I have never in my life been to any kind of convention before. But when I found out that there was a Joe con in the same city I live in I figured 'why not? If it sucks, I'll leave.' So I get in my car and tell the wife 'I'll be home in a hour, or so'. Turns out it was 'or so'. Six hours later she calls my cell 'Where the hell are you?'. It was pretty cool.
Why?
1st) Met a lot of fellow collectors, along with people from various boards. I personally don't really know any other collectors (all my friends think I'm crazy) and I think it really helps the hobby to get to meet so many people as passionate (or more so) about it.
2nd) LARRY HAMA!! Was there doing a meet and greet. It was a pleasure to meet 'the man', I really didn't know what to say to him other than 'Thank you'.

3rd) Got to see the prototypes for wave 9! Bazooka looks f'n awesome! He's a little taller and has more girth than your average Joe. Hawk seems to have dark hair instead of blonde hair as I originally thought, and the BATs? Hell yeah!

4th) Got to see some awesome customs, of which featured was our very own Xhairs.

5th) Saw this very hardcore dude!

He's the same guy in this link.

6th) Hasbro gave us a Q&A featuring mostly questions about Canadian distribution and who we Canuks can get you hands on store exclusive. Hint: Target = Zellers

I have my passport because of work. I've been to Toronto about a half dozen times for work, so I know I need it to fly. Right now, I've been told, to drive, all you need is a photo ID. What about a year from now? Will we need passports then? I am trying to get some info for my group.

I believe June, 2009 will be the "passport required by car" date. As our Canadian conventions are always held in April, you should be good to go for 2009 without a passport, if you are driving up.
I know of at least 7 Americans that were at the show this year (not including Mr. Hama or Mr. Bellomo, that is)

Lots of dealers, mostly selling old ARAH stuff. You would have done well completeing some of those vehicles. Some one had the Flagg for sale, it went for $400.00.
There was a fair amount of 25th aniversary stuff for sale. The newest were the TRU and target exclusives which were for sale at very inflated prices. Eg. Hiss tank $9.99 in a target store, $20.00 - $25.00 a pop at the con.

A passport is never a bad thing to have anyway, I believe right now you need a driver's license and a birth certificate to get over the boarder in lieu of a passport. Since I don't know where my birth certificate is, a passport is the way to go for me.
Seriously thinking about making the trek down for some cons in the U.S.
