get a clear shot of the President walking out of building.

The movie had some fun moments and some nice action scenes, but so did the first movie. That still overall doesn't make it a good movie IMO. The only thing this movie really did better than the first was it portrayed Cobra Commander a lot better. But he's still the brother of the Baroness and was Duke's best bud in the army. He is still Rex, the only difference is they got him a cooler mask this time. IDK I just don't really get how people could consider this a good GIJoe movie. Maybe brainless with some good action with the Rock, but not a good GIjoe movie with a well laid out story or plot. And even as just a action movie I would say its only mediocre at best, certainly not The Rock's or Bruce Willis' best movie, and if this movie didn't have the GIjoe name on it I doubt anyone would even really be talking about it.

Sorry I don't mean to be a buzz kill and if you really did enjoy it and think it was a great movie then I'm not going to tell you that you were wrong or something. Everyone views these things from their own perspectives but to me this just wasn't that great of a movie and saying it was better than the first really doesn't say much.

Anyone else catch that quick glimpse of Major Bludd in the beginning when it was discussing what happened to CC and Destro? When it was showing the different files on the screen.

Movie was ok, to me it just seemed like a straight continuation of the first. Cobra Commander looked a lot better in this one though. I think a reboot would have been better.

I saw Major Bludd too!
I'm hoping Destroy survived. He can turn around, form the Iron Grenaiders and start his revenge. Hey, if Storm Shadow can survive getting stabbed for no reason... (My one complaint about the movie)
Sorry, everyone's entitled to their opinion but this I feel was more worthy of the name "GI Joe" than the last one. Maybe it falls short if you're following the comic but I followed the cartoon as a kid so this feels just as good to me

saw it tonight, very dispointed, and as it sinks in i keep getting more disapointed. I'm sure i'll do a full review myself when I can, but JayC hit on several points i would hit on. It was so rushed, Blind master in Joe? The connection with the past movie was fuzzy, and the plot looked like swiss cheese. I tend to think the cheese was tastier than ROC, but still swiss clearly. A third movie could be used to clean up some holes, but this movie suffered from that same problem, trying to fix the last movies mistake.

I do think Duke's death felt more important than Covergirl or the Joes that died in ROC, but it didn't last long.

To me it was like we saw an action scene montage of a good film, like all the story elements where cut out for some reason.

I really enjoyed the Rock as Roadblock. Flint and Lady Jaye were fine too, IMO. CC was done well. There was some good dialogue at times but also some that was groan-inducing (Zartan's water board comment). I was hoping Duke would live. Not because I'm a fan of Tatum, but just a fan of Duke in general. WTF with that Blind Master casting?

Unfortunately the story was all over the place and full of holes, as stated. London blowing up felt wrong. Like they just had some neat footage of a city exploding and just wanted us to see it. And yes, why DID SE and SS wait until it was TOO LATE to attack??? This reminded me of Optimus Prime in TF3--maybe not AS bad. Optimus straight up said he needed to teach the humans a lesson and LET Chicago get f-ed over. Maybe SE didn't realise Lonond was doomed until it was too late (with the terrible editing, it was hard for me to tell).

Joe fans need to be careful about going around saying it was better than the first one. Yep, it was, and it's not saying much. It wasn't bad, but not great. I already know I'm not seeing TF4....I may think twice before seeing another Hasbro movie again.

PS, this does not change my plans to buy Ultimate Roadblock, Ultimate Duke, and Ultimate Flint. It MIGHT make me change my mind about buying the Blind Master. God was that casting bad!

It was said that they were so far underground that they weren't even in-country anymore. Destro's probably fine.

There wasn't any time for any explaining in this movie! It felt way too rushed in parts.....and it seemed like they tried to cram everything they could into the 90 minutes they had.

I pretty sure Blind Master was just there to provide some exposition.......one of the downfalls of a live action Snake-eyes is that he pretty much needs someone on screen with him when he's there by himself to explain whats going on.

I think this is Jon Chu's second movie?? You could tell......from pacing to overall storytelling......the movie never lets you breathe......its almost like "action, action, action, some dialogue, action, action, action......" It plays like a super long highlight reel......almost like a top twenty "GI Joe action countdown" type thing......I think this is why the trailer rocked so hard when we first saw it. His "money shot" directing style is great......but he needs to get the story and heart part down.

Seriously, there was WAY too much going on........Joes attacking, back to Washington, back to Cobra, Arashikage "pimped out fat pad" training sequence, Joes attacking, Cobra again, Washington DC, Joes on the run, Cobra again, DC again, ninja mountain, Joes, Cobra, ninjas........its a mess.......we don't get any time with any of the characters.......

There are seeds of a good Joe franchise here.......it just needs to be found.

Side note- I thought the Rock was great as Roadblock.......he was the Joe that was most fleshed out as a character.....he rapped a little, talked about making it home in time for "Top Chef" , he really seemed like he was into the character......

Yeah but how many chances are you gonna get? With two movies under your belt, both so-so at BEST. Any superhero movie would reboot at this point...after a long hiatus. But GI Joe isn't superheroes--they don't have that popularity to begin with--and I don't know if I see them getting many more chances. Sigh.

The Rock was good as Roadblock and the movie gave me some hope because there WAS actual good characterization right at the beginning with RB and Duke playing video games and shooting the cupcake. Then it all got messed up....

Seriously, how many "Resident Evil" movies are there?? They keep pumping out those awful things......they still have faith in the brand somewhat.....these movies don't have to win Oscars to get sequels......on the topic of them "Getting it right" who knows?? Plus, if it makes money we are going to get more......

I don't want to see GI Joe go down the same road as Resident Evil; just cranking out one mediocer movie after another. Personally, I couldn't give a darn about ANY resident Evil movie. I don't know how many there are because when I hear of a new one it's ignored and quickly forgotten. I don't want Joe Average to think the same thing about GI Joe.

The studio has no intention of taking a long look at this movie and thinking about what works and what doesn't. If it makes X-amount at the end of the weekend, they'll likely do the same thing with number 3. If they don't get better I'd rather them just not have more movies.

It may sound like I hate this movie more than I do but that's really not the case. Like I said, there were some good parts. But these geek superhero/comic/cartoon movies are going to come out 5 per year until the end of time. Some will be really good, some will be really bad, and most will end up just so-so and forgotten. That's what Joe is in danger of being.

This movie was awe...fullll imo. How did storm shadow live? was it nanomites in that case he would have healed from the burn to the back right then. I guess that is not correct. Did the ice water keep him alive who knows. Very poor story telling there. Did storm shadow even have scars? i mean these points are basic story telling 101.

Why get rid of destro again just another poor choice. and baraness what happend to her or ripcord or hawk or the other big name joes from the first movie. Did rip and scarlett quite the joe team thses are major plot points that should have been addressed. I still do not agree with killing off duke i mean really??? really?? why? what purpious did it serve.

Is zartan dead? if he can cut his face and the nanomites heal him how is the sword any different? Couldn't they just heal him again? This movie was not only clumsally put together but really a waste of film and money. On that note we should not be calling for a reboot 1 or 2 films into a series like this. What in the heck is going on in hollywood anymore? The saddest thing is this movie was pushed back to have more stuff with roadblock and duke so we waited even longer to see this turd.

I think there's a difference between simply cutting your face a bit and getting friggin' STABBED!
I do admit it had pacing issues though. It was clearly the work of a director still feeling his way through this medium. So no. Hardly a perfect movie but I came to watch Snake Eyes, The Rock, and Bruce Willis kick Cobra ass and that's what I got.
On a related note, didn't anyone else love how Roadblock totally pwned Firefly at the end? LIKE A BOSS!

I agree with some of the stuff Jay and others pointed out. But it didn't make me not like it. My main beef was the Storm Shadow, and yeah, we can make our own assumptions on how he survived, so I guess it's not too bad, but I also didn't read any of the comics or books, so I don't know if it's mentioned in there either, and yeah, I know, I know, we shouldn't have to read those to get the movie.. but then again, if you went in with just watching this movie and not even bothering with the first, then it's almost like it didn't even matter... He was in arctic water, his body somehow froze and he got out and now he's back. really not that much of a stretch to think about when it comes to movies like this.

I didn't like London getting destroyed either, thought that was kind of a little over the top, but again, I personally feel like it was on par with all the other silly devices that CC came up with. But I agree with the whole who was running Cobra while he was away thing, I wish they did spell that out, maybe with the Maj. Bludd cameo, they could have snuck in a line here and there explaining how they caught him and stuff. It was a bit weird not ever seeing Firefly and then CC comes out and it's like, "What's up homie, long time no see".. they bump knuckles and it's like a family reunion(not really how it happened, lol).. but yeah, I can see that as being weird, but then again, I think it can be seen both ways again, for those not seeing the first, it's like CC had his minions.. and if you did see the first movie, well, I'm sure Rex made some friends off camera while we weren't watching, lol.

One thing I wanted to bring up that Jay mentioned about London being destroyed and then the Joes getting medals after. I honestly think if there was some super duper evil terrorist and a anti-terrorist group stopped them from causing further damage, I'm pretty sure they'd still get medals and be thanked.. at least they wouldn't be...

I will admit that some scenes seemed to just jump into another and I'm hoping for some extended directors cut DVD/Bluray, but some of the things that people are being picky about, I believe they're being just that picky. You can't tell every single tiny part of the story and you have to leave some of it to your imagination, yeah, you can't really get that close to a president, but then again, his secret service was replaced with Cobra, so it's not like he had regular secret service agents... yeah, you see the joes in a desert one min and then walking in the ghetto the next.. but when you left them in the desert they found an airstrip, it's not hard to picture them stealing, borring, calling in a favor to get a ride home.

DJ's Flint didn't bother me like it did others. Some "reviews" I've read really tear him appart, but I didn't feel like that, yeah, he's not the hard nosed Flint we knew growing up as a kid... um, yeah, exactly that, he's not.. but who's not to say, he's not.. YET... They already led on plenty of times that he just joined the Joes.. and we already know it's not going to follow the joes mythos exactly.. so give him time and let him work up to the Flint we all know and love.

I like how they hinted with him and LJ.. I thought that was cool. I didnt have a problem with her "daddy issues".. most people that joint the military have them, lol.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, I had a great time and I'm taking my son to see it tomorrow. He's been getting into it because of the trailers I've been watching, I gave him a bunch of my older joes and made him "movie versions" with some custom fodder I had.. so far we've had 3 battles and I can't wait for him to open his Easter Tread Ripper and 3pack so we can have battle#4!!!

My big, big, big complaint, but maybe I missed it.. I'm hoping I did, but I don't remember them yelling "YO JOE" or "COBRA!".. I was hoping they did that, I know Heavy Duty's "YO JOE" in RoC was weird and sounded stupid.. but I was hoping they'd try it again.

I said it before, I'll say it again, I'll be in line for GI Joe 3, YO JOE!

Well, it was over the top and also kind of out of place. Until that point in the movie you had a lot of bloodless death (including Duke who was the best looking corpse ever considering he was at ground zero of a missile strike  ) and then suddenly....oh...millions of innocent people are dead. OK.

Heh it did kinda come out of no where. I guess they wanted to show just how much business Cobra meant and nothing says "Bow down to me" like blowing up a heavily populated city

I really enjoyed it the intro was a little lame and the I didn't care for the Joes saying hooah I mean that's the army's response they should have been saying Yo Joe but everything else I Thoroughly enjoyed especially the end battle between firefly and roadblock with both of them using two handguns like an old western showdown than moving into hand to hand combat

I just wish Firefly would come back somehow!!! But an explosion at point blank range is hard to escape from!! Unless......he dove into the water as soon as Roadblick turned around?? Plausible?? It'd be nice if it were!!

So I'm a huge Joe fan since the 80's, have every US joe comic and most of the UK stuff as well as a near complete vintage domestic and foreign collection.

Ok that said, I liked Retaliation, it was worth seeing once. I thought everything was fine and it was a good action movie.

Here's my grading:

Plot: 6/10 - No real twists or turns, No significant character exploration HOWEVER I think every character had pretty even screen time. The plot was simple and easy to follow. Everything wrapped up in the end. The film was a bit choppy in pacing in transitions. I like that they left the snake eyes/ storm shadow relationship open ended. It felt like a Special Missions comic. The reason Im giving it a 6 is because they kill Duke, Zartan, Firefly and possibly Destro. I'm really tired of villains dying at the end of movies...especially reoccurring characters

Acting: 7/10- Acting was fine. Alot of these actors are action stars so there's no shakespeare going on. But still nothing terrible or obvious.

Costumes: 8/10- I thought I would hate some of the costumes but actually was fine with jinx in her yellow bruce lee suit. We still got to see her introduced in her red costume. Cobra Commander was great. Roadblock, Firefly looked fine. I still don't like the generic look to most joes (lady jaye, flint, duke ect) but I kinda understand the realism they're tryin to go for. I still dont like storm shadow's trenchcoat like costume, and would prefer a simple ninja outfit.

Cinematography: 8/10 THe movie was well shot. The mountain scene was the clear highlight. The transitions were choppy and pacing was rushed in places.

Accuracy: 5/10- I hated the vehicles. If they are going to make a HISS tank then let's make it look like the vehicle, same for water moccasin, whale, and RAM. The only one I liked was the Awe Striker, which is pretty hard to screw up. All the vehicles looked like welded scrap. Where was the FANG, Trouble Bubble? This movie is supposed to take place in the future, Come on!!

THey changed elements of the Hard Master murder that were unecessary, and explaining how the arashikage and blind master relate to Gi joe was non existent. Also, I hated Firefly taking off his mask. Masks are very important in gi joe. i like the cobra pins on the security, but there should have been some vipers/ televipers something like that around.

There are tons of Joe references that could have been included in dialogue background, costumes that would've been easy to do and really make it feel like GI Joe. We didnt even get a "Yo Joe!"

Overall: 7/10- The film is an ok movie, its missing a real emotional component. And it doesnt seem confident enough to really embrace the GI joe mythos, it kinda stays to the generic safer aspects. IF Cobra Commander was substituted for your generic meglomaniac...it wouldnt just be a regular B action flick. That being said, it is hard to film a team movie and i like that time was spread pretty evenly across all characters. Good for a popcorn movie, and 100% better than the garbage 1st movie which I will pretend never happened. Maybe the next film will be better.

Just came from it and yeah better then the first one but it lacks a lot. I thought the movie took so long to get out just because they didnt wanted duke to die or am i mistaken? Everything seemed rushed and unfinished like with jinx. Snake eyes you have to trust her? Why? What is up with her? Was she a cobra member? Well i guess. Cobra commander was awesome. The rock too. Flint could be a lot better. It even seemed to me that potential was there but the character was lost somehow or didnt got enough screentime and where the heck was his berret?? I mean come on. Lady jaye needed a different hair cut. Storm shadow came back from the dead and gets injured again. That story was also rushed and it seems a bit out of place. I loved the movie but it could be a lot better. Maybe its because i love the rock. I even think that i saw 3 scenes in the end credits that werent in the movie. Did i miss something with the storm shadow zartan fight? Shadow was looking for zartan and suddenly he looked all beat up facing zartan.

I finally got to see it last night, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. A lot of things were done very well. My impressions:

The Good: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was fantastic as Roadblock. A lot of concerns I had never materialized; they didn't build him up as the new leader of the Joes like I was expecting, although he was their figurative leader once everyone else was wiped-out, but that was understandable. And they didn't focus on the "honorary member of the Arishikage Clan" angle like I feared they would. He briefly mentions how he trained with Snake Eyes, and they moved-on with the story. The few times he grabs a .50 Cal. machine gun was a nice nod to the original character. He just wasn't the "Superman" character I was expecting, and everything didn't revolve around him like I had feared would be the case. He was simply a part of the team like he should have been, and I thought his character was portrayed very well.

I loved Jinx. She made an excellent understudy for Snake Eyes, and every scene she was in was awesome. She was also written and portrayed very well.

Also, Flint wasn't as much of a disposeable character as some have made him out to be. I found the character very enjoyable.

Firefly stole the show for me when it came to the Cobra characters. I wasn't too sure about his casting at first; he seemed too big and bulky to me to be a sneaky saboteur, but he pulled it off very well. I loved his look, his southern accent, just everything about the character clicked for me.

The mountain scene was just as epic as I was expecting. It was definitely the highlight of the film for me. It was exceptionally impressive in 3-D. So awesome...

Speaking of which, I absolutely loved that off-road vehicle Snake Eyes and Jinx drove to the base of the mountain. I'd be all over that thing if they made a toy of it...

Cobra Commander was another character that was done very well. He had such a classic look, and his actions and dialogue were right in line with what I would have expected out of him.

Storm Shadow becoming a temporary, uneasy ally was right in line with the comics, and I thought that was also incorporated very well.

The opening scene showcasing what the Joes were made of was alot of fun, although Flint leaping around and climbing like Spider-man was a little goofy.

I also loved how Lady Jaye was portrayed. She was a much more solid and fleshed-out character than I was expecting.

I really liked how they established their own film, yet they did seamlessly acknowledge the events in the first one. It wasn't as awkward a transition as I had feared.

I absolutely loved the scene where Colonel Colton reveals all of the hiding places in his house for weapons. It was funny but cool, without seeming silly and cartoony. And then Lady Jaye says something like, "What's this say about his neighbors?" (lol) I loved that scene.

The Bad: I really didn't like how Duke was killed-off. I mean, if they were gonna do it, him sacrificing himself to save another Joe is definitely the way to go, but...it just seemed like a missed opportunity, to build up his friendship with Roadblock, to have the funny banter they exchange, only to kill him off. It does provide more of a motivation for Roadblock's character, and that was also portrayed well, but it seemed unfortunate, to see Duke's character reduced to a plot point.

There were a few times where the flow of the movie was a little spotty. It wasn't as bad as some people have been saying, but it was noticeable.

I wish Joseph Colton's role had been expanded a little, but for a cameo, it was a really good one.

I'll echo something that JayC touched on, about how unlikely it would have been for Roadblock to have an opportunity to take a shot at the president coming out of a public function like he did; the Secret Service would have secured at least a mile radius of that place, if not more. But hey, it's just a movie, right?

The Ugly: Snake Eyes is my all-time favorite G.I Joe character, and I absolutely loved his new look in the film, but it seemed silly for him to always be in uniform, especially at the awards ceremony at the end. I'm sure it might have confused the average movie-goer if they portrayed him in a rubber mask like they did in the comics for his "civilian" scenes, but it just seemed silly for him to always be in his combat gear. I mean, after all, it wasn't because of any disfigurement like in the comics, and if it was, it was never mentioned in either film. It's a minor nit-pick though. I just felt like some kind of "off-duty" look for Snake Eyes would have been more appropriate for the non-combat scenes. Otherwise, he was my favorite part of the movie.

The tank-thingy Roadblock drove at the end was UGH-LY! (lol) It maneuvered very well and did a lot of damage. I guess I just wished it looked like a cool G.I. Joe toy that would have served as the toy commercial that we would have all responded to and ran-out and bought afterwards.

Cobra Commander's face peering out of that containment tank gave me the creeps. Brrr...

Zartan died way too easily at the end. It's as if the director forgot that the president's character was actually a disguised trained killer. And one might say that Johnathan Price wasn't physically able to pull scenes like that off, but Zartan didn't need the disguise anymore, so he could have morphed back into Zartan for a cool fight scene.

The Blind Master...that was a bit of casting that was waaay off. His lines were great, don't get me wrong, but...I think his role was cast as a favor or something. (lol)

Another thing I'll reiterate is the destruction of London...yes, it was very dramatic, and yes, it firmly established Cobra as a global threat, but there was no other mention of it afterwards. it would have been nice to see some news report about the recovery or reconstruction effort that would have been underway. just some little mention in the news about it would have been nice.

Oh, one more thing that was a huge bummer...as I was paying for my tickets, I happened to notice behind the box office glass there was a whole stack of the promotional premier night posters, and I asked the young lady how I could get one. She said, "I could just give you one. How many do you want?" I happily took two of them and ran back to the car to put them away before the movie started. When I got home to check them out, they were horribly creased and wrinkled on one corner, as if someone had wadded them up in their hand. Now the young girl that gave them to me had to slightly roll them up to fit them through the hole on the box office window, but I didn't think they would be crinkled-up so badly. *sigh* I may go back to get some new ones, or maybe ask around and see if any other local theaters have some left. I just love that print and would love to get one framed...

All in all, I loved this movie. It improved on the flaws of the original without completely dismissing it altogether. I'd imagine that would have been a pretty hard task to overcome as a writer, but I feel like they pulled it off swimmingly. The characters were portrayed very well, and the movie really felt like G.I. joe to me. Bring on the third one.
