Sweetie, don't attempt to 'preach at me'.....

I've been a fan of this property since 1964, and I'm a woman..........in this 'land of boys', I AM the minority. If anyone wants to call themselves a 'fan', then they should do their damnedest to 'enlighten', NOT dim G.I. Joe's future.........

I was looking forward to two things concerning this year's Super Bowl, and the Cardinals and the Steelers weren't them; they were the G.I. Joe and Transformers 2 previews, respectively. (lol) Seriously, I was extremely interested in seeing the new G.I. Joe preview, and funny enough, at the beginning of the game I stepped into the restroom for just a split second, and my wife starts yelling that the G.I. Joe spot is on!! Crap!! I run out just as it goes off. I completely missed it. @grumpy@ But then we went next door to my in-laws, and my future brother-in-law, being the football nut he is, was TiVo-ing the game. So he ran it back just so I could see the Joe preview. It was awesome. I am so excited and I can't wait to see the movie.

But now allow me to validate my opinion, if you will. I've been a Joe fan since 1982. I had quite a few of the toys, read almost every single issue of the Marvel comic, and I watched the cartoon religiously after school every afternoon. So I had very deep-rooted feelings and ideas about what G.I. Joe was and meant to me, and what the subsequent film might be like. Now does this new movie fit my personal vision of what a G.I. Joe movie would be like? The answer is a resounding no.

Having said that however, I really like what I see, and it makes complete sense when I step back and consider a few things:

First of all, one might ask that if I am a "true fan", how can I be okay with all of the changes? Well, if you think about it, from the very beginning, at least from the beginning of RAH, which the movie is loosely based upon, G.I. Joe was always a covert counter-terrorist/combat unit assembled from America's elite who utilize the most up-to-date, cutting-edge weapons and technology to stop a mysterious, emerging terrorist organization bent on conquering the free world. That's exactly what the film seems to portray. See, that's the same view I had concerning Transformers; they radically changed the look and feel of the Autobots and Decepticons, but at the end of the day, the core characters and the conflict were the same. Optimus Prime and the Autobots were still heroic, wanting only to protect humanity from the evil of the Decepticons, and Megatron and his Decepticons cared only about power and domination, and they didn't care who got in the way. In both cases, the basic concept was retained. The heart of each property was preserved, it's just that the writers and developers decided to package and present it in a different way.

And really I have grown to love the black combat suits. At first, when I hard about it, I began questioning where they were going with the movie. To me they suit the black-ops/covert theme of the team, no pun intended. (lol) It's like the movie really capitalizes on the secretive, mysterious aspect of the team, and I really like that. It reminds me of one of my favorite snippets from the preview, where McCullen/Destro asks Hawk what he said the name of his team was, to which he replies, "I didn't." Aw yeah!! I just love that little cool, subtle hint at the top secret nature of the G.I. Joe team. Like officially they don't exist. I love it...

And as far as the "super-suits" go, I love the concept. At first though, I have to admit when I hard about it, I began questioning where they were going with the movie. But when I saw them in action in the preview, about a half-a-dozen Cobra Viper and/or M.A.R.S./I.G. type soldiers came to mind that would utilize such a thing, and all of a sudden it clicked with me. They also reminded me of the Battle Armor Cobra Commander, and that in turn made him infinitely more cool to me, moreso than he already was to me.

I loved the group shot of the team walking down that hangar, I loved the introduction of Snake-Eyes, my favorite Joe of all time, and I loved seeing Heavy Duty unloading a gazillion bullets from his buzz-gun.

I can't help it guys. Some of you can trash this movie all you want. Everyone has there opinion of course, but personally I'm terribly excited. It just looks like such a fun summer action flick like Transformers was, and I just think I'm really gonna enjoy it, drastic changes and all.

It's worth noting that it seems like many media outlets don't consider anything that airs before kickoff to be a true "Super Bowl Ad." G.I. Joe aired after the national anthem, and before the kickoff.

Also for another look at how "regular people" who have no real investment in the property are reacting to the trailer:

http://chud.com/articles/articles/17983/1/...-FUN/Page1.html

For reference: The folks at chud.com usually piss on just about everything that's "80's nostalgia related."

Their most prominent pessimist, Devin Faraci, saw some of those "filecard pics" and had this to say: http://chud.com/articles/articles/17969/1/...FILM/Page1.html (WARNING, LINK CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILER PICS)

And a room full of about a dozen 30-40 year olds, of which I was the only "current/continuing" Joe fan (but at least two others were fans "back in the day" and everyone remembers the franchise from their youth) all thought the trailer looked awesome.

You must be one of the OLD-TIMERS like Ken and myself...around here anyway? ;)

I heard alot of nay sayers about the film--how are the old joes over at the trenches forums feel about the new GIJOE movie? i heard them talk and wondering what it be like if there was an ADVENTURE TEAM GIJOE movie.

i think that be neat actually, and i'm 23 0w0 i collected 12inch GIJOES since 1999 hell i even saw a comerical once on TV showing the 12inchers. Rare if you ask me. i gotta tell ya though while the 64 and 80's joe fans might not like this film. you have to admit that GIJOE needs to exspand and evolve to survive.

from what i read about GIJOE he was a war toy. hippies and mommies didnt like him during the 70's of the vietnam war. so gijoe turn adventurer. after the plastic became to exspensive GIJOE was out of the game till 81 i think...with the a real american hero line.

then came sigma 6 both 12inch fans and 8inch fans of the line hated them. i wasnt sure myself but when i got duke he was pretty badass. i am sure i saw you in the joebattlelines forums.

i know alot of sigma 6 fans were sad when the line died. (didnt even get joe colton >< with life like hair!)

but i think that the film does have sigma 6 infulance cus the kids will remember sigma 6 and prob watch the movie cause of it.

hell when i saw those black suit it just scream sigma 6 and shipwreck toy--is soo sigma 6! i tell ya alot of sigma 6 fans will prob do customs cause of that.

thats why i accept the movie. and some minor changes in the film you have to be very open minded. i could be whining that --thats not gijoe--forunately i didnt watch much of the toon show.

anyways, you have to agree that GIJOE brand need to exspand, get out there, and continue the fun. i mean hasbro must realize that the old fans of the 64 and 80's toys are what? 40? 60? to 20? and 30? hasbro needs some new blood. as i said many times in forums. we have to admit we're getting too old and that GIJOE cant survive with out new generations.

i see this film more like the GIJOE of the obama age with the UN working together. it seems thats where GIJOE is aiming at. dont you think?

-lol sorry to make this a whole conversation-

Yep, and so many people forget or are unaware that the 12" GIJOE was more popular as the Adventure Team than it ever was in its early military era.

GIJOE has always evolved, has always sought to embrace new ideas--and as long as those new ideas are COOL ideas......GIJOE will remain viable in some form.

...............

So I guess just remember that while some hardcore fans preach that the movie will fail, keep in mind there's a whole other audience out there.

A-Freakin-MEN!!!!

Thanks for posting this. The 'core' fanbase is waaaaaaaaaaay lower than the 'mass' audience draw. The movie has to be able to reach out past those of us who frequent the boards.......and I'm thinking that this movie is going to accomplish that in spades #US1#

Also has a great example as to how the GI Joe trailer is being recieved by REGULAR people..........

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Distributor: Paramount

Release Date: August 7

The trailer that aired for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra looked like any other action flick. Absolutely nothing stood out. Paramount made a huge mistake by not playing off of the campy nature of the brand. As it stands, this trailer probably received a lot puzzled reactions. No buzz to be found here.

Which also illustrates how far outside of the public eye GIJOE really is. The assumption is the brand plays to its "strengths" when its campy, but that is not how aficionados of GIJOE see it.

This why I have said, for a long time, that GIJOE is a very difficult property to bring to the big screen.

The filmmakers are literally damned if they do or don't.

One more thought here: the folks polled above are probably not kids. There's a potentially huge audience sitting right there, in the under-14 set.

Now, I know my youngest step-son (13 yrs old) isn't a accurate yardstick to measure any of this by, all by his lonesome.........BUT.......

He was not aware of the trailer until I showed him, and once he saw it, his excitement level ramped up considerably--more so than Transformers, which he knew about.

He was telling me, in turn, about the reactions of his 14 friends to viewing the trailer and it was all positive. His exact words to me were: " Nobody thought GIJOE was this cool".

Now, that's just 15 kids talking, so who knows what impact the movie will really have.

Additionally, those 'true fans' dumping sh** all over whatever we've received thus far isn't helping matter either.

While a vast majority of *fans* like pissing in the pool, they should show some restraint..........there's other people swimming in it @smilepunch@

Let the bowing commence.

I just love arguments like this. Not to sh** in your cheerios, but fans no matter how core or not, do not want inferiour product. Also I am sorry but I am sick of people on their clouds steroetyping fan boys. Am I pond scum that needs to be swept under the carpet and shut up, because I don't know any better, and my opinion is trivial to the real picture? "Don't look at the fan boy and he won't see you" Now I am a monster in the closet due to my tastes. Thank You!

From my perspective, after seeing the ad I kinda want to see the movie. I have been holding out. I've wanted Gi Joe to make it to the big screen, but there were too many productive freedoms still taken. In a sense, they still made it G.I.J.O.E in product but are calling it Gi Joe to apease the masses. The preview looked ok, but I did cringe a bit. The all black costumed team idea is horrible, but that is what the studios are pushing and hoping will be their ace in the hole.

On a final note, the small core fan base, was big enough to make the 25th anniversary line a screaming success compared to most other toy lines, regardless of scalpers. If fans werent as picky about character and costume and just wanted to support gi joe for the name to keep it going regardless of the mythos then Sigma 6 and other sub brands would have done better than they did.

From what I have seen of the movie toys I am not impressed, and do not look forward to seeing all the ripcords warming the pegs when I go into seeing the figures, just like the Shia Lebouf figures from the Indy line.

so much to say here...

1) Fans who dislike the movie do not want the property to fail! (at least most of us) Contray to that we believe it would be more successful and last longer if treated different. I personally believe that some of this could have worked still looking a little campy but at it's heart Joe started and would be most successful as semi-realistic military vs. Sci-fi terrorists. I could even handle the sigma suits if done more realistically (camo less uniform, w/ HELMETS! and less powerful) Cobra's m.o. does not seem sci-fi but silly. Nanites controlling peoples thoughts and actions? It just seems too far.

But i really wanted to point out here is that those who dislike, want a great a joe movie to please themselves, and a lot of us want a good joe movie to do both please ourselves and reach out and please the non-fan. We disagree on how to do that.

2) I acknowledge no matter what was made this movie would be high unlikely to please everybody. Worse than transformers, joe has had multiple media, multiple lines, and multiple styles. The property itself is varied and it's impossible to capture all of the contradictory flavors within with a hitch. I will see the movie and hope regardless of what it is kids like it and toys sell, even if just to give Joe the chance to mature on a little more and head the right direction later.

3. "True fan" arguments are pointless and immature. I don't think they are meant that way initially but they always become so. Joe has had many different faces, some of us our fans of certain parts of joe while not others (Cobra-la isn't high on mine or many peoples list, while it is paramount on others) Let's try to keep the idea that we are all Joe fans in mind, just not of the same type, that doesn't make one side right and the others wrong. It is opinions.

This movie still looks like a bad sci-fi action flick, joe or not. If it wasn't Joe I would not see this movie or be interested in it in this lightest and to me that tells me something.

oh of course. i hope the movie is cool and based on what i heard....yeah...good storyline if you ask me maybe a lil rough on the edges...but the sequal would probily make it so much better. as the first films are awsome---sequals are even better!

Yeap i admit it's gotta change in some ways to survive like i said in my last post, it's about how, it's also about how much it changes at once. My complaint is less about future tech and more about how much, and how realistically it is being used. I think some of the Rah over sigma fans would have been more tolerant if some of that leaned their way.

It's also important that Rah got less military as it when it on too, the end being about ninjas (in this movie) and space more than anything else. Sigma also didn't last long. While 25th seems to have started clogging up in some places, initially it seemed impossible to find, this may have more to do with production level changes and economic times than popularity.

and BTW i would love a Joe Colton and or/ AT movies as prequels to this flick. They could have a little G.I.Joe logo over top of the main title.

I've had the privilege to chew over the idea (casually) of an Adventure Team movie with some serious filmmakers, and the conclusions we've gathered say it would never happen.....

That is, until some OTHER movie with a similar base-concept came out and people went gaga over it.

Even as a internet production, there's too niche an audience for the AT, its a little too.....obscure now to sell.........even as a major toy line push.

The AT would have to piggyback on the success of something else.

Personally, I think that's sad, because its a solid wholesome idea, grounded in a widespread appealing concept ( Adventure, troubleshooting, exploration, espionage) that could grab the imagination of a lot of folks, if given the chance.

I dunno though.......maybe there is someone out there around my age, with a lot of influence and a nostalgic love for those toys, who'd be willing to champion the long winding road such a project would take.

IT much like Joe would probably take some changing. I think there is an audience that would like it, but they would have to get past the name. It might also need to throw in a few characters like Recondo to get more rah fans intersted in.

I confess i'm not so sure of the story of the adventure team if there even was one. I just like the idea of Colton a solider, and some adventures gathering up and running into serious action.

The beauty, and the weakness, of the Adventure Team was that there was very little fiction written for it, outside of come mini comics, ads, and basic play scenarios. The characters are pretty much all ciphers, aside from those that talked, so we have little or no clues as to their personalities.

That means anything goes for them.........which is the crutch or curse depending on how you look at it.

If you send a AT member on a secret mission to Spy Island, does he slit the throats of the guards or does he just knock them out? Is the Sea Adventurer a cad, or a chummy fellow? Do these guys have names and what would they be??

Its like giving a personality to Barbie--ya pick one and go with it.

I could re-edit Superman IV into a snazzy trailer full of quickly snipped scenes and everyone would be drooling all over it.

My opinion remains unchanged by this trailer. It looks like direct-to-dvd garbage not even worthy of Netflixing. This looks like the sort of movie where you'd wait for the Sci-Fi channel to show it on a Sunday afternoon with commercial interruptions so that every fifteen minutes you can question whether or not you want to continue wasting your life.

I don't agree man, but that's damn funny. (lol)

y'know i was making a similiar argument earlier but there are some movies... that just can't be cliped like that. But that doesn't mean others can't be. The last 2 matrix films anyone?

Hey, the movie TRAILER "looks" awesome, that's no doubt, but so have the trailers for quite a few STINKERS out their in movieland. Does the movie LOOK to be pretty cool...well sure it does. Does it look like G.I.Joe? Not really, not to me, and I only speak for me. Looks like a good Sci-Fi military flick like DOOM or Starship Troopers meets Street Fighters and Transformers all mix into one.

I'm holding out for something different in honor of G.I.Joe though, but again..that's just me, old, stubborn, hard-to-please and irrevelant to the success of the franchise.

its suppose to be a surprise! from what i read about the chracter, he's still a devious sneaky snake as he always been. i heard the young actor will do a chris litta like voice and adding his own. either way its not the looks its how he acts...and judging from the spoilers....it is intressting....cobra commander and baroness have a spiecal conntaction though. might be outragous to some--but i like the idea.

Yes I have.

He is the Doctor. Essentially a mix of Dr. Mindbender & CC.

He doesn't wear a business suit that is all James McCullen.

His name is not Destro.

This movie is Sigma Six.
