Well when it rains it pours
With people coming out about how they didn't like the prequels Spielberg now comes out on his opinion of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have worked in tandem on the last four Indiana Jones films—with Spielberg handling the visuals and Lucas in charge of the script. While that arrangement worked like a charm for the first three archaeological adventures, Spielberg admits there were ... problems ... with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
While talking to Empire Magazine about Tintin, Spielberg mentioned that Lucas is hard at work on the story for Indiana Jones 5—and took the time to explain his feelings about the oft-criticized Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:
"I'm very happy with the movie. I always have been ... I sympathise with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn't want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in—even if I don't believe in it—I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it. I'll add my own touches, I'll bring my own cast in, I'll shoot the way I want to shoot it, but I will always defer to George as the storyteller of the Indy series. I will never fight him on that."
However, Spielberg can't quite defend everything about Skull. He even agrees with that most notorious fan complaint:
"What people really jumped at was Indy climbing into a refrigerator and getting blown into the sky by an atom-bomb blast. Blame me. Don't blame George. That was my silly idea. People stopped saying 'jump the shark.' They now say, 'nuked the fridge.' I'm proud of that. I'm glad I was able to bring that into popular culture."
Well, I suppose it's nice to be proud of something Crystal Skull-related.

Ancient Aliens is also a very common conspiracy theory these days. There's been many books based on the idea that aliens visited ancient cultures and civilizations and helped them in every aspect of their lives, helped them build things and left.

Y'know feat, as much as I love both movies, I agree...Crusade almost became too comical and fantastical at times. And it did seem like one big family reunion towards the end of Crystal Skull. I don't know that it ever occured to me until just now. I guess every character served their purpose well enough; Mutt was the tag-along "understudy", as it were, and they were trying to save Marion of course, but then they were also saving Oxley, who was a dear friend of them all, and Mac was the friend-turned-traitor-turned-friend-then-back-to-traitor. (I think?) (lol) It just almost became too much.
Like I said, and you as well, I could have completely done without the monkeys, but that was pretty much my only contention with it. It was just so much fun to see Indy kicking after all these years.

Yup, and and to a further degree, supernatural stemming from religious artifacts.
"God's head doesn't look like that."
"Depends on who your god is."
I don't get the negative backlash on this movie solely based on "Aliens don't belong in an Indiana Jones movie." Though the execution might be lacking(monkey swing?), the theme totally fits.
I take it the anti-aliens Indy fans never got as deep into the expanded world of Indiana Jones in comics, video games, and The Young Indy series...I mean, if they had a hard time swallowing aliens with an ancient religious connection, I dont know how they would take some of the other crap: the Golden Fleece, vampires, zombie-Nazis, Vikings, rooming with Elliot Ness, etc.

Yup...Indian artifact plus a lame story about The Untouchables Babies....It happened.

George was playing off the old Flying Saucer scaring of people back in the 50's Thats why he used them.I have no problem with this because I'm very sure we have been visited before.

Yup, and that's another angle that should work fine in Indiana Jones. Execution, again, lacking...but Older Indy in the 1950's + transitioning from 30's serial to pulpy 50's sci-fi + ancient religious artifacts of alien origin = totally acceptable in my love of the Indiana Jones canon.

I think he mentioned retiring to make smaller films, but mentioned still wanting to persue Indy 5. fingers crossed.
