Are ANY elements of the Alexander Courage themes in this soundtrack and in the movie?
That is one of the things that will seal the deal for me.
Yes. In the ending credits the theme from the original series is clearly heard. I bought it today off Itunes. I am enjoying it though I do love movie soundtracks. My favs are Superman, Batman Begins, Star Trek the Motion Picture and all the Star Wars movies. Raiders is up there to.

I have all the origional trilogy,Startreks 1 and 2 E.T.,Raiders and TOD along with Superman and Jurassic Park soundtracks
Since then I haven't been a fan of current soundtracks
They don't have the same flair as these movies did

They also don't have the same coherence & rational thought behind them. All too often the few ACTUAL movie soundtracks we get (the ones that aren't simply crap compilations with the movie art slapped on the cover) have become more of a "sampler" than a soundtrack. I loved the Dark Knight & Pirates of the Carribbean soundtracks, but a good chunk of those are almost medleys & tracks not even in the order in which they were used in the movie. This pisses me off to no end, and I can't tell you how disappointed I was when John Williams started doing it. Nobody cares about resequencing cues to form a different kind of soundtrack album, we want the music the way it was presented in the movie.
Giacchino seems to understand this, based on his Speed Racer score from last year (which is actually the only thing of his I've heard previously) and I actually enjoy listening to the CD specifically because it's a musical souvenir of the movie experience (and yes, I LOVED that movie. I had more genuine FUN watching it than any other movie last summer, even though I loved Dark Knight the most. So, NYAAAHHHHH)
Anyway, the Star Trek soundtrack seems pretty good so far even without the movie serving as reference. The "main" theme seems to be used pretty damn often, but maybe there's a reason for that. So far, so good is what I'm saying.

For more recent soundtracks I think Batman Begins and to some extent Dark Knight are really great soundtracks. The one from Transformers isn't to bad either, the intrument one not the music one.

Actually, I thought the soundtrack was exceptionally well-done in regards to Courage's themes.
Basically, through most of the soundtrack (and presumably movie) they toss in tiny little "hints" towards the original theme, but it never fully materializes....
Until (again, I presume) the triumphant ending, which segues from "To Boldly Go" which is a sweeping version of the classic Star Trek "prologue" straight into the End Credits, which is a rocking (not literally, thank god) arrangement of the original series theme.
I predict people staying through the credits on this one.

Musically, I agree. But they're all guilty of rearranging the cues to present (what I'm presuming to be) a more "artistic" album. And the Dark Knight soundtrack left a lot out from the movie, then was re-released as a 2-CD album & STILL left things out & messed with the order.
I love the music in the soundtracks I buy, I'm just saying I should be able to just play the damn thing & not have to do any further research regarding where/when each track was used in the movie.
And Wheeljack: I really dug that Speed Racer end theme song too, but it's unfortunately not on the soundtrack. It was released seperately as a single by Ali Dee & The Kompressors. Track 4 (Film Version) is the "Mach a Go-Go/Go Speed Racer" version.

Also fans of the original series should listen for the very first sound heard in the movie.

That kinda chirping/pinging sound from the original series bridge, I think it may even be the viewscreen.
Speaking of sfx, I noticed Verizon has 7 or 8 new movie ringtones for sale. One is a combo of red alert, communicator & transporter sounds. There's also a few lines of dialogue available, but not really anything worth paying $3 for.
