Disney to acquire Lucasfilm

I guess George really is retired.

The big story here will be Episode 7 (and following, of course by 8 and 9). Personally, I don't really NEED there to be an episode 7--the story's been told, folks--but I guess it's nieve of me to think there won't be one. There's too much money to be made from Star Wars. I guess the damage to the franchise has been done (ie: the prequils) so whatever. Maybe it will be good.

I guess my biggest hope from this would be getting original Original Trilogy on blu Ray....

Yup, what was that of the end of times??? 0_o

Anyhow!! As long as they get great writers and directors, this could be the best thing to happen to the Star Wars universe!!!

I bet some talented writers and directors are just foaming at the mouth to get a chance to play with the Star Wars universe firsthand!!!!

Yeah, first the comic book movie replaces the action-adventure genre, and now we can have Star Wars replace the Sci-fi genre with no challenge!

One Star Wars a summer...no wait...multiple spin-offs! 4 Star Wars related movies a summer! More! how about a summer lead off with Boba Fett, followed by Dengar...Bossk...all heading to the mega summer blockbuster "Disney's Lucasfilm's The Bounty Hunters!" Hopefully that would lead to more awesome projects like "Momaw Nadon" and "Ice Cream Maker Guy!" Oh, and we could get some real, like, yknow, dark and gritty takes...more blood...'R' ratings...ooh, CGI would really look good with...and the lightsabre battles? you ain't seen nothin yet!....

This move says what about George Lucas:

a ) its always been about the money

b ) a retiree wants to see his creation in the best hands as he prepares to die

c ) the DIABEETUS is in control!

Sorry, man. This is one jaded Star Wars fan that just cant find the optimism.

See, I just don't know that there's a reason to be.

Had George delivered to us three amazing prequils that everyone love and promised us years and years of more of the same, then there would be reason to be disappointed. But the prequils didn't go over well and George said he was done. Heck , people even wished out loud that he WOULD sell SW off and now he did. If it's a matter of "Well I did want him to sell it, just not to Disney" well guess what....no one BUT Disney could afford to buy Star Wars!

I guess I'm fine with this because I've really been "done" with SW for a while. To me the thing that really matters are the three original movies. I have them (granted, on VHS) and can watch them whenever I want. George couldn't change that no matter how many times he wanted to tweak them. Disney won't be able to change it with whatever they do next. Heck, Disney could do bad remakes of all three or tell us in Episode 7 that the originals were all a dream, and it still wouldn't really matter. The toys associated with the OT have also all been done and I've basically called my SW collection complete even before this news broke (though I do still need a Sy Snootels). Maybe what Disney does will suck. If so, I'll ignore it like I ignore Medicalorions. If Disney does a good SW movie, wake me and I'll go see it. And in the end, George Lucas DOES deserve our thanks because--all said and done--he gave a lot of people their three favorite movies.

I've long suspected Lucas would make Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, but this isn't how I imagined it would happen; not in a million years did I ever think George Lucas would sell Lucasfilm, least of all to Disney, although in retrospect it makes perfect sense to me. Wow...this is really exciting news. Crazy, unexpected, wonderful news.

Well maybe finally we will get off the Clone Wars

I wonder if this will effect the so called Star Wars TV show and the Clone Wars toon

Well, rumors are heavy that this is Clone Wars' last season. If not, I'm betting it only gets one more at most.

The Star Wars TV show is probably still a decade or more away if it ever happens at all. Lucas and his cohorts at Lucasfilm seemed to be betting on the idea that CGI was going to become less expensive as its' usage became more commonplace, and that techniques would materialize that would allow it to be done more quickly with no appreciable drop in quality. This hasn't happened, which means that each episode as George envisioned it could cost $50-$100 million dollars (As George's idea seemed to be that he wanted no appreciable difference between the movies and the TV show in terms of production values). Not even Lucas OR Disney has pockets so deep to sustain that level of expenditure for long (which was why it hasn't happened yet despite being talked about as far back as 7 or 8 years ago. A single season could cost nearly a billion dollars.

Now personally? I think Disney could make it happen for far less if they really wanted to. Take a cue from some of the fanfilm creators out there and simply...do more with less. If the story and characters are good you don't need to drown the audience in CGI imagery. I'd even find it forgivable if the production occasionally used "stock footage" and recycled other assets from the movies.

i dont know if episode 7 is needed. i mean anakins story is told. if luke comes back then yes but otherwise i see no point in calling it episode 7. i would love it to have different subtitles if the real characters dont come back. comics and videogames do a great thing out of it. except for this i think this can be good if darth maul and boba fett get there own movies, lol. as for one movie a year?? i doubt that because its star wars and not saw we are talking about here. saw barely made that happen so i doubt we get as much from disney. they will think twice about it and best case scenario will be every 3 years.

I just can't take more. I mean The Avengers is Amazing. But there was to be no more Star Wars. With this. Probably 6 or beyond. Keep at it over and over. That live action series will probably come. The one thing that may be interesting is to see if they alter the toy line or add in a 6 inch scale. Just the thought of what could come is a bit unsettling. I just hope there is never a Star wars universe just happens to be one of the realms Thor finds kind of thing. I don't need the Sith Vs Iron Man and the rest of the team.

Disney and Lucasarts have a close relationship with one another so I am not surprised that Disney bought the company. I don't think anything bad will happened like a few posters believe it would. I think the company will function like the other companies that were bought by Disney - function independently; both Marvel and Pixar haven't really been affected by being bought out - the only effect I know at the top of my head was that Pixar made one more Toy Story film, which imo, ended up being the best out of the three.

the worst part of this mess? not the usage of "Marvel business" plan in conjunction with "Star Wars"...not "giving Star Wars to a new generation of filmmakers (keep that turd, Whedon out of this)...but the sad fact that Indiana Jones is just a small line in the fine print...interwebs = STAR WARS STAR WARS STAR WARS!

So sorry Indiana...The Well of Souls was nothing compared to being entombed in the Disney vault next to the corpse of Uncle Remus and that purple catfish host of "Muppets Tonight"

As much as I'm thrilled about the prospects of more movies I'm really worried that this is going to eviscerate post ROTJ EU. Also I hate that Dark Horse is certainly going to loose the license to Marvel. The only comics I buy are the omnibuses and was hoping to be able to own every comic through those someday but now that will never happen.

That's true. We used to be able to disregard anything that wasnt directly from George's mouth/brain or at least verbal recordance of approval as non canon . Remember all the countless novels and lore directly approved as a product by Lucasfilm before the prequels, and how all that canonicity went down the toilet when George decided to make new movies? You're right, the same can be expected for post ROTJ EU. So much for the props deserved to Tim Zahn for the Thrawn books and their help in making Star Wars cool again in the 90s.

Now, Im not saying that all canon = quality, but how much quality over quantity could we possibly get out of "opening the floodgates?"

Feat, I voided out your negatives...except for one that I already voided out earlier and it wouldn't let me do it again :)

That said. What would you prefer to have happened? To me, I only see a couple of scenerios had Lucas not sold:

1. He stayed retired and they kept on giving us Clone Wars cartoons, which really can only have a finite number of shows. That's just the way it is when your story takes place between event A and event B.

2. Lucas tried again to give us more movies. Movies that he has complete and total control over, in which he surrounds himself with "talent" too afraid of being fired to give him any constructive criticism on his work. And then we get a product much the same as the prequils.

I guess I'll be THAT GUY and go ahead and play the Avengers card since no one else has yet. That movie came out under the Disney banner and was an all around croud pleaser. They got creators and actors who were IN TO the material and they put good work into it, turned out good product. I don't see why that can't happen with SW.

I've read your posts of your dislike for Lucas' prequils and his way of going about things, I AGREE with a lot of your SW opinions. Now he's turned it over to someone else.

Like Han said, "What WOULD you like?"
