Why didn't TNI get any? Y'all should have. This site had the most extensive coverage and pictures from Mattel's panels of upcoming merchandise while the other two websites mentioned were quite anemic in terms of content in this regard. So how Fwoosh or AFI ends up with the extras is mindboggling or more to the point all about who you know since from what I gather the webmasters at those two sites are pretty cozy with Toy Guru.

If I were TNI I'd lobby for some of those extra Gleeks to give away here.

I actually thought it was very cool that Fwoosh got a bunch of monkeys to give away, it helped get them to people who couldnt make it to the con. Sure if would've been nice if they could've tried to fix things with con-goers that didnt get Gleek, but no matter what they did people would still be pissed off.

I'd say Fwoosh i more than just a "small fansite".

Opticon, No one said it wasn't cool for Fwoosh to give em away, and thats not the issue. The issue is Mattel had an obligation to get those Gleeks to those who went to the con and bought the sets like they had originally stated. Please don't try to tell me you wouldn't be pissed if you got home after standing in lines for hours to get that set with the impression you would be getting Gleek and find you hadn't gotten it.

As for Fwoosh being small, im sorry but I don't think Fwoosh gets half the traffic TNI gets on a monthly basis and in the overall scheme of websites out there TNI is still considered fairly small when you compare it to something like an IGN or AICN. For a website to be considered large you need readers in the millions not hundreds or even thousands, and for a company the size of Mattel to think that by going on some message board, they are doing a proper job of informing their customers, that just boarders on absurd if not down right insulting to this hobby as a whole.

I'd be very pissed to have waited in line, expecting a Gleek, not finding out I didn't get one till I got home, and THEN finding out I could have gotten one had Mattel not misplaced them and THEN to find out Mattel wasn't going to pass them out to people who should have gotten one, but instead gave them to a website to do whatever they wanted to do with them.

I know you didnt mean it that way, but lots of people are making it the issue, just look at posts on Facebook or AFI. And yes, i would've been thoroughly pissed if I had gone and gotten screwed out of getting any of the stuff....but there was no way for Mattel to fix this that would'be pleased everyone. No matter what solution they came up with, some group of people would be angry.

Granted I've never looked into traffic or number of users, but I always figured fwoosh was about on par with tni, at least in terms of mattel-related postings. Fwoosh and TNI are my two main boards, and of the two I'd say fwoosh seems to be much more active. But thats just personal observation.

I tend to forget about sites like IGN or AICN because they're more multimedia-related sites, so thats my bad.

This is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing

Mattel has these items and they wanted to get rid of them, someone took the most expeditious means and....well, now there is criticism.

But you know there's a potentially beneficial outcome to this?

Take this instance, and make a big stink about it. A huge stink.

Let Mattel know you are not happy, liaison with other sites and make it a big big grievance.

The aim: to get them to make another figure of Gleek and re-release the set again.

AND, for next year, in addition to what they plan for the con, conduct a poll asking for the numbers of non-attendees that ALSO want the offered figure, and to make a separate non-attending version to be sold on Matty.

Then things truly become "fair" for all involved and Mattel and the convention-goers can both avoid hassles like this.

The point though you are reaching a very small niche on any of these message boards. This whole concept of someone running from a toy company on to any of these boards thinking if they post something instantly the entire world is going to know is the dumbest thing I've ever heard and can't believe Mattel tried to justify that as getting the word out. That's not supporting the collector community, that's laziness. If Mattel really wanted it to be known Gleeks would be in short supply at the con they would have written up a press release and sent it out to all the media sites to be posted in their news sections, long with posting it on their website and Facebook page and then told people at the show.

WOW!!

KUDOS!!

this is a great peice! so many times do we only get hype and, regardless if you agree or dont, this is factuall story not makeing excuses for matty or really condemning them all that much!

maybe mattel will actually take action since it comes from a site and not a forum or thier FB page, which they only post, rarely respond to actual problems.

Mattel won't do a damn thing!! Those who wanted Gleek are stuck out!! Mattel it seems has a bunch of monkeys running the boys division!! They are running this, what could be the greatest comic line, into the ground!!! I mean what the hell is going on??? Raising prices, extremely limited items, shotty product, and this "we won't change our minds no matter how wrong we are" mentality is going to end this line sooner than later!!!

Jay C, I wish you would have made an announcement or covered the MOTU art book fiasco as well!!! Monkeys I tell you, monkeys!!!

I agree with you Lady Jaye.

As a fan of both their 2 most famous lines, MOTUC and DCUC, it surprises me the business managing skills they show. Did it ever occur to them that they could sell them on their own site?! Don't get me wrong, tomorrow I'll be trying to get the Twins but it won't feel complete without the damn monkey.

They have 2 of the best and hottest action figure lines at the moment and it just saddens me that there is always problems with something be it availability, quality control, etc.

And JayC if you ever get some Gleeks put my name down for 1 :D

hasbro wouldn't do this. then again, hasbro likes to please while mattel loves to piss off fans.

True

It is great that Hasbro makes their exclusives available in abundance at their webpage. They even restock SDCC exclusives once they are sold out (they did that the previous ml set)

Maybe the Gleek incident will let Mattel know how not to release another exclusive. Maybe it is best to have the monkey available as oppose to havin it only sold at the show floor. IMO, I think in the biz perspective, it is more logicial to let anybody be able to get gleek rather than a few

The sad thing about all of this surrounding Gleek is that had Mattel made Gleek available at SDCC and Matty on Monday there would have been none of this backlash that has spread across the internet for the last week. If they just had to have a SDCC exclusive put the SDCC logo on Gleek's chest in place of his "G" and sell the regular Gleek on Matty like they did with He-Ro.

Instead because of their intransgient attitude they've created this backlash against them. It seems this Gleek fiasco was the breaking point for a lot of fans who weren't happy with the wave 5 fiasco, the quality control issues, the poor distribution, the price hikes yet were wiling to stick with Mattel despite these annoyances. This was the straw that broke the camel's back and all the anger directed at Mattel we've been seeing is just the culmination of all the frustrations.

Really any fool could have seen this coming and what takes the cake is Mattel knew the outrage months ago with the whole No Monkey No Money movement shortly after the Gleek announcement in April. They had plenty of time to correct this and increase the numbers for Matty sets but instead of doing this they were stubborn and were adamant they weren't going to change their minds. Now they've got people mad at them. People mad at Fwoosh. Fwoosh posters that didn't win mad at other Fwoosh posters and Fwoosh. You've got SDCC attendees mad that they were there and bought a Twins set but didn't receive a Gleek ponly to learn posters at Fwoosh who didn't go to SDCC and didn't buy a Twins set got their Gleeks. You have people that preordered a Gleek set from ebay but once the scalpers saw what they could make off of them they cancelled the preorders. Now Mattel is furthering dissent among fansites who weren't given Gleeks while others were.

I got to hand it to Toy Guru and Mattel when they screw something up they go all out

The last thing you want to do is rock the boat with an adult collector oriented line like DCUC. And Mattel won't learn a thing from this we'll be here bemoaning the SDCC 2010 only Mr Myxlplyk poly bagged giveaway.

THIS is complete CRAP!!! I was among the many collectors at the SDCC and i was booted off the line on "PREVIEW NIGHT" for being a "PROFESSIONALS" Mattel had slips of PAPER of the wall and on the ropes saying "for 4 day members only" no Staff, No Press and NO PROFESSIONALS!!!" seing that Mattel also had me going in circles for about an hour looking for the line... (which they were pointing in different directions on where the GHOSTBUSTERS and WONDERTWINS line was) on Thursday MORNING they told me they were completely SOLD out!!!

And what's worst how could they NOT make gleek part of the Wondertwins after the SHOW??? i mean he was always there with them? i don't know guys like HASBRO this line is coming to an uprupt end and very soon... I love and TREASURE my DCUC and JLU but how can you TREASURE something you can't get???

So what's Mattel going to do about it?? your guess is as good as mine... NOTHING!!! will Mattel care for it's Consumers??? possibly NOT...

there you go

Look, I have no problem with Mattel saying to collectors that Gleek is a Comic con exclusive only and won't be sold online with the twins. I'm trying to look at this from an angle where I live in Nor-cal and spend on air fair, registration fee, cab fees, hotel fees just attend the comic con for the last 7 years, anyone who goes to any Comic Con knows how much you have to spend in order to attend one of these, and the least they can do is give anyone who attends AN EXCLUSIVE to the CON, so what's the point of calling the wonder twins an exclusive if you can buy them on line in a week. So in saying this, a lot of money is spent even before I get in line to get a exclusive from any company like Hasbro or Neca or dumb a$$ mattel. there should have been enough Gleeks for every Wonder Twins sold at the con. No Excuses Mattel, but once again you live up to your reputation of being total idiots. If you ever had to deal with Mattel at the con you know exactly what I'm talking about. Last year was the worst, changing rules while people are in the middle of the line, selling cases to dealers, and limiting 1 or 2 to people who were in line for hours. No Excuses, This portion of the company (Mattycollectors) who deal with collectors have no respect for the amount of effort and money we put out to receive their products. My 2 cents are up

P.S. Absolutely NO surprise that they lost or misplaced a box of Gleeks, Their collective IQ is the same as a box of rusty nails

This shows part of the problem with Mattel right here...quoted from Toyguru over at AFI:

How would that be special for those who make the effort to go to SDCC? If everything at SDCC was also sold online, why bother coming to the show?

We will always have special items and events only for those who come out to SDCC. Just the way it is folks.

If they don't understand that people go to the show for the show itself, then they've got bigger problems.

You know BRO, i feel the same way exactly... after all those displays they had at the Mattel booth and those beautiful prototype figures you see there are all mostly going to their damn website and the chances on getting those??? well let me putting in bold words GOOD LUCK!!!

Exactly. If I want to go wait in a long line only to be greeted by a rude employee I could just run down to my local DMV.

He seems to be oblivious to the fact that conventions have been going on for decades thriving with large crowds and there are no exclusives offered. Just look at Star Trek cons. Toy Guru seems to not understand fans come to cons to interact with other fans, attend panels etc but how can one do that when you are busy standing in a long line for 4 hours a day and told to come back the next day in the offchance you *might* get an exclusive.

I think Mattel would realize that most attendees would actually rather there be no exclusives.

I have not forgettin that Hasbro had problems with their ML line. The point l was making ISN'T about quality control on that particular toyline(that is for another thread) but rather, how Hasbro handled exclusives (whether it is marvel or their own in house lines) in the past. With the exception of their DP Destro exclusives, Hasbro has been great in havin exclusives available. l simply referred to the savageland boxset since it was one of the recent exclusives l remembenr where hasbro restocked the set months after the con.

As for the ML line being crummy, it is unrelated on how Hasbro handles convention exclusives. One of the reasons ML died is because of the strange articulation and lack of paint applications. The ml line was dying even before the nemesis wave delays (I mention that in case someone bring it up as the main cause of the ml being dead).

Every toy company has its flaws but when it comes to exclusives availablity, hasbro handles it well.
