If you could go back and work on the animation team or the toyline and had say what was going on would you kept going on as it was Optimus and Megatron in chaege and all stories still on earth in the 80s? .Would you do it or go in a different direction like they did?

This is a bit of a tough one. I may be one of the few, but I didn't mind the fact that they killed Optimus in the movie. Heck, the movie wouldn't be half as epic as it was if they didn't; however, things fell a bit apart after the fact. I'm not sure if what came first, the terribly blocky toy designs or the inconsistent animation and characterization that season 3 suffered from. While I didn't mind most of the toys (in my opinion, they didn't really start to really go downhill until year 5), the main Autobot Cars and Decepticon jets were terrible designs. The combiners though, I loved as well as the city toys.

I think that as far as the cartoon was concerned, I would have pushed for more consistency with Rodimus, and to have him portrayed more so in the likeness of his movie characterization: a strong, individual prepared to take the helm of leadership. There was always room for self-doubt, but at the same time, it shouldn't have become his defining character trait. I also always hated the fact that he wasn't present in every episode. There were quite a few in Season 3 that feature Ultra Magnus as the team leader (if I recall correctly) and Rodimus never shows. I think it bothered me because if they were trying to establish him as a leader, why not have him present at all times? And speaking of characters, where was Springer in season 3? I mean, he was there, but his role was so downplayed that it was complete disappointment following the time he was given in the movie; I always though he gave the group a much needed injection in the personality department that the Autobots lacked without him.

On a positive note though, I liked insane Galvatron and Cyclonus (although his voice changed mid-season - did the original guy die?), as well as the episodes with Starscream.

I may be one of the few, but I also liked the space opera setting. I think that it lent itself to solid opportunities in story-telling that (unfortunately) were never really taken advantage of to their fullest potential. There were some great episodes, and then there were some terrible ones (Carnage in C-Minor? Ugh!).

Oh, and I would have gone with the studio that animated "Call of the Primitives" or whatever the episode was that looked far superior than the rest of the season. Whomever they did go with must have set a record for animation errors.

I don't think I would have brought Prime back either. I felt like it was a cheap out that undercut the whole season. I realize Hasbro took a lot of crap for killing him, but what was the point? The show only lasted 3 more eps after they brought him back anyway. Besides, didn't they kill off the Arielbots in the Return of Optimus Prime? I distinctly remember being ticked off about that as a kid. I'll have to re-watch to be sure. I probably would have axed the Protectabots instead.

Yes the Arielbots where kill but it was season 4 when Glavatron had use Cybertron as a moving planted and need full for the rockets. He told Swindle and the other Combaticons to rip out there power core for the roctet full.

First off the origional movie too me still is the BEST of all the movies including Bays...

For one I don't why the powers that be pushed for them to be in space in the future. That turned me off and pusshed me to finally watch GI Joe since it took place in the 80's.Funny for me since I like futuristic shows.

Yeah Cyclonus voice did change..Roger Carmel who did both his and Motormasters voice died.Funny during that period in time we lost him ,Scatman and Orsone Wells.

I hated the choice for Rodimus's voice He was better as Serpentor then the Autobot leader.

As for Galvatron I always did thin k when he landed on that planet in the 5 faces of darkness his logic chip was knocked loose making him different then his old Megatron self who had plans in each episode. After that we never seen Galvatron with a plan he was always screaming and bullying his troops

Another stupid thing about the setting was the aliens..They were the size of the Transformers and we know they were huge compared to humans

And speaking of characters, where was Springer in season 3?

maybe its been a long time since you seen season 3.

out of 30 season 3 episodes, Springer appeared in 14 of them

On a positive note though, I liked insane Galvatron and Cyclonus (although his voice changed mid-season - did the original guy die?),
I believe the voice actor change in Cyclonus case was not mid seqason 3 but starting with "the return of optimus prime.

and yes the actor died.

I dont think theres reason enough to think the Arielbots where kill

yes, Galvatron ordered their power packs removed, but we later see that Ultra magnus poer pack was removed, and he was seen alive at the end.

if he could survive having his pp removed, so can the Arielbots

14 out 30 sure, but he rarely talked; whereas in the movie, he at least contributed to some side commentary. I missed his personality. :(

And yes, it has been awhile. That's why I asked about the death of the Arielbots; I couldn't actually recall.

And even if one appeared later, who's not to say that wasn't an animation error? Pretty sure Bruticus appeared next to (and in scale with) independent combaticons at some point in season 3 or 4.

The same probably holds true with the powerpacks though. Season 4 is rough; I dread watching that, but maybe I'll give it a spin to check it out for sure. I usually prefer the first 12 or so eps of Headmasters.

try re-watching

14 out of 30, and in more then half of that 14 he had a pretty predominant roll.He had more lines then most in those episodes.

it was ultra Magnus that we see alive after they remove his powerpack.

and he had dialog as well, so no error, it was by intent.

Sorry. Wasn't talking about Ultra Magnus; I thought someone mentioned that the one of the Arielbots reappeared later; must have read it when I did a quick internet search.

Probably from what is says on wikipedia:Arielbots

"The Decepticons then later on after the Combaticons had made sure they were defeated, under Galvatron's orders scavenged their parts to construct a super engine to move the planet Cybertron. It is unknown if they survived or not, though one does appear jumping up and down with Bumblebee indicating that they might have survived."

Do they mean Goldbug?

not sure who they mean, I've gone and rewatched the scene, Goldbug and Bumblebee are both seen in the shot, among a few other characters, almost all are animated incorrectly.Colors are wrong on some, target masters guns the same size as those that hold them.

What I don't get is this takes place in the real world a year after the Arielbots were intoduced..Why kill them off so early with sets still on the shelves?

you are miss-remembering the dates.

real world, "the rebirth" aired November 1987, 2 years after the Arielbots were introduced in November of 1985.

and like I said, I see no reason to assume they were ever intended to be considered dead.

Only damaged and not moving as we have seen many times before.

This. I wish Hasbro (or whomever) would have ponied up for a better animation studio. Some of the errors throughout the season are so terrible, starting with the first story arc, that it pains me to watch this season sometimes. Definitely more prevalent than season 1 and 2.

With season 4 on the last epidso of Rebirth yes Bumblebee is there but I play it off as a error and that he was sopost to be Goldbug. As with Silverbolt and the others I myself had clare them dead send we saw Swindle take them away when Blass Off and Brawl I think load them up in Swindle and never saw them again.

if never seeing a character again was an indication of death then there are many more dead characters then we can count.

Galvatron ordered that the AB's be taking to the giant rocket to have their power packs removed for fuel for the rocket.

Ultra Magnus's body was also taken to the same place and his power pack was removed and his body dumped in a pile.

after Spike saved the day, Magnus was seen recovering....along with a number of other robots that were in the pile.

if he survived, theres good reason to believe they all did.

Onr thing I hated about season 3 is how stuipe they made Grimlock he was more of a joke then a worrier like he was in season 1 & 2 and he was about the only Dinobot we saw once in a wild the others would show up.

yeah, that pissed me off too

Plus most of the time we would see them as there toy size indicated..smaller then the new bots.I loved when the Dinos were huge not tiny

I agree with most of the points you mention and as a matter of fact I never saw and did not know the movie existed until 2001 when one of my pals at the University told me about it and lend me a VHS(VCR) video of it.

For me there was no problem when I saw season 3 without seen the movie. I just remember it was so cool the new models and I was not into the Transformers toys (WAY Expensive at that time) but I loved the models of the cartoon characters in season 3 more than the previews ones.

Inconsistency of episodes appeared on all seasons so that was more part of the writer than the cartoon so I did not expected season 3 to be perfect.

Today I continue to love Transformers G1 than all the other incarnations released after that.

I'm actually starting to re-watch with season 1 now, and I can easily maintain that season 1 has THE strongest story, mostly because it was serialized; each episode built off of the episode before it, while still allowing for some smaller character moments. Season 2, for me, is extremely uneven. There are some truly great eps., mixed with some terrible ones, especially in the second half that try to intro new characters but fail miserable (Hoist Goes to Hollywood? No thanks!). I think I just liked the idea of season 3 more so than the actual execution. Like a mentioned before...so much potential that shined through on the rare occasion, but just not enough.

aside from the "multi part" episodes, I find any serialization to be more accidental then by intent.

Season 3 was so futuristic that was awesome. I also like season 1 and 2 that was our era at the time 80s... Anyway I like all 3.

From season 2 I love the Gambler episode...
